Love when a series does a title drop in it - "Spice and Wolf, is it?" 🔥
Wonder if that will ever come up again some time now that the name has been dropped in universe?
I think part of the meaning of the story of the devil is that the guy trying to find someone for the devil to eat was heaping himself in sin doing it and flavoring himself for a devil by doing it.
Yeah, the spice in the story with the demon was greed. That's why it was a cautionary tale that the church would tell.
Spice refers to the pepper Lawrence is storing in his wagon.

Our boy Lawrence is the happiest guy ever to get handed the bill after his girl goes on a shopping spree. But she only bought the things he promised her. If Holo killed Yarei she would prove him right. By the way, she's fully conscious in her wolf form, she can even speak while in that form, so she knows exactly what she's doing, and Holo will only kill if she must, not for vengeance. Oh and don't worry, now that the journey North is really underway for real, you better believe they are going to run into every single one of those potential threats you mentioned at some point along the way. Bandits, wolves, the Church... all that. This episode was the end of book one. From the title it looks like next week we are taking zero breaks and going straight into book 2. So everyone in the opening and closing credits we haven't met yet, we about to meet all of those folks. Including and most importantly that pretty young shepherdess. Also, the plot is easier to follow in the next arc. The economics part gets laid out pretty quick. This first story had you on the edge of your seats trying to figure out what's up. The next story will have you on the edge of your seat precisely because you know what's up. So it will be a whole different kind of wild. Things about to get real exciting. No stand alone slice of life palette cleanser episode like we got in the OG anime after episode 6 this time.
Trying to think of a way to say this without coming off as a weird comment backseater of sorts... personally I try to avoid talking about future things happening in a show to avoid spoiling people of the future plot and characters. I get the excitement though, it's a nice show.
Also, as FreshestAnime displayed in this video for this episode, '08 Wolf Holo was far more menacing and sharp looking. '24 Wolf Holo looks much more like a handsome dog to me. Not bad, just far less intimidating.
From a wolf to a Shiba.
Finally! This is the episode I've been waiting for y'all to see. In the manga she ATE someone and spit them back out unharmed, just to flex. You should check ep6 of the 2008 anime to see how hard she bodied everyone into the walls, ceilings, floor. Lawrence is underrated as an MC too, standing in front of a mob while bleeding out is different in Bleach but here he was at death's door for real. Lawrence got hit near the brachial artery, that's still a deadly risk. Holo got her moment of him being a brave knight.
Fun piece of trivia, the merchant Holo was paying at the end was the same guy who got scammed about the fur pelts. That's not in the book or the original anime, I like the small detail that he's still doing business with her after being impressed at her trick
He had to show her he was a real man and willing to show his fangs and fight. Holo knew she could handle things. But she still wanted to know the man she chose was willing to try even against overwhelming odds.
Yep. Thats why despite the odds, the mere gesture and lengths Lawrence chose to go in this moment really cememnted it as one of my favorite moments in the entire series. Also I REALLY WISHED they animated that part of her eating then spitting the guy out because that would've been very funny for the viewers but oh well LN only's keep winning 🤷.
Holo is a beast - LITERALLY ??? Lol!
It was told to us in the first episode. She either needs blood or wheat to transform into her wolf form. In episode 1 Lawrance told her to rather take the wheat to transform.

This episode was my favorite by far. Maybe I'm a little bit baised since this is one of my favorite moments in the entire series. Like for instance, having Laerence be the first person in her life to stand up for her and protect her and not the other way around when against impossible odds.
I love that they have faithfully shown Lawrence competence as well. He may not be a professional warrior, but he is quite a big, athletic man who does know how to handle himself if he has to and is constantly traveling in rough times. IIRC, he is 1.80 which is well above average with this show historic faithfullness (while still being fantasy).
I'm kinda sad that they went for actual wolf with Holo true form instead of Mane Wolf that the previous adaptation was going for. Mane Wolves are the most foxy wolves there are and certain type of apple plays very big role in their diet. Still, this may be more accurate to novels.
Oh they also didn't went for as much of a horror aspect as previous adaptation. That one really have shown the reality of suddenly facing a wolf that's the size of two elephants in tight confines. Plus, just how stealthy she was even despite her massive size (which might have been foreshadowing of future novels). Too bad
While I'm not disappointed in the remake, I'm pretty split. Remake nails conversation, details of their mimic and scenery, but old adaptation had much better horror, drama, animation, and action aspects.
Edit: Oh I finally watched the rest of your reaction. Job be rough. So, there is a nice story behind the title. The author got inspired to write this story after reading spice/bookkeeping codex from rennaisance. Interestingly in those times talented and affluent merchants were commonly called, well, Spices since that's where the real money was. Wolf is obviously Holo, but another intersting thing is that she is just a straight up Inari Kitsune with a western spin. Kitsune is well known to anime community while Inari is Buddhist/Shinto God (variable gender) of agriculture, fertility, industry, prosperity, rice (wheat, eh?), and foxes. That is why while Holo is technically a wolf, her colors, the way she acts and temperament is quite fox-like. Also funnily, white foxes were believed to be Inari messengers so that may be another reference if you look at Lawrence hair.
In other words, yeah, Spice and Wolf is just crafty, clever way of naming the series Lawrence and Holo which is quite refreshing when you look at how many recent-ish titles are just authors taking the easy way and slapping entire paragraphs together

The thing about the invoice at the end is that Lawrence told Holo that she couldn't leave him until she paid for the clothes she just destroyed, so she went and put herself even further in debt to him. Now she can't leave for even longer. It's a very tsundere way to say she wants to stay with him.

