  • My banged-up modified Walthers HO scale Car Float model gets repaired, painted and weathered, then installed on the layout!
Aloha and welcome to my HO scale Kawaihae Harbor and Big Island Rail model railroad.
The BIRR is based on the premise that the actual standard Gauge Hawaii Consolidated Railway never went out of business following the 1946 tsunami that slammed into Hilo.
My layouts have been featured in several of the major model railroading publications, including Model Railroader, and Railroad Model Craftsman magazines.
A recent move has caused the last small bedroom-sized layout to be dismantled. It is now being totally rebuilt to fit in our new home’s second bedroom as the top level of a two level, two scale model railroad projects.

The barge looks good, and adds a nice extra bit of operations.

A friend of mine's HO layout uses six barge decks which hold nine cars, 3 per track as off-layout staging. The barge end rail stops have couplers to hold the cars on the barge deck. The six barge decks are stacked on shelves under the layout and taken in order. His car list software keeps track of the cars on each barge and layout customer. So 54 (9x6) of the 100 cars on the layout are stored on the barge. A few like the track cleaning cars and MoW cars never ride the barge. An OP session is usually taking one train of 9 cars off the barge, sort them and take them to layout destinations and picking up 9 cars to take back to the barge and loading them. A typical OP session last 2-3 hours. I like the idea of using a barge or ferry as staging

Hi Joseph, great video buddy. I made a mistake by adding metal rail to my Walthers barge too. The weather changes just destroyed the rails and popped all of them off the barge, and now I can't find the plastic versions anywhere lol. I think your weathering turned out pretty darn good, I can't wait to see you do an ops video. Dave B.
