- FIRST DRIVE: The ALL NEW Ioniq 5 is here and Hyundai is bringing big time electrification to their lineup. On the outside you will discover a hatchback/CUV design, 20in wheels, FULL LED lighting, and glass roof. Maaaaaaaan Hyundai/ Kia/ Genesis group dis a full turn around and put the entire car industry on notice!!! I sawone of these in person yesterday and it is an absolute head turner..and the girl driving it helped too... stunner!!! I'd be hard pressed to choose between the EV6 and this Ioniq 5 to be honest!! Since you were pressed between the EV6 and the Ioniq 5 imagine when I tell you their is now an all-electric Genesis GV60 now it’s even more difficult for you to choose !

I like what Hyundai has done to the styling of this car. They went with a retro futuristic look which will stand out and turn heads. I feel like Hyundai should continue to make their lineup of evs look retro and will still look clean and fresh

Yeah I really, really am in love with the styling of this car. Really attractive, futuristic but not off-putting. Still looks like a normal car but with really future-look.

I prefer the looks of the EV6, but I like that Hyundai and Kia have significantly differentiated their vehicles.
I'm 6'2 and sat in the EV6. I'm not joking when I say my head was rubbing against the roof. It was a Contender for me but it's not meant for a tall driver.

If I had to buy an EV now, I'd get this. There might be a little things that are better in the Kia, but the retro styling resonates with me more than the EV6. Plus, the Kia dealer experience leaves to be desired; I know, Hyundai stores also aren't known as great experiences either, I've had better service from Hyundai than Kia firsthand.
Without the $7500 cost rebate this car will not be competitive with model 3 performance. It will just plain kick the Hyundai’s ass
@@robertjohnson3975 Well, almost every new EV is sold with the rebate. I've had two friends buy their M3s because of it, so there's no reason you wouldn't buy the I5 without the rebate (you don't get it if you lease). The Tesla buying process is also painless from what I'm told (unlike any other manufacturer), and that's what many people prefer to buy their cars these days.

I saw one of these Ioniq 5’s driving in Oregon last week. Looked great! A Portland area dealer has these for 50k and 60k!!! Crazy markups. Thanks for the review.

Someone has been parking one of these in my work parking lot for the last three or so weeks. Looks great. The lights at night are super cool and unique looking as well.
I just purchased this ev for my wife last month. She loves it. She added a charger in the garage and now shes off and running.

I love the retro look and the pay to homage to some of the classics - looks better then the ev6 , I still am not a fan of EV’s but other then that

I love the ioniq 5. They are pretty popular over here in the UK. The front looks like a star wars stormtrooper and the back looks like something straight from the 60s or 70s as the car of tomorrow. The tire rims look like a spirograph
Stormtroopers in Star Wars were designed in the 1970s so technically the front and back look like the same decade.

I remember when Genesis was a luxury sports car for about five minutes,you even reviewed one of them. If the Ioniq is half as good as the Genesis,then it's transition into a EV brand is assured.

Does the performance of electric cars decrease as the battery charge decreases? You know like battery operated power tools, etc. Thanks!

Batteries are the major expense. Once they come down then the cars will be less expensive

Electric cars are so exciting and fun to drive. I'm so glad we had the recent push to make them more affordable for the average Joe(pun intended). I kept my gas powered car after buying an EV just in case, but now I never drive it and can't wait to get rid of it. I feel like I've gone back in time when I drive it just to keep it from sitting. This HI-5 is such a great EV, I hope they end up being solid and long lasting.

Ok so I just seen a commercial advertising this car. I'm not a Hyundai lover and no where near an electric car driver but I'm here because that commercial peeked my interest. This video here just made me want to go out and get one! I absolutely love this car now! Damn... I'm about to be broke because I'm in it for this exact model!

