Listening Dr. Travis, his softness, his pace, his clarity, his extraordinary simplicity to explain the brain functioning made me feel so "scientifically intelligent", with this lecture I am sure I made more brain connections that I could imagine. Thank you.
Please, make available all these lectures on Hacking Consciousness at Stanford University. It will be a must to have them, for any university that might think is in the forefront of knowledge and education.

With every thought, feeling and emotion we switch from parallel reality to parallel reality constantly. The world around us does not change, we just shift to a different one based on our current perspective. Circumstances do not matter, only our state of being matters. Two people could be looking at the exact same thing, but if one of them is distressed by what they see and the other is completely emotionally unaffected and accepts it for what it is, one person will be in one reality where that circumstance affected them in a negative way, while the other will shift to another reality where the circumstance has no bearing on them. Unbelievable how the illusion of fear can trap so many people. Once we recognize we have the power to switch from fear to love, we will then be free.

    • @MrEmotional33
      @MrEmotional33 9 років тому +3

Diane Marie Unfortunately fear is much much more than just an illusion, because fear is mostly based on previous experiences, which indeed were based on events and social interactions, which caused specific emotional states and consequently also changed the neurophysiological structures and hence the reality of the person, otherwise there wouldn´t be such mental disorders like neuroses or phobias..which are also much more than just illusions...but subjective reality for the affected individual..so personal freedom or autonomy is in fact mostly an illusion and nothing more..

What? Not required? Do you understand what the double slit experiment is..?
Clearly you aren't up on the last 50 yrs of physics ;) I can't even..sigh.See this is the problem w Sean Carrolls multiverse nonsense, it's considered nonsense by the vast majority of the physics/philosophy/philosophy of physics folks aside from a few who get on tv regularly by spewing incomprehensible nonsense a la Carroll and tegmark. And the notion you raise of "infinity" also doesn't make sense to anyone who reads as we know infinity is a mathematical abstraction and does not exist, when a theory goes "infinity" you walk away and reshape your understanding of things or you sound like an idiot. Reality is* NonLocal, now that is far stranger once you understand what that means than any bs multiverse theory.

    • @probablechoices
      @probablechoices 9 років тому +1

Kravmagog: the universe is fine tuned for life because you are the universe...non locality, the holographic principle, the quantized nature of space time and what lays underneath and all around us..Consciousness...the universe functions much more akin to an online multi player rpg, ie we live inside a simulation.
Reality is stranger than you think. So I encourage you to leave the multi verse theory and look into other theories. Or if you don't want to you don't have to :)

MrEmotional33 but interesting if there is a way of programming intentional experiences to rewire the brain for well-being as opposed to neuroses - negative thinking can get you in a rut where you see the negative potential in neutral events,no?what if we were able to do the opposite to treat mental health issues?>

The speaker claims that the "pruning" of the brain equals wisdom or development of intelligence. I would suggest it equals conformity or turning us all into sheeple. Perhaps we "adults" can learn a thing or two from those "rash" teenagers by thinking a little bit more outside the box ourselves and being a bit more impetuous or, ohmigod, taking chances. Maybe one other thing we adults could do to help those teens be less "rash" is recognize that they may have a lot more potential than we give them credit for and stop infantilizing them. Then maybe rather than acting out dysfunctionally, they'd actually contribute more to society. That, after all, was what they did for the multiple millennia before we had brain scans which we could then interpret to satisfy modern memes. The discussion of meditation, though, was very informative.

Nobody crawls into your head and starts pruning synapses. The brain, your brain, does it depending on which synaptic connections you are or aren't using. It isn't the government doing it, it's your brain. A lack of sufficient pruning actually slows down your brain. Think of it as having a bunch of useless programs running in the background on your computer.

