  • Today is the day! Today is the day that I get to do a detailed overview of Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge The Diamond Jubilee Collection from Fantagraphics. I compare the book to other editions and answer the question. Is this really the best of the best Uncle Scrooge stories from Carl Barks?

    Omar, I can't believe you got me into Duck comics. I received my copy this week and will be reading it soon. I picked up the Life & Times book last year and even took a shot at a couple Mickey Mouse books that Fantagraphics has released which have been good. I'm a convert! Thank you, my friend!

    Fun fact. In 1981, Celestial Arts published a book named "Uncle $crooge McDuck: His Life and Times" (not to be confused with Don Rosa's story). That was one of the first deluxe, high quality Carl Barks book that ever came out. In a time where everyone thought that duck comics were suitable only for children, Celestial Arts decided to go over the top and published a Barks book that would earn respect from a more mature audience.
    The publisher of the book was Gary Kurtz (yes, the Star Wars producer) and featured a foreword by George Lucas saying how much he was inspired by Carl Barks. The book contained a lot of information and presented many stories in their complete form, etc. It was a very important milestone that helped the audience to appreciate Carl's work. This book was reprinted in 1987 with a slightly different cover, for the 40th Scrooge anniversary. You can see that cover on Inducks, the Disney Comics Database: inducks.org/issue.php?c=us%2FUSCA++2
    Why am I writing all these things? Well, it's pretty obvious that the 75th anniversary book you are holding in your hands, is a homage to that same book. The cover features a similar pose and layout as the old book. It has almost the same number of pages, it features stories with the same pattern and it has about the same size. It's clear that the persons who worked on this book, know really well the history behind those publications, and have decided to create a great book that stands out by itself, but also pay tribute to the previous book by Celestial Arts.

    The story in the late 1970’s, was if you sent Mister Barks a check for 100.00 (it could have been 200.00 or 250.00, it was a long time ago) and the scene you wanted him to paint, he would paint the scene, if he saw fit. Those paintings (last time I checked) are going for hundreds of thousands of dollars. I believe some of them are reproduced here.

    I have all Barks's Donald Duck (135) and Oom Dagobert (uncle Scrooge) (52) in regular softcover albums in Dutch, and all of Rosa's work in 13 more. Also, I have two hardcovers in English with all of Rosa. But, this new book would be a cool addition!
    Edit: ordered it!!

    Really like the size of it. Always enjoyed the Gladstone Barks reprints for being printed so big, and I think the first run of Gladstone albums will always be my favorite reprint series because they both retain the original coloring and are still printed on uncoated paper, which I think really suits the artstyle. This seems like a commendable edition though!

    One question, please: at minute 6.53 you open the page on a Scrooge watching the bin. Well, I don't know if it's written somewhere, but that drawing isn't Barks at all. I could bet something on Giorgio Cavazzano, but definitely not the Master. Is there any note about this in the book? Are there more drawings from different authors?

      Hopefully Fantagraphics will do a Carl Barks "Paintings/Fine Art" book as the final volume of the "Carl Bark Library." They did the same kind of thing with the 'Complete Peanuts' series with the final volume collecting most of Schulz's odds and ends work outside of the daily comic strip.

    • @stevenhutchinson182
      @stevenhutchinson182 Рік тому

      There is a long out of print (numbered/signed) book of Carl Barks Paintings called The Fine Art of Walt Disney's Donald Duck. I do not think Fantagraphics has the license to do their own art book version so to speak, but then I was surprised they threw the painting images into this book so who knows really.

      @@stevenhutchinson182 It would be a shame if Barks's paintings remained in an unobtainable, over-priced, out-of-print book that came out 30+ years ago. You could also see some of the paintings in little catalogs sent by "Another Rainbow" from Bruce Hamilton/Gladstone. I used to get these in the mail as a kid in the early '90s since I had bought some Disney comics directly from them. Wish I had saved the catalogs! Fantagraphics has used Carl Barks lithographs in both the Barks and Rosa libraries. And now in this Scrooge volume. Those are all good signs that they will produce a volume of their own. Here's hoping they do!

Also, did you happen to get the the Scrooge/Donald "Bear Mountain Tales" book released last month? I was trying to figure out how much of it is a double dip with other fantagraphics collections (Carl Barks library / Don Rosa library / Disney Masters hardcovers).

    Bah. Same thing published in larger size. Plain vintage colours. What a pity to do a "deluxe" anniversary edition that simple. I remember "Uncle $crooge McDuck: His Life and Times", that was much better only looking at the color added to the stories, what an amazing work made there.

    I just pulled the trigger on The Life and Times (Don Rosa) collection, but got stuck with the Banks stuff... does this scratch the itch (maybe with Bear Mountain Tales, or is that redundant) Or should I start traking down the Carl Barks Library?

      My previous experience is just with the Life and Times I'd read some online, spawned by that album release by dude from Nightwish, and a love for Ducktales growing up. Finally going all in).
      And kicking myself because I know I had grabbed and read a bunch of Duck comics from my grandfather's house, left by my uncle I assume from once upon a time, but no idea where they are now or what I may have had.
