You think that’s the smallest Walmart you’ve ever been to, come to Carlinville IL’s Walmart is even smaller, and we also have a very historical places in my very town, Al Capone wandered our very streets and built tunnels under our town to pass slaves underneath have quite a few haunted locations throughout our town as well
Our town at night is a ghost town and it used to be a slave town, so sometimes when it’s late at night and nobody is really out driving, you hear literal shackle sounds dragging around town, and our courthouse the very bottom when you look at it and it has the areas with bars then window and doors, slaves use to be down there hookup same the the old jailhouse (we have a new one that was built) but the old one you’ll def get activity
Not only that, but Carlinville IL has a place called the Anderson Mansion and it’s one of the haunted places here in Carlinville but it’s not the only, but one of the most haunted places, and they do allow people to stay the night, and I think it would make a great video too if you decide to come down this way
Josh, you were here in my hometown! I cant believe this. I've been following you for some years now. People speak badly about Cairo, but it's peaceful here. Most people work. Some hang out, some fish, hunt, and travel. It's not as bad as people say it is. It used to be rough but there's nobody here anymore. That spot that had the tile with bank on it was a bank that got burned down. I wish I knew you were here. I could've gave you some info.
I think the town and scenery look beautiful. The architecture and character of the old buildings are impressive. I am also envious of the slower pace of life the people must experience there. Cool place.
@LisaGoodwin-fk6yj I searched for the town in a real estate app that I have, and there are a couple of listings. It would be a good starting point if you are serious about purchasing a house.
Yes, racial violence was @ 7:35 critical to Cairo’s downfall, but it also has A LOT to do with power structures or lack there of. Cairo's peak population was 1920, so it actually grew after Will 'Froggy' James lynching. It really started to decline in the 1940s thru 1990s. I only say this because telling the full story of Cairo is critical, and unfortunately too many people tell half the story for a quick video hit. I studied Cairo for my Masters Thesis, happy to chat with you about it.
I have a family friend who was born there in Cairo, Illinois and and she still has family in Cairo,Illinois as well. She freaked out when I showed her this.
Josh I’ve been watching you for a long long time. Very proud of you. Very proud of you. Your bus is beautiful. You did a wonderful job. The curtains look great. You be careful out there. You be careful the world is really crazy but I love your show you and the paranormal twins are the only two that I watch. I feel sad for Seth, but life goes on.❤❤
I’ve lived in Illinois for the last 30 years and always heard about Cairo. Always wanted to explore it myself but never got the chance, glad you are showing this side of it.
Hello Josh good one what a fantastic video thank you such a wonderful explore and I hope you all stay safe on this road trip keep up the great work Josh
Been watching you and the others what seems like forever at this point. But I always love watching you. Your energy- your topics- abandoned is how I started watching you - I share the same affinity for the architecture, the loss of humans using those places- ghost hunting too- living the road trippin ! Love the bus! My grandparents made one out of an old school bus in the 60’s “The Polish Taxi” so it’s near and dear to my heart - good luck! And looking forward to the rest of this journey!!!
Want to find out, more, about each and every Building you explore. Fascinating. As a Crew, your energy and enthusiasm is captivating. Looking forward to each and every Adventure to come. Stay safe and take it steady. Love each and every one of you. X
I was so excited when I saw you were in Southern IL (my home) ❤️ We’re usually looked over and kinda forgotten about, so it was so exciting to see you post! If you find yourself out east, I also recommend you check out Welch, WV and the surrounding area. I used to live there and it’s old, abandoned mining towns throughout. Highly recommend! 🙌🏻
Thank you guys ! I feel that the chemistry of Dave, Steve and yourself is a perfect match. I hope you have a lot of fun finding new places to explore. Waiting for the next one. Peace out ☮
The bloke that showed you around genuinely seems like he would love to see the town thrive again. Its such a shame that its pretty much abandoned now. Seems like a decent community is left there and the history of the town is unreal! Love the vids keep em coming my man!
Hi josh,Dave and Steve, another brilliant explore really interesting, this was kind of scary coz of where you were Cairo, curtains have made a big difference the final touch, love your work looking forward to next one ❤🚐🇬🇧
I love how much effort Josh puts into giving the history of the places he explores. It makes it so much more meaningful to watch as he goes through the buildings.
