Mesenbrink, from my eyes, is one of the most impressive freshman I’ve seen in a long time. For a weight like 65? Just an absolute points machine. The Nickal/Nolf reference is accurate. No one should bat an eye if he never loses another match in college.
Mess is gonna be the Supreme Master in Commander of USA Wrestling in the future
Since there was two four-time national champs in this year's finals I would love to hear you guys rank your modern four-time national champs.
Stalling needs to be called - so many matches where stalling did not get called
Once a wrestler stops going forward it should be called
in the finals Starocci stalled the entire third period and was not called
I agree like Figueroa backing up the whole match.
It's different with each ref. Having the pushout would add points and force guys to circle like freestyle
It's insane that the match with the most offense from both guys (165) resulted in more Stalling calls than every other match combined. I will never forget them trying to steal the 2024 national championship from David Carr, the better wrestler clearly.
I was hating on Daton this weekend and after seeing his post match interview, I feel bad lol. He seems like a good dude and he deserves respect. 4x finalist, Bummer he couldn’t ever get it done but Vito deserved that win.

Does he deserve respect overall, yes. Does he deserve to win a national title, not a chance. He didn’t deserve the win over Ragusin in the semis. Did you guys know in all four of his finals he has a combined total of zero takedowns? Just because he was getting teary eyed, doesn’t mean he deserves our sympathy. EVERYONE wants to win, and he wants to win by doing absolutely nothing.

Ben has a bias to be fair, but Carr won that match even with them trying to steal it from them. Love to see it!
We definitely need to make the stalling calls easier for referees. Every stall call is just so subjective. I'd also like to see reversals get 3 points instead of 2. I'd think they are at least as hard as a takedown and should be rewarded.
I think takedowns and reversals each should be worth 250 points. Escapes 175 points. Back points 200 - 500.
Kasak was amazing!
I was impressed with crookham and nasir Bailey both deserved to be in the finals over fix at least they came to try to win as freshman it's going to be fun watching them win their crowns and it would have been great to see either of their matches on TV or even UA-cam to me that along with Griffith vs car were the matches to watch in wrestle backs
On daton fix, was a combo of everything, 26 years old, boring wrestling, stalling getting reversed, totality of circumstances, not just one thing
it’s his boring, stalling style of wrestling more than anything else. if he was fun to watch, no one would complain

Gomez, Griffith, Lewis, and Fix are all super seniors. 26 years old. All older than Gable Stevenson. Most loved. Fix gets hate. As many pointing out with Fix his style does not appeal. Age. I think it started with PEDs. I was impress by his post match interview. He showed class.
I came here to show my respect for a storied career. Just making it to the college level is a feat, let alone making it to the tournament and being a all-American. He gave it his all. I true fans of the sport will show him the respect he deserves. Good luck with the next level.

That second stalling in the 2nd period was bs. I am glad D.C was announcing. They called him for stalling as he was shooting. So was the one at the beginning of the 3rd. Carr was working to ride. For those saying only one because he stalled, what match were you watching. Carr got two takedowns, and controlled him on top. ( I am a fan of good wrestling and Penn State, but those hating on Carr are off base) Two points Mitch should not have gotten for stalling. Oddly enough
that last 30 seconds Carr did not get hit for stalling. That is when he was defending the takedown, but stalling would have been warranted. Great match. The was experience over youth.
Thank you guys for addressing the Daton thing up front. Lost my voice over that down in KC this weekend. Credit to Vito for prevailing despite the antics, I cannot believe he almost got away with it. They need to change the stalling rules!

I watched a match where Dake wrestled a guy with a visibly hurt shoulder. He seemed to actively avoid going anywhere near it. Was a real nice guy move.

Pretty sure those insane stalling calls were from the same Ref, which with video review, made the call that Braeden Davis wasn't taken down by Vinny Kilkeary. Breakdown…Carr shot 3 times in the first and got 1 takedown. Mitchell only took 1 shot in the entire 1st period and that was with 1 second left in the 1st , plus he gave up a ton of ridding time. 2nd period Carr took 3 shots and got 1 takedown. Mitchell took 2 shots zero takedowns. Third period Mitchell took 4 shots with 1 takedown and Carr took 3 shots. Carr took more offensive attacks in the match than Mitchell. Love Ben but to say that the stalling call were justified or to defend them is insane and biased because its was his guy that benefited from them. Like I said love Ben and he left his mark on college wrestling and how guys today try to imitate his foot wrestling defense. Or actually Ben’s offense, the only guy that had success with shooting on Ben was Pendleton. . Very few people have made such an impact on how guys wrestle in college.
Daton Fix is a great wrestler. No doubt one of the best to never win a title. That being said, he is also the most boring guy to watch, and his matches are almost always 20+ minutes long. Makes it really hard to root for a guy when all he does is run around, waste time, and win by the slimmest of margins all the time.
I ain't got nothin' against the guy. How could I? Never met him. But I can hate a performance. And I don't watch wrestling to be bored.
If you wanna win matches 1 to 0, you're gonna get a reception that reflects that score.

