  • In this final part of the Walthers Barge and Apron kit we paint the top structure, assemble everything and run some trains. I also explain how to load and unload the barge during operations.

    Hi again. Here's what I did with Walthers apron. I've putted 3 straight lines instead of two curves on bottom. I hate the switch turnout point on it. Too cheap to my eyes. So, I decided to customized the bottom with one track on right side and two tracks (kind of gantlet) on left side to get access to the boat. The switching is made before the apron to get on either sides of carfloat double track. And another switch turnout before that to go on either sides of the carfloat. I mostly made the change because it was a pain in the a... for me to switch cars while the apron is on a slop. On outer side of the boat, switching was correct but on inner side, there was sometimes derailements. Finally too many of them. I correct it my way. But I repeat : I like yours very much. Weathering is nicely done. Keep on your good work.

    The deck surface outside of the float rails should be greasey oily black due to leakage dripping down from the cars wheel bearings over time.

    Looks great! Things weather in time sequence. I found that every time I had car on the layout that traveled or sat in the yard would receive a wash of something on the trip back... dirtier, grimy and maybe some wicked artistic youth or adult tags a car or two... you know. TIME looks GREAT again

      I normally do sit downs weathering 10 cars at a time. Then i'm done with weathering for a while.

    Hmm, I thought it was due to weight. I didn't realize it would be trackage rights. Are you modeling any idler cars.
    I like what mpeterll did with his float, he put a centerbeam under it, so if you do not load it evenly it will tip.

    • @DubaiTrains
      @DubaiTrains  Рік тому

      No fancy centerbeams here! It sounds like a fun idea. However i don't know if i want to subject fellow operators to that 😅. Maybe add a loud buzzer everything the float tips 😁.

    One BIG thing that POPS out at me. The switch points on the transfer bridge should be darkened from oil on the slide plates from lubrication to be able to move them. This also should be done to the lock keys between the bridge and barge. For more accurate weathering.

    Can i ask you where you purchased the badge?? I don't want to pay $70. Bucks its crazy that they want for them ..thanks, Joe

    I’m assuming the apron and barge are not powered? Probably don’t need to be since your using reach or idler cars.

    • @DubaiTrains
      @DubaiTrains  9 місяців тому

      Bingo! You could power them quite easily when you make the kits. For bow you really need 3 idler cars.

      Hi Joe, thanks! I got them on ebay as there is no store nearby. I was on the lookout for a deal. If my memory serves me well I paid around 60 for the set. One at full price and on on offer.

    why not just use some more rusty powders on the float top, that should work out just fine ^^

    • @DubaiTrains
      @DubaiTrains  Рік тому

      I'll try that. The apron also needs more grime.

    • @patrickuhl1921
      @patrickuhl1921 Рік тому

      @@DubaiTrains yes, powders are a great way to subtly vary colors on your models, the apron could use some black and brown stuff too. you can fix it with some matt varnish from an airbrush. it dulls it down a bit too. you can layer it on and on till your happy!

    • @DubaiTrains

      I am familiar with using chalks. Careful with the dull coat!

      @@DubaiTrains careful for what? Varnish coatings is what protects your model!

    • @DubaiTrains
      @DubaiTrains  Рік тому

      @@patrickuhl1921 Thats true, but like you say, the coat takes a lot of pigment away. More like 75% in my experience. I coat the weathered rolling stock but structures and roads I tend to not coat.
