- 🇬🇷14 AMAZING THINGS TO DO AND SEE ON KEFALONIA ISLAND IN 7 DAYS 🇬🇷
We flew to Kefalonia which is part of the Ionian Greek islands off the coast of mainland Greece on the 2nd of July 2018 for 1 week. We stayed in Hotel Mediterranee in Lassi and traveled around the Greek island by bus and loved every minute of it! We can drive however; we are both scared of heights and thought it best to stick to bus trips!! The roads on Kefalonia are fine, they are wide and not over crowded, it was just our preference for this trip. I love to plan ahead and research the best areas to stay, the distances between accommodation, bus stops and shops, restaurants etc, the area with the best beaches and then the best things to do and see on the island. I do this by following travel forums, using Google Earth, Google Maps, Google Street View and much more. Obviously, what I think is great might not appeal to everyone but I just wanted to create a video showing some of the things we loved doing and seeing when we went to Kefalonia. I hope this travel guide helps you plan your trip and if you need to know any further information, please ask away. We hope to go back again one day and stay longer so we can visit the south and more of the further west arm of the island. Thank you for watching. Claire x

We stayed on Kefalonia island the first week of July 2018, we feel it’s one of the most beautiful islands we’ve been on, breathtaking scenery and quite a chilled island too. In 1953 most of the island was devastated by a large earthquake however, much of the north escaped it. All prices mentioned are based on what we paid July last year, so they may differ but it’s just to give you an idea. Plus, please excuse and spelling mistakes I have dyslexia and I sometimes overlook mistakes. We based ourselves in Lassi as the beaches are amazing there plus it’s close and within walking distance to the capital, Argostoli. If you are planning a trip to Kefalonia or you are wondering what it’s like then, I hope you enjoy and find my video interesting. We were there for one week so as you can imagine, we couldn’t cover all the island in that time. We hope to return one day very soon. Please ask any questions if you’re like to know more information. Take care, Claire x
My review of using buses on the island:
Traveling around Kefalonia by Bus
This review is about how we managed to travel around Kefalonia in one week without a car and how good/bad the bus services are.
We were based in Lassi the first week of July this year and found it to be an excellent base for our needs.
We traveled all over the island on buses and beside one incident of a missed bus it worked out well.
Argostoli is the capital and all bus links start from there. There’s around 3 bus stops in Lassi and the buses run every half past the hour from 9.30am onwards. It’s costs 1.50 euros and takes around 10 minutes. Stay on the bus until you get to the main bus stop. All the buses are lined up with numbers and destinations on them and also there’s sheets of paper with times and destinations by the side of each bus. There’s a big screen telling you times and buses and also there’s a fab tourist information inside with lots of timetables to take.
I pre planned day trips before we arrived in Kefalonia by looking on the www.ktelkefaloniad.gr so I had times already worked out.
Fiskardo and Assos only have around 2-3 buses running daily so pre planning is crucial and they don’t always run every day- the timetables will show you. Always arrive at least 15 mins before catching the bus as we left a few mins early on a few occasions. The bus stop in Argostoli is fine though.
It’s a 2hr direct bus journey up to Fiskardo and I think there’s a 11am and a 3pm bus up and a 5pm return. It’s stunning seeing all the scenery, you go right up into the mountains but also you can see the coast aswell as other islands too, I loved travelling on bus for the scenery. There’s aircon, free wifi and they were never full when we went.
To Agia Efimia there’s a direct bus routine too and I think that took around 1hr.
Sami there’s a direct route also but if you wanted to go to Antisamos beach where Captain Corellis Mandolin was filmed, you would have to catch a mini bus from Sami.
Melissani caves- we took a bus to Sami then caught another bus to Melissani and told the bus driver we wanted to go to the caves. He dropped us off by a big road sign of the caves on your right ( around 10 min drive away from Sami) and we walked up a short hill which is clearly signposted. It’s beautiful there and we arrived just before the hoards of crowds arrived (before 12pm - we caught the earliest bus) We were due to catch a mini bus back to Sami at 12.40pm but it didn’t turn up!!! So we found a gorgeous restaurant/bar near the water and had a drink and ordered a taxi. As there were 5 of us, my husband walked. It took him around 20-30 walking back to Sami and it cost us 8 euros in a taxi. We loved Sami the prices were so good too. Then we caught the big coach back to Argostoli at around 3pm. Although, you will see on the timetables that some times are in blue this means there might be a delay as the bus waits for a ferry to come in... we had to wait, around 45 mins.
Assos you catch a bus from Argostoli which then stops at Divarata for a change over to a mini bus to take you down to Assos. I think there was only one bus there and one bus back. Assos was our favorite place, truly stunning. We took a towel and swimwear and went for a swim in a little bay the other side of the harbor, so so clear and calm, beautiful. The bus drops you off at the top of a hill which is around a 10 min walk but it’s a pretty walk down and up.
We wanted to go to Myrtos beach but the bus times meant that we would be there for many hours which we didn’t want to do as I’d read it’s not great for swimming for children. We wanted to spend around an hour there but as we didn’t have a car, we couldn’t. But, we got to see it from above on the bus journeys a few times which was nice.
Fiskardo is a must, it’s your traditional Greek fishing village with beautiful quirky alleyways and brightly colours houses, lots of yachts and ferries come in and crowds come off and head to the harbour side restaurants but if you carry on walking past them all you will find a much prettier spot with a fab restaurant called Panormos. It overlooks the sea and houses and not bad prices too.
We did a lot around Argostoli too, we all loved going over to Lixouri on the ferry which leaves at the first bus stop into Argostoli and leaves every hour I think. We also got to see lots of turtles in the harbour in the mornings.
The cost of buses were very good, short trips were 1.50 Euro and the most we paid was to travel to Fiskardo (a 2hr journey|) which cost 6.40 Euro.
We packed in a lot but if we had extra time, we would have loved to go to Ithaka, explore more around Lixouri area, and maybe go to Poros and Skala and Dogerati caves.
We will return one day
BAMA 1986 aw thank you so so much for you’re lovely comment, it means a lot thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed watching my video x