How did "I" create my reality? I ask you because my current brain is the product, not of "me" entirely, but also from a group of people overseeing a USMC military base (Cherry Point) who allowed the water system to become contaminated. That contamination created a brain tumor that affected my brain directly, without my permission or knowledge, and that brain condition was what I was FORCED to live with, a condition I did not create, so therefore my reality as it exists now was not MY choice. MY experience proves your theory is not entirely true. We do NOT fully create our own reality.

I absolutely disagree with him when he states the challenge is to raise the challenge/ stress line to stay more in the challenge - and to use meditation to do so.
He assumes that `today`s world` is fine, and we just need to adapt to it.

Caroline Tipler I did not hear that at all...I get the concern though. Nevertheless, I have much less control over the world than I do myself. I can work to ttry to change society for the better while trying to make mtself better prepared for the inevitable challenge/stress

    • @Tiprowable
      @Tiprowable 9 років тому

Candice M Yes sure Candice, looked at from a personal perspective then using meditation to create that space to see the bigger picture is absolutely a positive. That ability to see the bigger picture, and to see the constructs (and what is wrong with the system that creates the problems - broadly that we are still at the point of going after happiness with material stuff as a society) will not just then help on an individual level but will in turn create a higher awareness in society at large. THAT then will result in a revolution, a shift, forcing society to go to the next stage - such as happened with the Age of Enlightenment, or Age of Reason.
Hence my disagreement with him. We don`t really want to shift the stress line in society for that would hold back evolution of society (and we are currently headed towards extinction it seems). We don`t want to adapt to a dysfunctional situation.
Don`t know if that clarifies my position a bit more Candice ...

    • @candicemcmillan720
      @candicemcmillan720 9 років тому +1

I think I do get what you are saying, but if the point of overstress weakens ones ability to focus, concentrate and engage, then it still seems a benefit to the movement or evolution to be capable at the time of overwhelm vs paralyzed

    Bremmer
If you are interested in brain structures at birth and how they change over time, you can read this reference for infants (It has been known since 1988):1. Barkovich AJ, Kjos BO, Jackson DE, Jr., Norman D. Normal maturation of the neonatal and infant brain: MR imaging at 1.5 T. Radiology 1988;166(1 Pt 1):173-80.
These two for school age 1. Sowell ER, Thompson PM, Leonard CM, Welcome SE, Kan E, Toga AW. Longitudinal mapping of cortical thickness and brain growth in normal children. Journal of Neuroscience 2004;24(38):8223-31.
    2. Sowell ER, Trauner DA, Gamst A, Jernigan TL. Development of cortical and subcortical brain structures in childhood and adolescence: a structural MRI study. Dev Med Child Neurol 2002;44(1):4-16.
This one for post adolescents 1. Sowell ER, Thompson PM, Tessner KD, Toga AW. Mapping continued brain growth and gray matter density reduction in dorsal frontal cortex: Inverse relationships during postadolescent brain maturation. J Neurosci 2001;21(22):8819-29.
What I said was based on this finding and many others of humans--not fishes. What is the basis for your statement, Bremmer?
I found your comment: "... if he knew this before his kids were born he would have had more control he would have taught them better." to be completely baseless. I did know this before my children were born. And they have turned out and are turning out very well.
The statement about mantras referred to those used during TM practice. Yes, other meditations use mantras with meaning. TM uses the sound value of the mantra.
Your discussion of meditation practices completely ignores the fact that meditations are different with different procedures. i brought this out in my talk. You must have missed it. The paper if you wish it is 1. Travis F, Shear J. Focused attention, open monitoring and automatic self-transcending: Categories to organize meditations from Vedic, Buddhist and Chinese traditions. Conscious Cogn 2010;19(4):1110-1118.

Fascinating from intro to conclusion. Early part: Interesting how the brain changes from moment to moment. What about those individuals who are extremely rigid thinkers and who reject new information and experiences? Are their brains changing at the same rate? My hunch would be that they do not change as quickly and on a greatly diminished scale when they do experience change. Latter part: Can adolescents or young adults get anything out of TM or does one have to wait until their brain is developed enough to bridge to the state?

