I am the producer of this OpDoc and I am a native New Yorker. I have been in New York long enough to remember a time before all of these "emergency exit" sirens. There were years when you could ride the subway and not hear this. For those who have wondered if I'm new to the city, I wonder the same about you- otherwise you might remember a time when these doors were silent. The gates started to appear in the early 1990s, but they were not considered “emergency gates” since they did not have the panic hardware. The panic hardware was installed in 2006 ending in early 2007 as part of the Booth removal project, “Station Automation Plan - Phase III.” The alarms were installed to indicate that the door has been open, giving personnel the opportunity to respond to its possible misuse. (That is: the public walking in without paying.) But, they are installed in areas where there is no personnel to respond to them. Nobody responds to them. People still walk in against the rushing crowds exiting. They serve no purpose. They are unchecked noise pollution. They should be turned off. The M.T.A. should re-think this bad idea.
-Put in buggy and luggage gates like the London Underground -Make the door use an emergency door release push pad, not a bar -Link the doors to a fire alarm
If the door alarm is linked to a fire alarm control panel then the alarms combined with the fire alarms would DEFINITELY pass 87dbs and it's a subway it echoes and most fire alarms can be 115dbs and when the door closes the alarm on the door will stop but not the fire alarm so the sound is bad for baby's and stressful for special needs people I'm special needs so I know it really can scare me and others.
CyberPrompt OFFICAL it’s not loud if it’s a voice evac fire alarm. The solid tones and a voice message telling people where to go isn’t bad at all. Those same fire alarms are the ones that are required in all new school in America exceeding and occupancy of 300 as of 2014. Those blaring fire alarms will soon be a thing of the past for many buildings
our turnstiles dont work for extra wide situations. to implement your turnstiles, we would have to add a tap in tap out system, which we don't have (we don't have to "tap out"), only tap in
Simplest solution seems to be to turn off the alarms, remove the signage entirely, and put a button next to the door or anywhere that's easily visible in the station to all commuters so that in case of a real emergency, they can push that instead of going through the doors. It's possible that people would abuse it, but you can punish people for that. And it's punishment for people who legitimately are trying to screw with people rather than attempting to get their baby carrier or luggage through.
Just got back from New York and these things are still going off. I heard one every time I rode the subway. The attendant at the Times Square has a button in his booth that can silence it while the door is open .
Yes!!! Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I hope it gets the attention it deserves. It is outrageous that this deafening alarm is allowed to go on and pass as normal city noise. Even the comments below indicate to me the loss of expectation of peace in our world. People are accepting all levels of auditory and visual assault as part of every day life, not just in the city, but everywhere. Let's take back as much peace and quiet as we can.
I hear that sound every month and I don’t even live in New York City. That’s because I work big box retail and every month I have to test the emergency exit doors. Which means opening them and making sure the alarm goes off and if it doesn’t replacing the battery
Require you to press and hold the bar for 15 seconds like in some stores. That’ll dissuade people from using it in a non emergency. Then install regular service autogates for luggage and baby strollers with a MetroCard reader.
At the 145th st station on the 3 train the ONLY way out of the station from the uptown platform is through the emergency exit doors! They have no alarms but they should at least have the high exit tunrstiles for exiting passengers. There are no regular turnstiles since the uptown platform is exit-only; passengers cannot board uptown trains at that station.
I think they stopped the alarm becuase the last time I was in newyork it never used to alarm. People use it and it doesn't go off. This was abt 6 months ago.
Well they could install magnalocks on those doors that could connect to a fire alarm system and only open once the fire alarm is set off then they could put pull stations in the area so if there were a true emergency they would only open from the pull station then they could make the turnstile's larger so people could fit a stroller.
That's pretty much what I was thinking. If it were me, I'd install a Detex V-40 connected to a maglock and set it for a delayed egress cycle so that when people try to open the door, they have to stand there and hold the bar down for 15 seconds before it will open
i don’t hear it anymore. i think they shut the sound off in every door. i live near a station that isn’t that populated and the sound doesn’t go off when someone opens the door
I can't blame anyone. The Turnstiles are old fashioned with no dedicated, automatic wide gates for wheelchairs and luggage. When the MBTA overhauls the fare collection and becomes cashless, the turnstiles need to replaced with power operated swing gate turnstiles.
Spaceshotx7 Which is what Boston is getting. We are getting the crappy upgrades via bolt on upgrades, aka: keeping the same turnstiles from before I was born.
It's crazy we're i live at they got them locked and my friends is in the wheelchair. I got a shopping cart 😞 we pay own fair All the time it's crazy what mta is to to use this needs to stop plus it' don't matter people still be hoping the train God bless everyone 🙏❤️
Even when the alarms were on I saw fare evaders waiting for someone to exit out of the gate. And they just walked right in. The sound made no difference to them.
To be honest, I thought this was comedy. It’s very very true however, just as we have a mosaic right inside everyone’s personal space, you can’t have it both ways.
Johnny Chimpo I mean they are called the ‘New York’ times so it makes sense that they would focus on New York issues even if those issues are relatively small compared to world problems, they are also a primary text based publisher and they cover all of the topics you mentioned in their print issue. If I see a topic that I think is unimportant from any news organization then I simply don’t watch.
Lol born and raised in the East Village of LES Manhattan trust me we (New Yorkers) do not care nor do we pay attention it’s a loud city don’t like it don’t come here
The alarms are off for a lot of stations now
Very true!