Brilliant vid n info. 💥🔥
I traveled a lot in my life and i can tell you that it’s the most beautiful place in the world. Beautiful, clean and safe. Simply amazing. Absolutely zero crime, you can be alone or with company and go anywhere you feel like it, day evening or night. Asos is my favorite spot, breathtaking. When you reach the island that’s when you’ll realize that deep down inside we are all “Greeks in exile”. Welcome home people ......
Angelo P aw I love this ❤️ totally agree!! X
Since 2006 when I got there for the first time, I can't stop saying "Every day spent not there is the day stolen from your life".
A must visit island, been twice and stayed in Lassi a short walk to agostoli. Those turtles so big, sit in taverna and watch them swim by and a lovely big amstel beer 🍻 cheers

I visited Kefalonia in 1993 long before captain corelli etc ,when it was still relatively quiet. We had a fantastic holiday and Fiskardo back then was just stunning. It all seems way built up now. Progress I suppose...
Love Fiskardo, hire a boat take a Greek salad and find your own little piece of heaven goes a couple of hours 🙏🏼

Fiskardo ticks every box for us, we visit in May, hire mountain bikes and cycle through the villages in the hills. There are wonderful pine woodland walks and small shale beaches. It’s incredibly picturesque. Cocktails in the evening at Theodora’s, lots of restaurants to choose from, a good supermarket, wonderful people.
Aw thats sounds so lovely!!! I bet it's a lovely time of year to visit, not too hot and less tourists around too. I loved Kefalonia and hope to go back again very soon x
Wow. What a great video. Thank you for showing all the different places and stunning scenery. I actually cried watching this as i know it will be even more beautiful in person. I absolutely love how you included bus info and prices, so helpful. I've not been to kefalonia but planning to go hopefully later this year. I can't wait now. Thank you.
Aw thank you so much for watching I’m glad you found it helpful 😊 I’ve been to many Greek islands and Kefalonia has to be in the top two for most beautiful - the greenery and sea shades are stunning! I have Kefalonia daily vlogs on here too to see more in depth of what we got up to but since last December, all my travel content I’m now posting over on diaryofatravelgeek UA-cam channel. If you go to Kefalonia have the most amazing time 😊