I challenge anyone who takes this as the complete truth or a complete lie to prove it. Show definitive proof that cannot be challenged and is absolute in all instances. Maybe when you try to do that you will understand truth is subjective to the perspective of the observer, or the eyes cannot see with the mind is not prepared to comprehend....

Josh Krause Even though I agree, being unable to prove or refute an idea does not imply what you said. (It seems like you are implying it would.)
The only thing that can be proven is a logical(mathematical) theorem within a model of a theory. Which reality as we perceive it, as far as I know, is not.
I'm sure a model of reality in which it holds and another in which it doesn't exist but neither of them says anything about the reality we "live". The reality can very well be an objective one, even if all the beautiful, consistent models we came up with assume subjective reality.

SaintCergue Just because you cannot think of it doesn't mean it cannot exist. But I also assume a subjective reality.
You are making many assumptions there, btw.: that it needs to be confirmed for it to be true, that at that level an observer is necessary or better yet: what if at that level an observer doesn't have to interact with it in order to observe it? I'm not saying it's likely, but it's nonsense to say something is nonsense. ^^ //Yes, I added a ~joke...

he has not said one thing that is true yet baby's move as soon as they are born they communicate as soon as they leave the womb, they start distinguishing shape right away. his kid's must be slower then the average if that is where he gets that information.
kids mind grow from birth if your kid don't listen by the age of ten you are a poor parent.
He is telling you how the synapse are firing.but that is just observation what he is saying that means is just opinion or theory. The only thing he said right so far up to 29;59 is we can let the outside stimuli affect out brain however if you raise the child right then they will learn not to let their mind be molded by what it takes in.
After 29;59 it gets interesting however, if he knew this before his kids were born he would have had more control he would have taught them better.
This is why kids from Asia are more advanced most have grown up in the culture where this (meditation ) is more prevalent.
The more of the world you see and hold in the brain the worst it is for you it is just more noise, you need to empty the mind you can be awake in a no thought state.
    that is bliss.
there are many meditation, for healing it increases the white cells in the body, tummo meditation you can control the body temperature.
mindfulness stress reduction. control and stop pain. all using the mind in meditation. there are many levels you can reach in meditation.
The eyes open happens when you practice, it take time to get to the point where your mind is in a state of meditation at all times or super consciousness state you can just close your eyes and go to the no thought state. the state beyond this is the Akashic state.
He said mantras don't mean any thing that is not true you are asking for something like the Om Mani Padme Hum, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion.
He uses the literature but he don't fully understand it.
the answer to the last question.
the consciousness is separate from the brain so if some thing happened to the brain you will not lose it.
like the serpent and the rainbow the body appears to be dead but the consciousness knows all that is happening