I love the new series but i can't take Wolf-form Holo seriously here.

Regarding why Lawrence didn't pick up the weapons, I think it's easy to forget that the tunnel is dark AF with no light. He'd probably be fumbling around for a minute trying to find the damn things when he has a dagger on his person already.

Because the church would start a holy crusade on Holos people if she turns out to be that dangerous. If she had left a bloodbath there, she would have proved her danger level and a holy crusade as justified and you don't want to mess with a holy crusade of the church...

Truth is she was more menacing in the OG. Now they made her look like a Shiba Inu, but I don't mind it very much

Based on ya'll's commentary, I am supposing that none of ya'll watch the 2008 S&W, right? This episode REALLY draws out one the changes for me, in a real unfortunate way. Originally, the betrayal was by Chloe, a girl from the village. Her character gave off an apprentice merchant, flirty sort of relationship(being super general about that). Seeing her betrayal and hostility had WAY more emotion and pain from it. '08 made you really give a damn about the loss of such a promising possiblefuture connection and friend. 2024 S&W Yarei just felt like an inconvenience for me. With how nonchalant and ambivalent he acted in episode 1, I just did not ever feel a connection to him, other than a bit of disgust at his animosity towards Holo.
I am really enjoying S&W '24, but the original felt sharper, darker, with more "filler time" that actually made the viewer more empathetic towards what was happening on screen.
Plus, I am still holding a 10/10 for original Holo design, despite '24 Holo being absolutely adorable. Sorry for the rant. I found out that I am unusually passionate about this fantastic series.
I have mixed feelings. Chloe being a jealous jilted lover makes more sense on a personal level but Yarei having ZERO reason to beef with Lawrence and turning to "you can kill the man, take the woman alive" feels more horrific when you realize he's willing to kill his friend over business. He could've told them to capture them both, the church would burn Lawrence anyway, but he was cold as ice here
Chloe was anime-only, Yarei is from the Light Novel. Both characters are shown to be close to Lawrence in their respective adaptations.
Anyway, both anime adaptations are amazing!
I have to agree that episode 6 of the 2008 S&W was MUCH better. You could also see the absolute terror in the dogs faces at holo's howl, the true terror in yarei/chloe being confronted with the true form of holo. Also I think Lawrence did indeed use the knife in the original, but the fight did go slightly different. Episode 6 is absolutely worth a watch to see the differences. I think it did the Lawrence X Holo at the end much better as well, and Lawrence's panic at Holo leaving as well as Holo's sadness.
There are many things the remake does really well, and animation will always be overall better, but it does not do as a detailed a job showing the emotion of the characters.

Not saying you're wrong. But to me Chloe was to thirsty. She tried to get Lawrence to roll around in the hay with her in episode 1 and got rejected. So it didn't feel shocking when she betrayed them cause jilted lover is a trope as old as time. Yarei was Lawrence's friend. One of the few people on Earth he was close to. They had no bad blood. So his betrayal to me cut deeper. From my personal perspective I'd be more hurt if a close friend betrayed me then a woman that I turned down. I can understand a person getting rejected being mad and wanting to stick to the person that rejected them. I think it's as sad as a family member turning on you when a close friend turns on you. Maybe it's bros before 304's to me but I'd always have my friends backs.

I am not able to react to every show is really the answer. Its a long list of great content. More shows come our a season than we can even cover and the list goes longer
Up until this point I would've said the remake is almost always strictly better than the original, but I must say the Wolf-form is a bit too cutsy/goofy looking. The eyes particularly. The original was genuinely menacing. That's a shame.
Holo's old wolf form was based on a fox, though. Her snout was the wrong shape for a wolf. Ironically, that's also why the old form looked more menacing.
Also, if you've been around real wolves you'll find out that once they get to know you their eyes start looking dopey like a dog's too. I was really surprised by this when I spent some time (about a week) with the NY Wolf Conservation Center's "Ambassador" wolves. The Center's people explained to me that most wild wolf photographs show them with menacing eyes because in the wild wolves are always wary of humans carrying tubular things with glass circles. If they're comfortable with the camera and the people, they'll actually start posing like dogs.
That said, the current Holo's eyes are too big for her wolf face.
@@andrewsuryali8540 That's interesting and all, but I fundamentally am not concerned with biological accuracy, I simply wanted it to be imposing like it was. Without that, it kinda loses all the "fear" backing it. This went from being the moment I was most excited for, to probably the biggest disappointment of the Remake, unless they somehow mess up the scene i'm thinking of from Season 2. I won't be more specific for spoilerino reasons.