Me and my mom has been watching you for years it's so amazing to see have far you've come and the bus is so great I've been waiting on this for a long time 😂 my brother showed us your channel and we've been watching it ever since my brother passed sadly this year and it's comforting to watch your vids
OMG Josh that Theater. It would be SO pimp to RESTORE that into an Arcade Hall!!!!! AND Broadcast the TOURNEYS up onto the theater screen YES YES omg lets do something LIKE that yes
Dont forget we need some machines for O. G. spaceshooter like "Cho Rin Sha" !!!!! hahahahah! And thats the BEST part NONE of us know it!!!! NO Arguments allowed ONLY smiles! And only beers yes.
Wow Josh. Been watching for 7+ years!! Illinois and Missouri have amazing decaying communities and towns!! I hope to see more of you’re explorations around here💪🏼
There is a book called bloody Williamson about the history all through out Illinois that book will give you more places to explore I used to live in Johnston city, IL for like 13 years
I am so glad you found Cairo. I commented a while back that you should check it out. The mansions there are beautiful. It is unfortunate that the town is the way it is. It has such potential. My mom worked at the nursing home there. She was so upset when they shut down. That is what the empty lot is. The medical center was right across from it. Thank you for visiting. My grandmother had pictures of what Cairo used to be. It has such potential. The crime rate is what scares people away. Also the taxes in IL are crazy high. If you go across the river to Cape Girardeau there are some very beautiful homes that are very historical.
We go thru here a lot to go to Kentucky. My mom and her side of the family used to live in that town. It used to be way more pretty than it is now. Her grandpa built some apartments there that I believe is destroyed. His house is covered in bushes now. When we drive thru that town I try and imagine how alive the town used to be. Hopefully the town can thrive again soon.
I would like to see u explore Commerce Missouri next. It's about 20 minutes away from my town. Exploring there at night gives spooky vibes and great photo opportunities!!
I put a thank you to you & your crew in my community post 😁 Plus had to order another shirt today 🤦♀️ Btw I am another viewer who lives in Illinois but I am located in central part of the state. Thanks for visiting our lil towns as there are many others to explore & appreciate 😊
Hi josh & crew. i love your videos & you, always keep exploring. Im enjoying your bus journey so far 😊 ive also been sporting the purple nara hoodie which i love ❤️
This is so cool to see, just recently Lamont at Large was also here, but he didn't go inside anything so it's cool to see into the abandoned when was already interested in this abandoned town
You should go to Skidmore MO... the town that killed a bully!.. estimated 3 different guns were used, no one claims to have seen nor heard a thing...no one has ever spoken a word of confession, and no one has ever been caught, in the murder of the town bully.
This is so awesome adventure!! It's made me what to watch Steve's and Dave's channels more being they are doing this trip!! Guys especially Dave being fron UK give that guy some subs 💯🎉
@exploringwithjosh you do very well with your history and relaying it to the viewers. Excellent visuals and you didn’t miss a beat when explaining the history! 👏🏻👏🏻
I've been watching you for a long time and this is so cool you were here. I live 30 minutes from Cairo and I work in Anna as well. Cairo also has Magnolia Manor and Riverlore Mansion both beautiful homes that you can tour. There are several areas in Illinois that you need to check out! Keep doing what you do!
These are the best type of explores, how cool to see places like this, must feel strange to be there and see them for real. Also love the Walmart/ Curtain making content 😂👍⭐️
Thank you for showing us another small town in America that has been all but forgotten. I think about the state of our country and the many who would find peace and sanctuary in a community such as this. So many stuck in cities or suburb’s with extreme cost of living and little quality of life. The infrastructure is there. Surely there are people that would rebuild given the opportunity. Why doesn’t our country make it a priority to rebuild these towns?
Hey, love the new look of the van, great job!!! Heads up, if you go south, the hurricane was so bad, there is tons of flooding and dams broken too! In Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, haven't heard anything on the Carolinas, but thought I'd mention as I heard Dave wanted to go. And he needs to! Be careful and be real bad boys!!! 😂
Really cool video man! No idea this place even existed until today. This looks like an explorer's dream town. Good to see you and the crew together and traveling meeting more of us fellow explorers!
The super long roads with just cornfields??? You don´t know what people do out there for fun?? well, when I was a teen living on roads like that we used to love driving around, getting high, and finding fishing holes... or car surfing.... but that was in Oklahoma, who know what those Northerners were up to ;P

Josh, invest in some thermal covers for those windows. In cold weather, those curtains won't block out the cold.