Bremmer Mandrake Lol, gg you fool, how much derailed you have to be to impose your agenda onto the content of this video in order to create an argument, seriously!?
First, go ask a newborn kid how s/he feels, I'm sure s/he'll articulate a profound response to you right away.
He's referring to communication as we know it, not that kids communicate within the limits of their ability to express themselves in any way after they're born.
Also, you would have to be enlightened in the first place to teach your kids in such a way the stimuli wouldn't mold their mind. Highly improbable and in most cases all over the world impossible to apply. You would do more harm to that kid than good, unless you're locked up somewhere high in the mountains and have a deep knowledge of the outer world to pass onto that kid before s/he ventures into it.
Understanding things from higher perspective is, honestly, quite intriguing and can even throw a person into a state of madness. Without proper training, people go suicidal. I know, cause I experienced that madness of nothingness and meaninglessness of everything, arbitrary illusions we label the reality. The parts we play in the theater of life. And it was hard to cope with at first, it was an existential crisis. Kid's mind would probably not handle that well. I say that because I'm somewhat mid-age and I got means to create temporary bridges between absolute despair and hope through the use of money, alcohol, weed, drugs or other substances and ways and stimuli.
All of those substances can be life saving and I consider them a must have by your side if you ever dare to journey into the unknown of the existence. You never know what you'll face and maybe that line of cocaine will make a difference between journeying on or killing yourself (bare in mind, I'm not talking about a life of commoners, rather that of mystics who dare to venture into such places in the first place). I would personally not send any kid, who hasn't learned about the world as it is, on a journey of existential exploration.
And pls, kids in Asia... You're overrating them with your statement, you mean those people who struggle to get by, let alone they would have time or think of meditation. LOL, please,... where is such environment to support that. In cities, most are baffled by the newest fads, in villages people worry about getting by and maybe in some Shaolin temple kids are taught to unite their bodies and minds as one and feel present and mindful of it. The only type of meditation your average kid gets, anywhere in the world where there is the internet nowadays, is Facebook.
Also, mantras don't mean anything if you don't know what they mean in the fist place or can't pronounce them properly. Om mantra has a vibratory and resonant attributes which are indeed influential, but not if you are not aware of it. Spouting Om leads to nothing, if you don't recognize the resonant properties the sound creates throughout your body emanating from your throat.
He's right on very many points, although he might not be able to relate his scientific knowledge or understanding to spirituality fully.
There's no need to quarrel, arguments are an endless cycle, every single one has its nemesis. We could argue for eternity, but instead of condescendingly looking at you, which (given your lust for an intellectual fight and the fact you're talking about superficialities much like - _which color is better for a Ferrari_) could be easily justified. I, instead, chose to share what I know from, both, personal experience and that of observing others.
all I'm ultimately saying is,... throw away your want to be right. Everyone is inevitably right because they describe the existence from their own perspective (however developed), the wrong is found only in differentiation of one perspective from another. I know you want to correct him, because from your spiritually higher perspective you're understanding the existence differently than he does and indeed, he treats it on pretty much basic level, but he's still right, in that regard about much he says.

    • @bremmermandrake
      @bremmermandrake 9 років тому

you said; The parts we play in the theater of life. And it was hard to cope with at first, it was an existential crisis. Kid's mind would probably not handle that well.
these are the only thing you say that I will answer because it is the thing you have most wrong.
Kids are way better because they have not been soiled or indoctrinated by life. they are much closer to source.
Every thing else you have said is also pretty much crap and shows a lack of understanding. Just as the beginning of the video was wrong. baby's and the people who are around them when they are in the womb have instant communication after birth.
The baby cry is communication do we let it cry no we know something is wrong so we tend to the child. the child then coos after letting us know we understood the problem.
this is where many people go wrong the thought that they don't communicate is just l ridiculous.
it is the poor parent who loses control of a child. they don't need to live on a mountain away from civilization to raise a child right and well mannered. How ridicules is that and your ignorance of what is going on in China well just shows your ignorance.

This is both fascinating and alarming at the same time, it proves that we have no soul.
As science advances, we realize how boring and mechanical our existence is, what a grim outlook.
Our entire personality`s are based on nothing other then the brains surroundings, we have no individuality at all.
Might as well just be brilliant robots.

You're forgetting, youtuber83, that we can at every moment, but particularly during moments of stress, chose our attitude and our response. I can choose to dwell in self-pity, I can choose to look on an incident as a challenge, I can choose to shrug and ignore a situation, I can choose to measure this against the values by which I've chosen to live -- none of this is mechanical. To be mechanical is living what is called the unexamined life. So if you feel you're becoming a robot, it's because that's what you are choosing.

Not true, as you get to the deeper levels of consciousness, you can see that the brain is the tool needed to process this reality, the the being that the information gets to, is much more. Knowing is not just data, but the who that gives it meaning.

28:00 "How do we maintain a sense of self if 70% of connections change ?"
    Allow me to answer.
Jeff Hawkins described how the brain works by hierarchical pattern recognition.
So, although your brain is in flux it operates on patterns : these are cells primed to fire
in synchrony and trigger a higher level of the hierarchy.
When someone calls your name, a pattern is triggered. It doesn't need to be hardwired.
Just as speech flows, or your fingers play an instrument. Patterns are formed in the brain by cell connections.

