    Even though I'm not Eastern Orthodox, this news makes me really sad :( Satan is really stepping up his game lately. Maybe he is getting desperate because he senses his time is running out? Unity, and the healing of schisms (Catholic & Orthodox) is in my daily prayers, and I will pray that this new schism amongst the Eastern Orthodox will be short lived.

      As a Catholic, I pray for unity as well. On a lighter note, I think our Heavenly Mother could help end these schisms the only way a mother knows how: by forcing them to say nice things about each other or no one's going to Disney World next week. So, as a Catholic, I am humbly asking Patriarch Bartholomew and Patriarch Kiril to please end the schism. I really like Disney World.

    Absolutely! We have no Pope! We the people have always been the Church, the Church is our Ark. As much as I love and honor Hierarchs (I quite like my Bishop Isaiah, the Metropolitan of Denver) he still is a human being striving for transformation like all of us.
    We should never stop our prayers for “all the Clergy and the People” (not only once a week as this phrase is chanted in Liturgy by the Deacon).

    I’m discerning rn between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches and the respective scandals in both aren’t helping :/ I sometimes do worry that I’m gonna join and dedicate my life to a church, only to die and find out it was the wrong one, but I try to remember that “no one goes to hell over a technicality” and if I sincerely seek God and serve him, that’s all I can do

    • @BibleIllustrated
      @BibleIllustrated  6 років тому +5

      Now, I am biased towards Orthodoxy, and I suggest you seek there, buuuuut, even if you make "a mistake" I can't really imagine God holding it up against you. Choosing between Orthodoxy and Catholicism is a step in the right direction; the only difference being just how much a 'right' direction it is and how big of a step, but it's still a good move to make :-)

    • @giuseppelogiurato5718
      @giuseppelogiurato5718 5 років тому

      At least you have a choice... I am not in such a luxurious position to go shopping for religions like I would a piece of fruit... Neither church will have me, so be happy you have the opportunity to choose Orthodoxy when some people like me don't. (You are probably educated, wealthy, heterosexual, married, etc.)

    • @BibleIllustrated
      @BibleIllustrated  5 років тому +1

      Why no Church would have you?

    • @landonweist
      @landonweist 4 роки тому

      Remember, in relation to said scandals, that the holiness of the members isn't what matters for the Church's identity as holy, it's the holiness of Christ as head of the Church. Both also have a great number of saints to look to and pray to for intercession, so that's a plus. And don't worry about going to hell by picking the wrong church, that technicality thing most applies here. (The Catholic Church recognizes at least 1 saint that was never in communion, if that helps) Simply seek to live a prayerful life of love, hope, and charity rooted in God. The differences between the two are so small anyway, especially in relation to other churches, and the Body and Blood of Christ and the reconciling power and forgiveness of Confession is the same in both. You're picking between the two best choices, so 👍 either way.

    3 years later and it's only gotten worse. It must feel good living in a majority Orthodox country like Serbia, since every church in the country is under the same jurisdiction. But in America, a lot of Orthodox Christians can't take Communion in each other's churches, even if they're only a few miles apart.

      As sad as I am about the situation, I am almost entirely sure they can. This schism is a political and (let's hope) temporary split which has nothing to do with dogma. No side is seeing the other, or their flock, as heretical or unworthy of salvation. As far as I understand, the general principle since late antiquity has always been: if there's a canonical church near you and you're baptised, you're good to go, wether that church is Greek, Romanian, Ecumenical, Polish, Estonian, Russian or Cypriot.

      Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev is not currently in Communion with any of those Bishops.
      Unless you're talking about the Schismatics set up by the United States. Well they're not considered Canonical by even the Churches in Communion with both Constantinople and Moscow and refuse to concelebrate with them.
      And Canonically Speaking the EP set up a parallel Jurisdiction in Ukraine. So they are the Schismatics according to Canon Law.

