    I'll have to go back and check, but I think I stayed at a hostel in Changchun, where they used modules that felt like a coffin. The high end modules aren't bad. They'll have a/c or fans, lights and more

    I forget the details now, but isn't this the first pedestrian street in China (built by the Japanese when they occupied Dongbei)?

    • @chopsticksandtrains
      @chopsticksandtrains  Рік тому +3

      Smart lad! I'm not sure about the pedestrian street being the first, could be... but you're right, the Japanese were responsible for a lot of the city design and construction. Perhaps one of these days I'll make a video showing the remnants and influence of the Japanese here.

      I lived in Changchun for two years. Life is very calm compared to other chinese cities. There are lots of parks. I think quality of life is pretty good. Prices are also relatively cheaper. It's usually full of college students because of so many universities over there. The weather is ok for most of the year, except for maybe early spring, which is very dry and windy. The problem is, salaries are low, and work expectations are not very promising.

    • @chopsticksandtrains
      @chopsticksandtrains  Рік тому +1

      There used to be a large expat community in Changchun, but it's largely gone now. That being said, there are still a few expats around that you might bump into. There is a sizeable German community in Changchun due to the Volkswagon plant there. Expats are treated, in general, kindly in Changchun. That being said, all across China there is a growing nationalism and a growing hostility toward 'foreigners'. But just for normal day to day stuff, the people are still really nice, in general.

    It might have been one of the bleakest, unappealing and dirty cities we've been to, in China - but there is a certain 'farmer-friendly' quality that's a good thing, they are more down-to-earth types than your Beijings or Shanghais
    It's not a great place for a vacation and it gets pretty darn cold up there.
