LOVE THIS! And I have to add, it's not just pie-making and room decor that can help heal a broken or wounded heart...it's plain ol' housework. Doing dishes, dusting, laundry, sweeping and mopping floors...the hard work itself helps remind the body and mind that life goes on and that's a comfort, particularly in times of grief and loss. These are wonderful life lessons from Little Women and I'm so grateful you took the time to share them with us. Merry Christmas!
Agreed ❤ Regular housework is what kept me tethered when going through a particularly long and difficult time. Something about working in spite of the tears was stabilizing and allowed me to grieve without fully succumbing to despair.
Really enjoyed this video. When my children were home, whenever they were grumpy about housework, I would tell them “Never deny yourself the pleasure and satisfaction of a job well done”. It is so funny now that they use this exact phrase with their own kids. That saying can actually be used for ANY task that needs doing, whether at home, work or even just personal goals.
Yes, in times of grief and stress I want to keep busy working. It's also my go to when others are grieving, what work do they need done right now. I'm not good at being the shoulder to cry on, but need a meal? Need laundry done? Need a sitter? Need a ride? Put me to work!
Jennifer!!! The last tip literally made me cry. What a dear and sweet reminder of what we as homemakers get to give to our families. Thank you for sharing your gracious presence ☺ It really is a light.
I can't get over how thoughtfully these videos are put together. It's so inspirational. Thank you for all the effort you put into these lovely videos inspired by books we all know and cherish. You really make these classic novels relevant in today's day and age.
Hi Jennifer! Are you familiar with the Advent/Christmas hymn "People Look East"? We sing it in our church every year. It was written by Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965) in 1928. (She also wrote "Morning Has Broken".) The first verse says "Make your home fair AS YOU ARE ABLE. Trim the hearth and set the table." Yes, do what you can with what you have; it's the love that counts. :)
Blessed solace…watch “I Remember Mama” w Irene Dunne. Poignant scene where Mama is worried about child in hospital and scrubs her floor for the second time! “Sometimes you just have to get down on your knees!” Lots of homemaking, family times and a GREAT movie.
I was excited to see this Part 2! Ever since Part 1, I've been aware of my facial expression when responding to my children. That "'How can I help you?' look" tip really stuck with me!
I once many years ago had vertigo quite severe for about a month and was unable to do my daily tasks and chores...it is until you cant that you see what you took for granted...love this video!😀😍
My mother always taught me to never to be a half job Hannah. That work is a blessing from God. Making sure the whole chore is done properly. Home is a place of solace and peace away from the world.
beautiful post. and yes, I still remember the smell of my Granny and the way she cleaned her house and her cooking .. I often wonder what my grandchildren will remember . .
I’m watching this while washing dishes & I wasn’t expecting to start crying on the last point. 😭 ❤️ I love this! Little Women will always be a favorite of mine.
I shared the home making tips with my grown daughter from your last video. It just so happened that she bought the book Little Women the day before at a thrift store. She loved listening to what I learned from your part one video as she has four young children. She couldn't wait to start reading Little Women. Being cheerful, joyful, greatful and helpful really does make a happy home. Your series really are inspiring, thank you for this. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
This was really great! It's such a pertinent topic. I loved what you said about work helping us through hard times. It reminds me of a line from the movie Out of Africa where Meryl Streep's character is dealing with layers of emotional stress and she begs the workers on her coffee plantation to give her work to do along side them- to literally relieve her mind. Great topic!
Life as a full time working woman is really interesting. Not what i wanted as a child, planned to have lots of kids and work at home. I find myself feeling so trapped to that stupid laptop and constant spreadsheets. All i want to do is sweep the floor and clean the counter. Wash the laundry and vacuum the floors clean. There is so much satisfaction making something gross and dirty and chaotic into something clean, shiny, and orderly. It requires thinking, but a completely different kind of thinking that my spreadsheet brain is crying out for. I know many women would trade housework for spreadsheets every single day of the week. But boy, it's not me.
I wanted to reply. You may discover that you have an opportunity to telework from home which is my compromise. I’m able to utilize my breaks and do the tasks that I love more so technically than my data entry. I wish you well and creating your dream life that your heart desires.