TM is easy to learn. Read ayurveda and the mind by David Frawley for solid information on the mantras that are used. I grew up nextdoor of a TM trainer who taught all levels of TM. I attended multiple courses for free as she held them at her home. The organisation rips people off under the pretense that TM is some sacred secret technique. It's not. It's the most common and widespread form of meditation. If you want to learn, the info is out there. I'm willing to teach you as well, if you want some tailored guidance. But please, don't buy into the greedy lies of the TM organisation.

    • @peaceispossible5326

As a Vet who tried some of the 'let me teach you' techniques like you are promoting, I can say with total confidence, that anyone interested should learn TM from a certified teacher. There are many people, who want to say that they can teach TM. From experience, it just is not true. The TM organization is the most sincerely charitable organization that I have ever come across in the last 40 years of dealing with such organizations. The science is there, the teaching is profound, but you have to learn TM in the prescribed way--I found out that the hard way. Don't be fooled by the idea that it's all the same...learn from a trained teacher, and then you'll get the benefits.

    • @rubenvandenbroeck2946

You are the one who has been fooled and who is fooling people. I have been trained by a certified teacher. She even taught the teachers and I've attended multiple of those courses as well. You call yourself a veteran but I highly doubt you have investigated these matters beyond the confines of the TM cult.
TM is ripping people off. They take advantage of peoples ignorance about meditation.
Ah well. This isn't worth my time.
"let me teach you techniques" What the fuck even is that?
Your total confidence is not founded in intelligence. It's based on bigotry and dogmatism which are fueled by erroneous interpretations of what little experience you must be having for not thinking outside the box.
That fact that you actually felt the need to attempt to undermine my efforts to help people avoid a scam is depressing.
That you would think you even have the means to doesn't bode well either.

Again, if you really want to be objective, look at what the David Lynch Foundation does--teaching TM to the most needy at-risk children, Vets, Abused women, etc. And the results are extraordinary. The claim that TM is a cult is simply not backed up by reality, TM has been taught now for more than 60 years and is being taught in public schools in dozens of countries--and again, the results speak for themselves... Science does matter and there are 700+ studies. The recent four year study funded by the Dept of Defense will be just one more indication of the extraordinary benefits.

Some good info, but it turns into a pretty hard sell for TM, presenting it as sometype of 'superior meditation technique.. But as far as I can tell it's just mantra yana, one of many mindfullness techniques which all lead to the goal. Mindfullness is the key here, not what tool you use to be mindfull. Here and now yall.

+intheyear12000 Agree entirely. TM is just a brand, consisting of mantra repetition, and one where they demand payment! +Bond Institute As someone who tried some of the 'free' meditation techniques out there--and then learned TM, I can say with great clarity, TM is entirely different. The course fee is small compared to the benefits. Why course fee? Because the teachers teach full time. It is their profession. Follow-up is available for life. Do you work without pay? I don't either. The organization is non-profit and they work with anyone who cannot pay. The David Lynch Foundation has given scholarships to learn TM to more than 500,000 people. In short, learning TM is the best thing that ever happened to me. And the cost is small compared to the benefits...

I was pretty enthusiastic to do TM after reading about it in a book. It said you need to be trained by someone. NEED. Found a course, $800USD roughly. ?. WTF. I also found Sahaja Yoga Meditation which is free all around the world and members that have had such wow experience have given donations which fund it. Teachers do it cause they are so inspired.
Has me questioning. TM does sound money orientated.

There are many different approaches. Some are free, and others involve course fees. The value of TM is that it is taught in a standardized way, and it is a life-time program. I tried many techniques, but nothing compares with the transcending during TM. There are discounts offered in most countries if people cannot afford it--and sometimes scholarships are available. The technique is the most researched over the years. Go for it...best investment in life I have ever made! Far, far greater benefits than I ever would have expected...

