I didn't understand why these differences between pitstops illustrates SMED. SMED is something different from that, isn't it?

Hi Vicious5id, if the goal is ensure machine utilisation is maximised, in this case to continue racing, SMED provides motion economy analysis to identify which non-value adding activities to eliminate as well as relocating the remaining "internal" activities (that originally require the vehicle to be there) to "external" activities that can be prepared for without the vehicle. These methods improve the cycle time of the pit stop ultimately reducing downtime.

Maybe you have to compare with a pitspot with refueling... 2007 F1 Shanghai GP Felipe Massa Pit stop

TWENTY guys, that's just incredible. Why did they have a four person rule in 1950? Also, what a crappy way to attach the wheels. I'm going to have to look up what the heck the mechanic is doing.

first, no fuel recharge, second, limit 4 crew, third, add the time of all 12 crew and idle time between pit stops and you have the real cost , anyway great improvement but apples to apples

Very true Raquel Gerardo. Different times with different rules and best known standards for achieving the lowest possible time in the pit. The interesting question is what is the cost of achieving the goal and the size of the prize?