Lady Kathryn Perry The sad thing is, i do work from home. Yes, i can clean a bit on my breaks. But it's like I'm sitting there chained to my laptop while I'm looking around at things i would rather be doing. Or that really need my attention. Watching your home suffer while you are sitting in it is really annoying. I do constantly work on my perspective and attitude about it. I try to lean into gratitude for the many blessings associated with my situation (there are many). But i so have the urge to be released from staring at screens and numbers all day long. It feels like a waste of my life and it's terrible for my body and physical health. I just want to move and work.
I came up on the beginning of women's lib. I wanted to be a career woman and have been doing it ever since. But a part of me always envied--and still do-- stay at home women. I'm appreciative of having a job, but each morning is a chore to go to the office. I just want to be a housewife. Who knew.... And yes, I know it is probably not all it's cracked up to be, but I still wish.........
cjay I would be willing to bet 90% of the women in my office feel the same. We got sold a career ideal when in reality it's just a job. And the trade off for losing time at home and building families cannot be recovered by the time you figure it out. I hope our future generations of daughters are taught better. If you are pulled to a certain calling in life, no matter what it is, get it. And yes that will always include mothering and homemaking in the options :)
@@mschenandlerbong8539 Agreed. My office same. When pandemic hit, a lot of mothers found out it was cheaper to stay home--and wanted to--and keep their own children w/ unemployment rather than pay daycare.
Loved these two videos. The tip about when you get behind everything else will also be a mess I totally agree with. I find that with homeschooling especially. Part of our day needs to be dedicated to keeping the house up. That includes just keeping things clean and tidy but also laundry, dishes, making wonderful meals etc. I view it all together instead of trying to compartmentalizing it all.
Love that last bit because it puts so much more weight into fleeting days with young children... building a legacy in the little details and day to day is not a waste of time and energy.
Hi Jennifer, I am enjoying your take aways from each classic book. The items left behind from the one daughter sparked a memory for me: my brother was in charge of teaching me on Saturday afternoons how to detail the family car so it was spotless for Sunday. My parents did not want our best clothes to brush up against a dirty car and be spoiled. My brother went on to have his own painting business and hired me to detail clean before he painted. Sadly, my brother passed away a week before he was to paint our home we were building. I think of him often as I see our painted walls these 24 years and know he had his workers do our home gratuit. Character building chores for our children are not a burden but building block for life. Thanks again and all the best, Julie 🌷
I have to smile when you do these videos because so many of the principles you glean from these books are Scriptural---Proverbs 21:5 Good planning and hard work leads to prosperity; 12:14 hard work brings rewards; Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine---and we must not forget about the ants and learn from their ways in Proverbs 6! I know you love to quote that verse.
Yes! Love the last two-my home is my source of great contentment. And my godly mother in law is who I think of for the last point- her legacy of loving and serving her family, cooking their favorite things and helping us selflessly.
I loved Little Women so much when I was a girl. These videos brought me something I didn't care for as a girl, but I do now. I got nostalgic at the end, remembering my mom.
This is such a wonderful video... I love the ones about Little House on the Prairie and The Secret Garden too. As a psychologist, it is great to see you unpack the layers of meaning around homekeeping. I sometimes think of homekeeping as a form of extended body language... It is relevant to our self-esteem, our mood, and so much more. Thank you for sharing these videos!
Thank you for these homemaking secrets videos Jennifer. I am on day 6 of isolating with covid. When I watched Part 1, I was reminded of the book ‘What Katy Did’ , in which the convalescent Katy was boosted by having a wash, changing on to clean clothes and freshening her room. It certainly worked for me too. I think I will re-read the book to see if I can find any other homemaking secrets in it.
I took care of a lady for 12 years who was married to one of the first brain surgeons in the country. She told me the funniest story about firing the neighborhood's "in vogue" interior designer because of his excessive use of draperies and heavy furniture. She lived to be 100 1/2 and was spicy until the end!!
Jennifer, thank you so much for your homemaking inspiration via your lovely videos. I had read Little Women lasy year but did not catch all those homemaking secrets. I shared your video on my Facebook page.
Jennifer, you are a gem! I know of no one or any UA-camr who "champions" housekeeping AND in such an unusual way (reading classic novels and gleaning their wisdom!!) Thank you!!!