So i guess every time a subway train arrives its an emergency

Well, now it doesn’t blare at all
i Know this was published 2014, today in 2017 I have never heard and alarm go off and I have lived in nyc for 2 years
That's because ever since January 1, 2015, they shut off every alarm in NYC subways.
I've heard it many times
That's because this piece helped them rethink the stupidity. They were turned off January 1, 2015. You're welcome.

Ashley Lieberman what is visual assault?
These have been disabled for a long time now. Now everyone uses these exits. Lol!
This video was made 7 years ago!
I hear that sound every month and I don’t even live in New York City. That’s because I work big box retail and every month I have to test the emergency exit doors. Which means opening them and making sure the alarm goes off and if it doesn’t replacing the battery
I hear that everytime when I ride the subway
Ah yes, the "Free Ride" alarm.
Or "stupid magnet stripe card doesn't work" alarm
just put a large gate like in UK, we dont have any of that alarms. just a open all gateline if emengrcy or closed of station
WRITE A SONG ABOUT IT THAT ALWAYS STARTS SOMETHING .
The Emergency Alarm song using emergency alarms to the tune of music? Fun!
Wow its been so long since Ive heard one lol. Last time was probably me going thru the door after school
that's is a good question actually. I think it's only there for the sake of it though.

We had the same issue in Boston for a long time but they disabled off a lot of the doors. Now when you push to open the door you don’t hear anything.
0:30 I used to put my hand through the gate and open that door when my student metrocard wasn’t working lol
How do you fit your hands through the gate?
The alarm at Times Square was working just before covid started. Well that thing was really loud
never heard it but seen those doors open EVERY time ive been to nyc
I've lived in ny for years, I have never heard the emergency alarm ever when the door opens
jirizarry95
I used to hear it years ago. Now everyone uses it as a service door and it’s quite Convenient if you ask me.
they have been all turned off since 2015
BryanPlays -ROBLOX and Railfanning!
Thanks for the information!
I think they stopped the alarm becuase the last time I was in newyork it never used to alarm. People use it and it doesn't go off. This was abt 6 months ago.
Is this the worst thing about the subways you can think of?
Well they could install magnalocks on those doors that could connect to a fire alarm system and only open once the fire alarm is set off then they could put pull stations in the area so if there were a true emergency they would only open from the pull station then they could make the turnstile's larger so people could fit a stroller.

medeco locks but then if someone has a gun and starts shooting or a bomb and the fire door is locked what to do then?
Or do what San Francisco and London do and have “door type” turnstiles.
MikeJ 2016 You can still pull a fire alarm and defeat the 15 second delay.
Welcome to 2018 where Emergency Exit door alarms don't go off
That's because this piece helped them rethink the stupidity. They were turned off January 1, 2015 after 9 years of annoyance. You're welcome.

What about a second bar for emergencies
makes sense imo
Huh, I thought the alarms in the stations I use were just broken.
i agree!
It's crazy we're i live at they got them locked and my friends is in the wheelchair. I got a shopping cart 😞 we pay own fair All the time it's crazy what mta is to to use this needs to stop plus it' don't matter people still be hoping the train God bless everyone 🙏❤️
Something to get Used to if you Migrate from Another place.
They brought em back...
haven't heard that alarm in a while actually
Or just mind ya business like a true New Yorker would... n keep it pushing
i have never heard this in the past 5 years
That's because this piece helped them rethink the stupidity. They were turned off January 1, 2015 after 9 years of annoyance. You're welcome.
Im starting to notice that people who are not employed by the subway system, with the keys to these gates.
Chicago has wide turnstiles for wheelchairs, luggage and strollers that open with a button on the exit side or by paying the fare
I can assure you that an ambulance passing by with their siren is much more damaging.
Yes, but that siren has a practical purpose!!
@@kenwebbsite But it's still damaging.
@@kylehill3643 but it has a real purpose.
at my station the alarm doesnt sound they turned it off years ago
The doors also for people who don’t got a metro card
why so little views?
That's because they are careless!
the Emergency Exits are also used by sneaky Fare Hoppers
Even when the alarms were on I saw fare evaders waiting for someone to exit out of the gate. And they just walked right in. The sound made no difference to them.
Its like what high school is
People just got lazy
This video gave me hearing damage.
Silly New Yorkers , we don’t have that issue in London!
no one cares british person ☠️
To be honest, I thought this was comedy. It’s very very true however, just as we have a mosaic right inside everyone’s personal space, you can’t have it both ways.
Upset i just found this. Can you call yourself a true New Yorker if this is what bothers you?
Yes. 30 years living in Manhattan. And you?
Vice makes amazing video reports about Syria, Venezuela and Ukraine while the NYT thinks this is a pressing issue. Good job guys
it's an OPINION

The alarm I think are disabled!!!
What about now in 2019
I tink they need security that's better
The door never goes off for me lol
That's because this piece helped them rethink the stupidity. They were turned off January 1, 2015. You're welcome.
just turn it off!
And if someone cared about their hearing they would not do that
fine them

First world problems...
It's how the smelly homeless guy wearing a tent as clothing enters the subway for free.