    The Early Church Fathers on
    Salvation Outside the Church

    The Early Church Fathers were not shy when it came to condemning heretics and schismatics. They taught that those who put themselves outside of the Catholic Church had no hope of salvation. Some take that to mean anyone outside of the Church is lost. But that is not so. Their condemnations were aimed specifically at heretics and schismatics. Heretics and schismatics are individuals who at one point had the faith and later rejected it. Those who through no fault of their own do not know what Christ requires of them are not guilty and therefore not automatically condemned. God punishes rebellion not ignorance. He is not legalistic. As the apostle Paul noted in 1 Corinthians 4:5, men will be judged by the purposes of their hearts.
    Clement of Rome

    Let us go through all generations and learn that in generation after generation the Master has given a place of repentance for those willing to turn to him. Those who repented for their sins, appeased God in praying, and received salvation, even though they were aliens to God (Letter to the Corinthians, no. 7 [AD 95]).
    Ignatius of Antioch
    Be not deceived, my brethren: If anyone follows a maker of schism [i.e., is a schismatic], he does not inherit the kingdom of God; if anyone walks in strange doctrine [i.e., is a heretic], he has no part in the Passion [of Christ]. Take care, then, to use one Eucharist, so that whatever you do, you do according to God: For there is one flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ, and one cup in the union of his blood; one altar, as there is one bishop, with the presbytery and my fellow servants, the deacons (Letter to the Philadelphians 3:3-4:1 [A.D. 110]).
    Justin Martyr
    We have been taught that Christ is the first-begotten of God, and we have declared him to be the Logos of which all mankind partakes [John 1:9]. Those, therefore, who lived according to reason [Greek, logos} were really Christians, even though they were thought to be atheists, such as, among the Greeks, Socrates, Heraclitus, and others like them. . . . Those who lived before Christ but did not live according to reason [logos] were wicked men, and enemies of Christ, and murderers of those who did live according to reason [logos], whereas those who lived then or who live now according to reason [logos] are Christians. Such as these can be confident and unafraid (First Apology 46 [A.D. 151]).
    Irenaeus
    In the Church God has placed apostles, prophets, teachers, and every other working of the Spirit, of whom none of those are sharers who do not conform to the Church, but who defraud themselves of life by an evil mind and even worse way of acting. Where the Church is, there is the Spirit of God; where the Spirit of God is, there is the Church and all grace (Against Heresies 3:24:1 [A.D. 189]).
    [The spiritual man] shall also judge those who give rise to schisms, who are destitute of the love of God, and who look to their own special advantage rather than to the unity of the Church; and who for trifling reasons, or any kind of reason which occurs to them, cut in pieces and divide the great and glorious body of Christ, and so far as in them lies, destroy it - men who prate of peace while they give rise to war, and do in truth strain out a gnat, but swallow a camel. For they can bring about no "reformation" of enough importance to compensate for the evil arising from their schism. . . . True knowledge is that which consists in the doctrine of the apostles, and the ancient constitution of the Church throughout all the world, and the distinctive manifestation of the body of Christ according to the successions of the bishops, by which they have handed down that Church which exists in every place [i.e., the Catholic Church] (ibid., 4:33:7-8).
    Origen
    There was never a time when God did not want men to be just; he was always concerned about that. Indeed, he always provided beings endowed with reason with occasions for practicing virtue and doing what is right. In every generation the Wisdom of God descended into those souls which he found holy and made them to be prophets and friends of God (Against Celsus 4:7 [A.D. 248]).
    If someone from this people wants to be saved, let him come into this house so that he may be able to attain his salvation. . . . Let no one, then, be persuaded otherwise, nor let anyone deceive himself: Outside of this house, that is, outside of the Church, no one is saved; for, if anyone should go out of it, he is guilty of his own death (Homilies on Joshua 3:5 [A.D. 250]).
    Cyprian of Carthage
    Whoever is separated from the Church and is joined to an adulteress [a schismatic church] is separated from the promises of the Church, nor will he that forsakes the Church of Christ attain to the rewards of Christ. He is an alien, a worldling, and an enemy. He cannot have God for his Father who has not the Church for his mother (The Unity of the Catholic Church 6, 1st ed. [A.D. 251]).
    Let them not think that the way of life or salvation exists for them, if they have refused to obey the bishops and priests, since the Lord says in the book of Deuteronomy: "And any man who has the insolence to refuse to listen to the priest or judge, whoever he may be in those days, that man shall die" [Deut. 17:12-13]. And then, indeed, they were killed with the sword . . . but now the proud and insolent are killed with the sword of the Spirit, when they are cast out from the Church. For they cannot live outside, since there is only one house of God, and there can be no salvation for anyone except in the Church (Letters 61[4]:4 [A.D. 253]).
    The baptism of public witness [desire] and of blood cannot profit a heretic [one who holds the faith and then abandons it] unto salvation, because there is no salvation outside the Church (Letters 72 [73]:21 [A.D. 253]).
    Lactanius
    It is, therefore, the Catholic Church alone that retains true worship. This is the fountain of truth; this, the domicile of faith; this, the temple of God. Whoever does not enter there or whoever does not go out from there, he is a stranger to the hope of life and salvation. . . Because, however, all the various groups of heretics are confident that they are the Christians and think that theirs is the Catholic Church, let it be known that this is the true Church, in which there is confession and penance and which takes a health-promoting care of the sins and wounds to which the weak flesh is subject (Divine Institutes 4:30:11-13 [A.D. 307]).
    Jerome
    Heretics bring sentence upon themselves since they by their own choice withdraw from the Church, a withdrawal which, since they are aware of it, constitutes damnation. Between heresy and schism there is this difference: that heresy involves perverse doctrine, while schism separates one from the Church on account of disagreement with the bishop. Nevertheless, there is no schism which does not trump up a heresy to justify its departure from the Church (Commentary on Titus 3:10-11 [A.D. 386]).
    Augustine
    We believe also in the holy Church, that is, the Catholic Church. For heretics violate the faith itself by a false opinion about God; schismatics, however, withdraw from fraternal love by hostile separations, although they believe the same things we do. Consequently; neither heretics nor schismatics belong to the Catholic Church, not heretics, because the Church loves God, and not schismatics, because the Church loves neighbor (Faith and the Creed 10:21 [A.D. 393]).
    When we speak of within and without in relation to the Church, it is the position of the heart that we must consider, not that of the body. . . All who are within [the Church] in heart are saved in the unity of the ark (On Baptism, Against the Donatists 5:28[39] [A.D. 400]).