Peace. Man creates-causes his own ignorance, reality, by identifying with his body. The Reality, eternal Truth, that man is Spirit totally eludes him on that premise. Maharishi’s TM practice is the way out of ignorance and of Knowing outside of meditation, “A Man is a Man, not a Race, Color or Creed” (The Rev. M. J. Divine, better known as FATHER DIVINE, January 11, 1936, FATHER DIVINE International Peace Mission Movement Righteous Government Platform Convention in New York city):
“… This day, we do further hereby agree for this Righteous Government Convention as international, interdenominational, inter-racial and non-partisan, we this day shall agree to, now, henceforth and forever, never to call ourselves by a racial color.
Every law that is set forth under the Constitution that shall force men, and enforce its ability or power to cause you to go by the name of a color, as though a race, such law shall be refuted. We shall make them non-legal, for if they be legal, they shall be broken, if they are not according to the Constitution of the Government in which we are living.
“… These thoughts should be established in our minds. If perchance it is necessary in signing legal papers, to give what nationality you are if you are American you can say, ‘American.’ If they do not accept of it, we will not stoop to the stupidity of that prejudicial idea.
You could be, and can be classed as ‘American’ if you are American-born citizens, without regard to race, as it is commonly known as race, creed or color. You are supposed to be expressers of non-partisanism and non-sectarianism, and you are supposed to be non-racial, after the manner of the five races, as they are commonly known by history. …
Then I say, this Righteous Government Educational Department [of the Righteous Government Convention Platform], is to teach the younger people, as they may be termed, an education, such as the educators have forbid, and have striven to prohibit them from knowing concerning themselves and others, that they might keep them in the dark, and in lacks and wants and limitations, continue to rob them out of their equal opportunities and low-rate them, by calling them some name, and race and get them to endorse such a thing.
“In conclusion I would like to say, this International Righteous Government Convention, has been called for the specific purpose of bringing all of the representatives - as many as possible, together from all countries and from all parts this country, that we might impart to them our stand, with or without a person - what we will stand for, if it costs the sacrifice of our physical life, for the least little child shall be seen and known as a child of GOD, and nothing less.
“Get at the cause and eradicate it - dispel it, the effect will wane of its own abnormal weight. There is no need to talk about segregation and the discrimination among the people so long as you are segregated in words, deeds and actions, for the very words you speak, and the words you convey to others, they are contagious and they are operative and ‘functional’. They will take form as you speak them into action, the same as I have spoken into actuality MY Thoughts to the masses. They have conceived them, for they are contagious. ….
“I felt justified, and much impressed to speak along this line to the pupils of Our Movement, especially those who are represented in this especial assembly, because I desire them to know in the beginning of their educational career, that there is something greater and much better for them, than has been for the past generations where the so-called educators were segregated in words, deeds and actions, by their phrases and expressions which they used, therefore, they set themselves apart, and low rated themselves by calling you some special lowrated race, as they are termed to be.
“Oh, it is a privilege to realize GOD in the midst of them, is mighty to save. HE has brought you the victory, not only over these limitations, as they have been termed, such as segregation and these mortal discriminations and limited expressions wherein you were expressing, but HE has brought you the victory over the grave. …”
    Jai Guru Dev.

Many people have no idea what they're talking about. Even if they try, they simply don't share the experience. This is not the case with the gospel truth. Jesus, the Son of God became a man and showed us the model of the holiness and righteousness of God in human flesh; He atoned for our sins on the cross of Golgatha and rose from the dead by the power of God's eternal spirit! We're all fallen in sin and are in need of Jesus's atoning grace, b/c the wages of sin is death and condemnation. Receiving Jesus Christ in faith as your Savior and Lord is simple: say "yes" to Him, confess your sins, repent from them and thank Jesus for His love and grace.

If you know when you were talking about, you would know that God/Yayweh is an evil spirit fixated on hate and violence. Jesus was a good soul, but he was not the messiah. Don't believe me?