Love your reporting, but I wanted to clarify design background at 4:40... The design inspiration for the Ioniq 5 was from one of their own cars, not from a Lancia. The Hyundai Pony from 1975, which came Years before the Lancia Delta, which didn't appear until 1979. Both were designed by one of the most famous car designers of all time, Giorgetto Giugiaro. The most familiar Giugiaro design of this period to Americans would be the original VW Scirocco, which had his distinct "Boomerang C-Pillar", which all 3 of these cars had.

That's a good choice to put the shifter on the steering column that's where they are on automatic semi trucks now. You get used to it really quickly.
Very nice looking EV!......and I cant say that about most EVs. I'll never be able to afford one though, assuming they actually get the inventory to sell in the first place.

Great review but a minor zonk! you forgot to mention Charging port can be used as an outlet to power 110v appliances! It is a great feature no other EV has right now.
Hey Joe would this EV work as an SUV for rain, snow, etc. If I have a regular car for my daily driver? We average about 10” snow yearly, but every 6 to 10 years we get hit with 20+”. I need a cool ev that can serve as my older Range Rover replacement. Help!

hi from the united kingdom. both the kia ev6 & hyundai ionic 5 are growing in popularity, especially in the streets of london. i'm 16 so i can't drive yet here in england but if i had to pick one of them to drive it would probably be this one. would you possibly do a comparison video between the two vehicles in one video ? btw great video also, cheers from england x
Bought the Kia EV6 and LOVE it. I really like the Ioniq5 too. I did want the extra range so I got RWD GT-Line and it's STILL super fast. When it's time to upgrade my other car (2020 Mazda Miata GT), I'm likely going for the Genesis electric GV60!
This is one classy looking vehicle. Perfect proportions, throwback design. I would choose the matte grey for the exterior though. And I think the Ioniq should have its own logo as a sub-brand. Thanks Joe and Lori!
The only problem with the matte paint is its hand wash only and $1000 more. Not great for cold weather climates. I love my I5

Not too bad at all. I like fast charge feature, 80% in 15 mins. is pretty good. Decent power for the AWD version. EV6 or Ioniq?
This guy is my spirit animal, all the storage space in the car is evaluated on it's capacity for holding snacks.
So I just test drove the Ioniq 5 base model earlier. Looks amazing outside, very room and nice inside. There are plastics here and there and cloth seats but it is the base model so it makes sense. The ride was very plushy and comfortable, however it's a bit underpowered, even in Sport mode. My wife has a Chevy Bolt and that thing picks up faster than the Ioniq 5 even though its hp and torque numbers are less. Not only that, it stickers at $45k but dealership markup is $5k and some stupid "nitro fill" option for $900 lmao. Honestly, I can't justify this price tag for the level of the performance and lack of nice materials inside.

How were you able to find one in the US with the 20 inch wheels? I've seen at least 30 in-person but they've all been the smaller 19 inch wheels.
Exactly. Even on the Hyundai website. When building the ioniq 5 the top limited trim only offers 19 inch rims. What gives Hyundai?!
Just got myself an ionic 5. Boy that’s a fun practical car. Still working my way to full regen braking but wow so impressed. Hyundai always delivers the most bang for your buck even if this was a buck and a half

It is actually on of the better EVs out there.
The Ioniq5 is a great car if you live in a warmer climat. We’re seeing here in the North issues with the front cooling vents getting stuck open due to snow and ice, snow and slush accumulating inside the engine compartment, and the lack of a rear wiper is a problem.
Nice review with the correct amount of detail. I would buy this over a Tesla because it's cheaper on average. With that said, the industry needs to quickly find a way to reduce price and make it affordable for more people. Otherwise, the overall goal of the EV will not reach the masses and that's a shame.
I own a Kia EV6 and love it!!! The only thing I dislike is the state of MA not allowing Kia Access app!!

I bought a Tesla M3 in 09/21. wanted to wait to get this this vehicle but it got delayed and finally showing up at my local dealership. In the mean time I already drove 8k miles and enjoy driving M3.
Ioniq 5 is the comfy one and the Kia EV6 is the sporty one, Hyundai / Kia give the customers what they want for a fair price, very clever the South Koreans.