Ahhh enjoy your trip it’s one of the most beautiful islands I’ve ever visited! X
Was there a number of years ago for a two week break, it was one of the most lovely places I have been too including many Greek islands, the history the scenery the people were fab. Even had a little earth tremor to talk about when we came home. The only downside was when we took a coach trip up to Fiscardo, I was crapping myself sitting at the window seat on the bus looking down at a thousand foot drop to the sea. Made sure I was sitting at the other side of the bus on the way back. Bought The film Captain Corelli as soon as we came home.
Ah haha i know exactly what you mean about the sheer drops!!!! I was terrified at first but after a few days, i was ok. Its such a beautiful island, i cant wait to go back there one day x
Wait what I did the exact same rhing
I stayed in fiskardo last year and I was on the coach and it was so close to the edge I was holding on for dervlife
I live in kefalonia and it's 👌
My wife and I found Kefalonia 20+ years ago (the resorts, now have pavements and there's tarmac on the roads). We fell in love with this island and returned twice a year. Feeling guilty, we thought that we should try other countries. Waste of money, when you find your paradise why go anywhere else. Lassi is the resort for us, (10 minutes from the airport), it's on the opposite side of a peninsula to Argostoli (the capital). From Lassi, you can walk OVER the peninsula to Argostoli in 15+ minutes OR walk AROUND the peninsula (mostly along the sea) in 2 hours. I could go on forever........by the way, your only a ferry away from mainland Greece....how adventurous are you? We drove to Athens and the island of Skiathos.
Добрый день Кефалония! Я была в августе на острове. Красивый остров. Понравилось осталось давольна. Красивые пляжи.
I'm in cafelonia right now for holidays I went on two plains Ryanair and Ryanair
Woow so Nice 💖💖💖💖 love it's sooo beautifuls
zineb tma we are off to the island just next to this one innJuly, I hope it will be just as beautiful there too xx
Oh my goodness. What a BEAUTIFUL place! I can imagine it holds a lot of history too. Absolutely breathtaking! I love that you are able to get to most places via public transport (I don't currently drive). I visited Kos and the Greek half of Cyprus with my parents when I was much younger - loved it and still love Greek food and culture to this day. My hubby has never been abroad. This looks like it would be a perfect first destination, especially with the ease of travel to get from A to B. Thank you so much for sharing this - a really good insight. Take care and sending hugs xxxxx
Debs S aw you’re very welcome 😉 Kefalonia besides the beauty, Is a very chilled island, definitely a lovely place to visit for a first time abroad holiday. Flights from UK are reasonably priced too which is good. I got married in Cyprus -Greek part of the island and have been there 5-6 times, we love it!! Best place to go this time of year, not too hot for the kids 😁 My husband and I went to Santorini for my 40th birthday a few years ago and hired a car for the week. It was hard getting used to driving on the other side of the road but we did ok. But, I don’t think we would ever hire a car again on a Greek island haha the ones we’ve been on have scary roads! But yeah, buses are fab thankfully, just close your eyes when you go around corners!!! Haha xx
@@Diaryofabeautygeek hehee nothing has changed with the roads then?! lol That is amazing you got married in Cyprus. Hopefully not in the height of summer - I recall 91 degrees in the shade! Definitely appreciate the info, thanks so much again. Will certainly be keeping Kefalonia in mind :) I mentioned it to hubby and he seemed pretty keen
xxxx
Debs S no thank fully it was bearable haha e got married on the 24th June 😁 xx
Tons of History, especially on the main land.

Been to kefalona 8 times now and this is the best video yet iv seen of it take care and keep the plastic from the beaches
Roger Newman aw thank you so much I really appreciate you taking your time to say that. I absolutely fell in love with this island and wanted to give something back x
We’re going for our 4th time next month. It’ll be our 2nd visit to Skala. The one thing we do every year is captain Makis boat trip from Argostoli harbour. Sounds cheesy I know. Makis is a real character and it’s great fun on the boat with the “champagne” diving, clay body covering, beach volleyball and Greek barbecue. We’ve been all over Spain and various other med destinations and Kefalonia is top of the list. Kleftiko virtually every night and I come back about a stone heavier. A magical place though!!!!
Tom Joyce ah haha I’m the same with eating lovely Greek food and putting on a stone!!! Thank you for mentioning the boat trip, I hope to go back again very soon and see more of the island x

My grandpa is from Ayia/ Agia Efimia and he was born there in a village called Makryotika. Really nice video as it brings back memories. It’s sad cause we haven’t been there for like two years and don’t think that we’re going back soon 😔
Shmoozer aw it’s a beautiful harbour village, I’m glad my video brought back memories for you. X
Xi beach with red sand. Skala beach which is over 1km long and night base for turtles, also beautiful town. Mouda beach ( near Skala) long shallow water beach, perfect for children, beautiful smooth fine sand. Myrthos is must see from up close. All the restbu already mentioned. Great vid. Visit more islands. Lefkada and Corfu are also beautiful...