    While I agree with the general sentiment of “nobody goes to hell over a technicality,” it is important to consider that one of the sides has been known to promote inter-religious ecumenism. And in gaining their independence, said breakaway group would probably, in time change Orthodox dogma.
    So given the seriousness of this possibility, it could be a matter of salvation in the long term.

    I counted at least 4 different "Roman Catholic" religions, and none of them follow the teachings of the Vicars of Christ; it's all Saints over Christ and the apostles and "personal revelations" that contradict the Catholic faith as it comes from the valid Popes. I thought maybe the Church of Christ exists in the Orthodox, but now I'm finding even the Orthodox are almost as badly divided.
    I mean, there's (1) Novus Ordo, (2) Traditional (goes back to 1964, Bergoglio is Pope), (3) The SSPX with is all over the place because Archbishop Lefebvre changed his mind (4)"Traditional Sedes (goes back to before 1958, at least the Tridentine Mass is said over the "Traditional Latin Mass" but they pollute the faith with "personal revelations" that counter the gospel and the teachings of the Vicars of Christ. To be honest, the faith was derailed even in 1958. The Novus Ordo was a long time in the making and didn't just suddenly happen in 1964 with Vatican II! There was a "Liberation Theology" corruption of the faith going back to Karl Marx... )
    NO ONE can change the Laws of Moses. Christ the Lord God did NOT change it, the saints can't change it, not even Mary Mother of the Lord can change it.

