I am currently a tailoring student in England wanting to become a cutter. I myself have very recently trodden this path, that is to go to each tailor and simply ask. What Dege & Skinner are saying are exactly correct persistence is Key. Once you have contacts you can go from there. I am afraid apprenticeships are especially hard atm. This is due to a backlog of people due to COVID. What I can say and this comes from Pooles' and people from the golden shears and the SRBA is to do a course recommended by a tailor and whilst doing such a course continue to talk to tailors. It is what I have done and has gotten me many contacts on the row. If you are looking for courses in London Maurice Sidwells tailoring school or the London Academy of bespoke have great reputations. Equally 26 years of age is nothing to worry about alot of the people I meet changed careers, just look at Benson and Clegg's head cutter! One thing I will add is no tailor wants a cutter who can only cut. Start with coat making or at least the basics then move to patterns.

@@TheChapsGuide Thank you Ash! I really don't think people perhaps realise the criteria and hardships you must meet to even gain an apprenticeship!

Btw, does anyone know what a German or Austrian bespoke tailoring apprenticeship is worth on the Row? Is it respected enough to get a foot in the door?
I’m 20 and I share a huge passion for tailoring, now I’m thinking about going to Italy to study tailoring. Do you think it’s too late for me to start as I too want to become a cutter some day. I don’t have experience in tailoring at all, only worked at suit stores and read a lot about the art.

I think being a bespoke hat maker is also great. A beautiful perfect fitting hat is an eye catcher and gives an edge more of style to your ensemble.
There are some great rural tailors out there! Especially if you find one who has come from Savile Row. They are so much cheaper and with much research can be found to have the same quality as many large houses
Hi Ash, I'm a chap and -33C doesn't get me down. English tailors are tops for me. Love the style. My first English tailor in Canada was from Piccadilly Square and he made dress uniforms for English officers. For me however he would do made to measure in English, Scottish or Italian clothe so no custom suits for me.
Currently I have a Portuguese tailor who does work for me. He is top notch as well. What I have gathered over 30 years is all I need for the rest of my life. I do have custom English fancy shirts with cuffs, Canadian tailored English cloth.

Having a good tailor is half the battle of having great fitting clothing. They are worth their weight in gold.
Ash. Most definitely. Great advice As with all craftsman vocations as tayloring or gun making or watch making ect. you will have to enter into a apprenticeship. Most last seven years or so. Cheers Ron
I'm 21 and been working in construction, but I've realised that I love to craft and I would love to become a tailor, I think it would be the perfect job for me. I just don't know how to get into the tailoring industry as I have little to none experience (only a textile gcse) and little apprenticeships in tailoring
By the sounds of it, as much as this video beats around the bush really on the actual answer to this question, I would say it would be to move to London and look at getting work maybe in retail/fashion looking at colleges that offer courses in tailoring, textiles etc and see what you can get signed up to then spend spare time watching videos, reading books and practicing. Then walk the streets of London to the best tailors to gain the contacts needed
@@DadThatCooks hi Gavin, not to be disrespectful towards your point of view, I think Ash was outstanding in answering the question perfectly with the right amount of detail and background. I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation and the style of it.
I think it would be fun, to learn some sewing techniques, from my local alterations, along with a lot of practice. I like having my clothes altered ( Sartorial ) to fit better. And I can save money by doing it myself. And them maybe take on a bespoke garment myself.
Most men who care about clothes know--or think we know--what impression we are trying to create, whether that's 'urbane sophisticate' or 'rugged adventurer'. But how do we know what people really think of us, based on what we wear?

Sir if u not mind ! I want to ask you sir do u own a English bespoke suit ? And if yes from which tailoring house it is .
Sadly my limited finances do not presently afford me that opportunity, but if I was to select one of the classic tailoring houses to try, it would have to be Huntsman, who have the reputation as being the best ( and most expensive on the row). Second would be Anderson & Sheppard, just because that is the tailor of the King and I would like the opportunity to share a tailor with my Sovereign Monarch.