Ah you're very welcome : ) I am planning on doing a hotel tour too which needs to go up before i go to Corfu in July!!! The hotel is great, thinks 80's haha but the outside grounds and staff and private beach are 10/10 ....we loved it there and its a fab base too. Enjoy your trip xx
@@Diaryofabeautygeek Thank you. I was also wondering if it's cheaper to fly from Athens to Cephalonia or if getting a bus/train then boat would be better.
Meabh_m ooh I’m sorry I don’t know, we flew straight to Kefalonia from Wales, UK. I would take a look on Kefalonia forum on Tripadviser, I found that forum really great for planning my trip and maybe if you post your question there, you will get some answers xx
Do the coastal trail around Lassi when the weather is nice. Loads of beautiful beaches and some historic sites. There are two different WWII memorials along the way as well.
@@VampiraVonGhoulscout Thanks for the tip. Sounds great 👍
You have done this very well and great places you’ve recorded, maybe some of the old Greek music won’t need royalties.
Very informative video for the tourist and even seasoned Islanders like myself. Comprehensive look around the largest of the seven Ionian Islands. My ancestral home is Ithaca.
Thank you : ) I would love to go to Ithaca next time we go and spend a few days on there, its looks beautiful too. x
I would love to go to Ithika just so I could say that I have been to the home of odysseus
@@roywalker2649 The Ionian Islands are very beautiful. There is conjecture about the historical accuracy of Odysseus' home, but there are ancient ruins on Ithaca that are said to be from the era of Odysseus.
@@rainscratch It's a nice fantasy though.Even heroes should have a home😁😁😁👍
@@roywalker2649 Indeed. This hero's home was in the Ionian, but which Island is a matter of debate.
Ever been to Karpathos? It is my personal favorite Greek island. So wild and beautiful.
polifatts no I haven’t but it’s myself and my husbands dream to Greek island hop when our children are older x
i found this out some 24 years ago stayed in svoronata it was a good base to travel from we stayed at the Helena apartments with a great eating place just 15 minutes stroll from our room it looks like a very large open tent looking out over the IONIAN sea its called the FOIS try it when you go back. thanks for memories

Looking forward to my summer vacay in Sarti, Sithonia. Was wondering if 7:03 was near Sarti.💙
This video is lush. It reminded me a lot of the Algarve. Places like island of Tavira. Vila real de Santo António, Albufeira... you don’t need to swim with your sandals in there 😂. Thanks I’m going on holiday tomorrow and can’t wait 😊
Aw thank you : ) Yeah haha i hate walking into the sea if its stoney so as i didnt bring sea shoes, i just thought, stuff it and went in wearing the sandles i was already wearing haha Ooh i havent been to those places, i will take a look online. I hope you had a wonderful holiday x

Lovely video! I didn't know that there is place called Lassi, Lassi is boy name here in Finland 🙂 it's not popular name anymore, but it was quite popular when I was kid 😄 nowdays international names and "old school" names and nature based names are popular here ☺️
Päivi /hengitysharjoituksia ah really 😀 it’s funny how names change, I’m hearing more older names coming back here like Arthur and Burt. Thank you 😊 xx

Thank you very much for this beautiful video. We're off to Kefalonia in a couple of weeks so this video has been essential and have taken notes. We haven't got a car and we are staying in Svronata so will use the buses or taxi as there are 4 of us. Are the bus prices one way ? Looking forward very much, thanks again.
1sciaca aw I’m so so sorry for not replying sooner - you’re probably already been by now!! But if not, buses are one way tickets. I hope you loved or will love Kefalonia like we did xx
Zakintos ❤
Thank you. I have 2 weeks stay this coming June.
You have inspired me, and give me hope.
It may be too early in the year (early March) when I write this.
Could you supply the link to the bus companies.
Thanks again. :)