      @Krishy Fan Yo, don't call the Orthodox schismatics or be happy about the Greek-Russian schism! Firstly, I'm pretty sure they're not seen by the Catholic Church as schismatics based on the Code of Canon Law! (But yes they're also not in full communion with Rome, it's complicated) Secondly, even calling those even in schism schismatics does more harm than good with the mission for unity between the Churches. Just look at Bojan's response, your comment has just given a bad impression of the CC! Look to St. JP2 who never called the Orthodox heretics or schismatics, but instead worked for peace, love, and unity. Also, we should never like schism, even in churches not in communion with Rome! Well, unless I guess if that schism is due to a part of a church coming to truth from heresy, which is not happening here! We should always pray for others to recieve the Spirit of Unity, the Holy Spirit. If nothing else, this schism seriously hurts/pauses ecumenical efforts and dialogue between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. And finally, Jesus is definitely in all who receive the Body and Blood of Christ, which the Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Russian Orthodox all do! Grace and peace in Christ!

      848 "Although in ways known to himself God can lead those who, through no fault of their own, are ignorant of the Gospel, to that faith without which it is impossible to please him, the Church still has the obligation and also the sacred right to evangelize all men."3

    I like that quote that no one goes to hell over a technicality. But, even that aside, it is still important to try and figure out the truth. If you are in America attending a Greek Orthodox Church, and there is a Russian Orthodox Church nearby, there is still an important decision to pray and research about. I had the same thought process when was trying to find the true Church before I became Orthodox. I was pretty distressed about finding the truth for my salvation, and I concluded with hoping in God's mercy for that, and trying to find the truth because it is the right thing to do. And that if I was trying to do the right thing by looking for the truth, then I could indeed hope for God's mercy regarding the relationship of this to my salvation.
    I agree that the forces of hell seem to be making a lot of big hits recently.

      The schism does not mean that there are two Churches now - these two particular Churches are still in communion with other particular Churches, so, for now, it really doesn't matter whether you're attending a Greek or Russian Orthodox church. I don't think God abandons any honest seeker, even if (s)he fails to find the most 'correct' Church.

      The ecumenical patriarch looks Popey acting outside his jurisdiction and Russia has issues with Ukraine which look political. It's messy and I'm in no position to judge who is more right or more wrong. I pray for them both.

      To make a really long story short, the Ecumencal Patriarch gave the thomos of autocephaly (independence and approval) to a schismatic church in Ukraine that broke off from Moscow Patriarchate; this made the Moscow Patriarchate cut ties with the Ecumenical Patriarchate on the grounds that it is meddling with its interior problems.

    This is reason why you need a supreme pontiff. He could decide one way or another. and then there would be no need for a schism.

    • @BibleIllustrated

      Having a supreme pontiff approve of idolatry is a better argument against having a supreme pontiff.

      How about the one who is retired? He had nothing to do with that pachamama stuff. He is neutral. He isn't doing anything but praying. What is needed is an independent and fair arbiter that everybody would listen to. I bet if Russia thought it would be for the good of the Church and somehow serve their interest they could convince their patriarch

      @Bible Illustrated Well, if he thought that the statue was a statue of Mary, which the person told him so, then there would be no sin, though perhaps imprudence. I mean, the statue was intended by the sculptor to be a statue of "Our Lady of the Amazon", though I think he was rather imprudent in how he made it. It couldn't be idolatry in the first place, cause Catholics don't worship Mary. ;-)

    The whole Church which is the Body of Christ build on the foundation of the Apostles naming Peter as the chief Archpatriarch or Bishop of the Church. Schism occurred in 1054 because of cultural and political pride and arrogance among the eastern fathers of the Church. When the Christians of the East split from the West and another split occurred within the Eastern churches thus forming the Orthodox church, many of the eastern Christians reunited with the West forming the Roman Catholic Church. The Church cannot be Christian if Jesus is not the corner stone of the Church which is His bride and He the bridegroom. Right now His Holiness Pope Francis is the successor of Simon Peter and Chief Apostle to all the Apostles n