In the Hansen/Gomez match, I thought the first two-count back points were really fast. Michigan should have challenged that.
Honestly, I didn’t see a sense of urgency with some guys wanting to try to win, Mitchell got ridden for dang near half the match so I don’t know how he doesn’t know Carr has an extra point, and the continuous stoppage was annoying but the rest was fantastic
Thats exactly what it was...he didn't wrestle like he wanted to be there, and he should of had many more stalling calls. It looked like he was getting the advantage when he was the one attacking.
Put the videos/replays on the screen so we can see what your looking at.
That's literally what they do for freestyle international
They aren't allowed to, they don't have the rights to the videos
I get it but everyone needs to try to work something out. Promote and grow the sport is what we need all around. More videos and clips will help. Same with Freestyle, look at the stands in the major tournaments, there almost empty and never on TV.
I started routing for fix by 2nd round it was bad the lack of effort to score and dominate opponents made it hard to watch there was no way to root for him as a 5th year guy with the placement he had I feel for him to be that close every year but this had to be the worst performance ever for a finalist and his half of the bracket had nobody in it.
so Rocco Welsh no 2 at 174..... how good is Josh Barr then if he's had all year to go with Starocci.
earlier this year ben caped for not calling stalling on rear standing when the wrestler is clearly making attempts to return
165 best weight class and best final match, and they only discuss Mitch’s gas tank because Ben is butthurt.
True but i don't blame him. I also think this is a big reason Ben is moving on from flow. He has multiple guys at multiple weights who are big name and he can't avoid talking about them and doesn't want to be negative, overly positive, bias, or anything really. It's that or he's going to coach somewhere...

I have no idea what a takedown is in College Wrestling anymore. The NCAA bumps it to 3, but the criteria didn’t change. It just seemed like the wrestlers had to go above and beyond the criteria in order to get a call. And guys lost because of it IMO.

Interesting take that Carr had one too many stalls, I actually think he should have been hit way earlier in the first when he was pretending to try and return Messinbrink. Dude knew what he was doing lol
As an unbiased viewer of this match I felt the stalling calls were pretty spot on. If any were to be questioned, I’d say the second call came a hair too quickly. Off the whistle Mitch bullied Carr back two small steps, the Carr circled, engaged, and took a shot. The call came in 6 seconds!
Every ref would consider what Carr did action for a mat return. If lifting a grown man off the mat multiple times is pretending then that’s a performance worthy of no stall calls lol.

I think with all the upsets at 141, Bo had a cakewalk into the finals. I think that Mendez and Hardy had the toughest road. I think there were a lot of weights that were heavily weighted to the top of bottom of the bracket due to injuries in the regular season.
I'd like to have seen Hardy and Mendez play out without the spladle. That was over a minute in the match just laying there..

Per J. D. Rader's (the Penn State Hater) comment about the total team Score. If you want to adjust the final NCAA team scores based on rule changes, Then go all the way back to the beginning of college wrestling and adjust every team score based on every rule change implemented since then. But that doesn't support your narrative. Or ... accept the final team scores for what they are (rule changes ignored) and expect Penn State to break their current scoring record in the near future!
Takeaway was psu and Cael are too good - and it’s no longer fun to watch.

John smith needs to be checked. That was ridiculous in the finals. That was all part of the plan the whole time. Try to slow Vito down and get him out of his groove. It almost worked.
He won the challenges, so they were obviously warrented. He has no control over how long it took the officials to review. That's where rhe issue is. Or are you suggesting the plan was for Dayton to get cut and create all the stoppages for blood?

Why would John Smith need to be checked it's the only way to fix was going to win and it almost worked you said yourself if anything he should be praised
The gamesmanship gets old. Just let them wrestle already. Too much with the replay every :30 seconds. And half the time they’re wrong. It takes away from viewership quality.

In regard to the double challenge….the first review took 2 scoring opportunities away from one wrestler, Casey Cunningham then thru the brick and got points for Nagao, ALL BASED ON BAD INITIAL CALLS. Nagao was a bust transfer. I don’t think Nagao has a good baseline defense, he’s flat footed constantly, and puts himself in bad wrestling positions. I don’t think he can beat Lillendahl.
The truest thing JD said was that Fix was consistent for most of his career….Correct, he’s lost in the finals 4 times.
The most knowledgeable person on this show, clearly has the most wrestling expertise and knowledge….and he’s leaving. I’m not certain this group knows realizes the loss yet.
Andonian had such a great tournament he got pinned the entire tournament. Bastida didn’t wrestle with a broken digit….Ronnie Lott cut his finger OFF so he wouldn’t miss the rest of the NFL season. 🤦♂️🤦♂️

In addition to the Penn State staff, the training centers close to Penn State - DT’s and Bo’s plus NLWC keep Penn State in the forefront.
Aaron Brooks was OW….how don’t you know this. Aaron AFTER THE FINALS had 96 takedowns on the year and gave up zero.