Hi Jennifer! The second half was just as thoughtful and delightful as the first half of this series! I am so excited to hear your thoughts on Anne of Green Gables! This is such fun and really quite educational! :) You look so pretty, by the way! :) See you Saturday! Love, Kellie
Buenos días Jennifer, I loved the video, it’s amazing how much we love our homes when we take care of it, even my kids after being on vacation when they come home to their clean beds, they say it’s the best feeling ever and I feel exactly the same.. I’m starting to appreciate and value my work as a homemaker more each day, years ago, I feel like homemakers were not recognized like they do now, I’m so proud to be a homemaker!💖 Thank you for all the inspiration!💖
I love love LOVE THIS!!!!!! This is so spiritually satisfying! Thank You so very much for your inspirational and wonderful videos! I can watch each one over and over! So elegant, and so elevated! Thank You again, Jennifer! ❤️💕❤️
Thank you for gleaning these helpful tips for us, Jennifer! What you said about family remembering scents of cleaning products and muffins, etc. is so true. It seems there is at least one child in a family that has a more acute sense of smell. One of our 7 year old granddaughters stated one day, "It smells like Grams' house." Her mother, our daughter, being dissatisfied with laundry soaps she had tried began using what she was raised with, the product I use. They all agreed that it was the laundry soap that reminded them of Grams' house. I love the portion of this video about the happiest kingdom being home!
My husband knows there is something wrong with my when I start cooking like it’s thanksgiving 😂. I also love to clean out my closet, skincare & makeup when I’m anxious/stressed, I think it gives me a sense of control when life is out of my control.
I love how you pulled these homemaking tips from Little Women (the first "chapter book" I ever read). Looking forward to what you pull from Anne of Green Gables!
I just loved this! I am so excited for the New Year, my resolution is to complete every chic assignment. I bought a little note book to write down notes and thoughts about every assignment! Thank you Jennifer!
I love these videos and have actually written all of these tips down. I was wondering if you would do one using Anne of Green Gables as well for tips. I would love to see what tips you can have in those books.
I really enjoy this type of video! As a homemaker of 49 years now I still learn so much from your series! I have not read Little Women, nor had I seen any of the movies, but after watching part 1, decided maybe I should at least watch one of the movies. I watched the one with Wynonna Ryder, and now am anxious to find the book! Thank you for sharing this!
I loved this! I think these types of videos are my favorites of yours. Girl’s classic novels are my favorite books, having shared them with my girls, this is such a fun revisit! My youngest daughter is pregnant for the second time and told me just today that she is craving my homemade bread and that “for some reason” she keeps thinking of the smell of the homemade cleaners, in which I used Dr Bronner’s Peppermint soap. Thank you for commenting on the importance of those simple memories. And I can’t wait for the Anne videos! She is an absolute favorite memory of when my girls were young. I actually used her unit study with my oldest in our homeschooling. …so much fun!
I always loved that series little women little men and Jos boys thank you for the video. I enjoyed your video on little house on the prairie things we can learn from that. I've read most of the little house on the prairie books.Llike you like I also like the classic books.
Great video, Hannah is a champ! Very clever to use a well loved classic to unearth some gems to help us all. (Favourite - regularity is key) You look beautiful, I love the contrast of the black and white with your colouring.
I adore these videos so much. I've learned to love more my homemaking life thanks to this kind of content. These are great homemaking secrets. Thanks for sharing them with us. It's lovely to re-read amazing classic books from a homemaker perspective.
Hi Jennifer, I loved this series and hope you will do more. I hope to incorporate these into my own family life. Also would you consider doing a video on your favourite stationary or offer suggestions on different types and where to purchase your favourites? Great video Jennifer. Thank you 😊
You might like the book the book thief I've seen the movie a long time ago I would love to read the book. I also like Anne of green gables I am reading the book series I watched the show in highschool on PBS I really loved that show.
Appreciate your videos SO much 🤗 Lost over a year due to ill health and many tasks fell behind! Feel it’s up to me regarding my mindset: is this my sanctuary or my prison?! I get to choose 👍 What a special society we have here! It offers both comfort and hope! “Make the most of what we have!” Wishing all the Happiest December! 🎄🌟🎅🏼
Oh, I do love your channel so very much!! It's so inspiring and uplifting. Plus, I love seeing your lovely face and hearing your soothing voice. Thank you so very much for all you give, Jennifer. You are a blessing to so many!
Merry Christmas, Jennifer🌲 This Christmas I got my daughter My Little House Crafts Book and it got me poking around for similar books online. Did you know there is The Little Women Treasury?? I am so excited! It made me think of you and this video and I wanted to share that with you. Have a lovely holiday!
This was great! There was one point I wish I could shout from the roof tops. The one about not trying to do it all on your own. You see, somehow, I was not successful in teaching my children the importance of teamwork as a family. One small correction: Beth was the third born, not the youngest. Finally, I have been studying the stack of books over your left shoulder, trying to figure out what the one on top is. It makes me think of the cover of The Little Women Devotional by Rachel Dodge. Have you heard of it and her other literary based devotionals? ♥ ~ Heather ~
An off the subject question. I see you have the book "A Vintage Christmas" on the table next to you. I'm looking for that book. Do you recall where you bought it? Thank you. Little Women is one of my favorites!
Hello Jennifer, I remember seeing the basin with built-in washboard for hand washing delicate laundry in one of your videos. Would you be so kind to please let me know the brand and style/model name/number? Thank you.
scrubbing toilet as solace? YES sometimes after an hot argument with my partner, I am so angry that I vehemently scrub the toilet, or hastily hoover the whole house :p it's a productive way to get rid of the extra energy created by anger :D

That's a great expression, Nadege!
Work is a solace? Yes, indeed. While waiting for news of my mother's cancer surgery on the other side of the country, I scrubbed floors.
Yes, in times of grief and stress I want to keep busy working. It's also my go to when others are grieving, what work do they need done right now. I'm not good at being the shoulder to cry on, but need a meal? Need laundry done? Need a sitter? Need a ride? Put me to work!

Well done, Jennifer! Thank you!
Great video, Hannah is a champ! Very clever to use a well loved classic to unearth some gems to help us all. (Favourite - regularity is key) You look beautiful, I love the contrast of the black and white with your colouring.
In Return to Me, there is a line that I have always loved, "I'm blessed with work."
My Grandmother Hallie’s spirit is often with me while homemaking. 🙏🏻
What a blessing your channel is! I’ve learned so much and am encouraged by you. Thank you for putting the time into these videos.
Both of these videos were perfect! I have always looked up to Marmee, and this is so refreshing!
I made baguettes the other day and kneading the dough was so therapeutic. Thank you for these encouraging videos.
I adore these videos so much. I've learned to love more my homemaking life thanks to this kind of content.
These are great homemaking secrets. Thanks for sharing them with us. It's lovely to re-read amazing classic books from a homemaker perspective.
Embracing the darker lip color. Looks nice. Appreciate your videos.
Thank you for another lovely video Jennifer . I absolutely love your homemaking series .
I enjoy these videos. Has your family read Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher? It's lovely and would fit very well into this series.
That was one of my mothers favorite books (my name inspired from it 🙂) I need to reread it.
Hi Jennifer, I loved this series and hope you will do more. I hope to incorporate these into my own family life. Also would you consider doing a video on your favourite stationary or offer suggestions on different types and where to purchase your favourites? Great video Jennifer. Thank you 😊

Love your tips. Thank you.
Brilliant insights Jennifer! Thank you for sifting out new perspectives from a book I know and love, to help me reframe the way I approach homemaking.
This was my favorite video you’ve done, Jennifer. Thanks so much for these beautiful insights.
Merry Christmas to you and your family also.💝🎄
Merry Christmas, Jennifer🌲 This Christmas I got my daughter My Little House Crafts Book and it got me poking around for similar books online.
Scrubbing when you're angry is a win win!
Thanksgiving has come and gone any 10 item wardrobe updates?
Anything new to replace the plaid skirt?
Plaid skirt is retired. I have not purchased anything new...
Love these tips! Great video!
😭😭😭after the last tip! But I appreciated it the most.
An off the subject question. I see you have the book "A Vintage Christmas" on the table next to you. I'm looking for that book. Do you recall where you bought it? Thank you. Little Women is one of my favorites!
Thank you! You can find it on Amazon
Love the show
Happy Christmas Jennifer.
Hello Jennifer, I remember seeing the basin with built-in washboard for hand washing delicate laundry in one of your videos. Would you be so kind to please let me know the brand and style/model name/number? Thank you.
Where do you get the lovely framed pictures?
The link to join the society takes me to the UA-cam channel, how can i join the society please
scrubbing toilet as solace? YES sometimes after an hot argument with my partner, I am so angry that I vehemently scrub the toilet, or hastily hoover the whole house :p it's a productive way to get rid of the extra energy created by anger :D
