Appreciate the explanation at the beginning, I already knew this but it proves you ain't just trying string on the viewers who ain't in the know with click bait videos or video watch times, by feeding us crap. Top guys.
Great breakdown with refreshingly (for the social media fitness industry) honest and open discussion about how they all have merit! Love the work y’all are doing to make the industry better and help people get into or further their fitness journey!
The best training style is one that has a little bit of each! They can help you fix weaknesses and complement other stimuli nicely! Buff dudes and buff girls are strong in multiple ways 💪
That's right ! Right now I'm doing all of those in the video the results are great I ever had 8% bodyfat with good diet and my abs are at their best + doing once 2 times a week jogging and sprints 93 kilos with abs 180 height thinked that this can't be achieved without steroids but it can ! .The results are amazing . Combining is the key :)
I purchased 2 i1080 bowflex recently but still like calisthenics. I think it would be crazy only using the new bench and expensive handweights. :p They are kickass. But so is the body.
Bodyweight and mobility bands got me fit during lockdown, I joined a gym a month ago and I'm pretty much an intermediate lifter for a fraction of the cost of 2 years of gym membership 💪 I agree that each style has its own benefits! I go between dumbbell and barbell bench press, since dumbbell allows greater range of motion but barbell allows smaller increments of weight
For me, I used kettlebells, dumbbells, and clubbells. I screwed up my shoulder lifting too heavy with a barbell bench press when younger. Caused a rotator cuff issue. But kettlebells, clubbells, dumbbells, and push-ups, it’s fine. No shoulder issues anymore. And no surgery.
Hudson and Brandon, I'm super stoked because I benched 170 lbs for a 1 rep max! My goal was 165 lbs and I thought for sure I would struggle with 165. Yats Ffub
Great video..i personally use all of them: push ups-handles, band-row,barbell - biceps and kettlebell - gobletsquat😊 more fun with variations, but in 50 years old and have 3 small children at home..when i was younger: only barbell- power lifting.. for middle age rekommendation would be Bands and body-weight training.. for a healthy body🙏💪
Great video and explanation! I got power blocks instead of a bunch of dumbbells, Mobility and Resistant Bands, Kettlebells and recently just picked up a barbell and plates. All in my tiny laneway house. And, you're right! Nothing wrong with combining everything into a workout plan. No wrong or right answer. Just gotta use what you have :)
Currently I use resistant bands, bodyweight exercises, and gymnastic rings to work out with. Like the functionality and the challenge with these exercises as oppose to barbell. Don't get me wrong use to lift consistent with barbell. But, as I got older the others mention were easier on.my joints and fell in love with the challenge. Good job on listing all pros and cons of each.
Sounds good except for resistance bands. They may seem to be limited in resistance but most people don't realize you can double, triple or more to create super resistance equal to if not exceeding the Barbell. The Blue ones run from 65-175 lbs. Use three and you got 195-525. Now try 4. However, I agree that if you use all 4 styles, the end result is greater than the sum of their parts. Good Video!
Good stuff as always. Started working out in my 30's a couple years back. Got in decent shape and then quit being consistent and have put a little weight back on. I am thankful my apartment gym is actually next level good. They have everything EXCEPT a barbell but there is no excuse. Thanks for giving me the inspiration to get back in there and get BUFF.
I've added band and bodyweight training to my strength training program because while my muscles are capable of lifting much heavier weights, it takes my joints and tendons much more time to become strong enough to handle the weights without pain or even get hurt.
There are no gyms in my area, so I think that the only exercise I can do is like body weight training also I have two adjustable dumbbells and resistance bands. Right now I’m just lost.
Hopefully you still stuck with it. I am getting into resistance bands and the more I learn to do compound exercises with loop bands, the more I enjoy them over barbell exercises.
I usually prefer barbells, but dumbbells are a lot more convenient if I do something like for example Farmer's Walk; that is probably the simplest weight exercise that I can think of, since it literally just involves picking up some dumbbells and start walking around.
As a guy that's been training for 25 years (the last 5 years in my garage with dumbbells), this video hit every point perfectly. This is the kind of video I'll show my son when he gets of age to train.
My buff dude bands should be arriving tomorrow, pretty hyped. Can we get more live or pre filmed follow along workouts? like you did with your HITT series, just more of them and expand them. My killer is feeling like I am doing the same thing over and over and needing variety
Could have added Kettlebells. You can use KBs for most DB exercises, and I find them superior to the DBs because the weight is not evenly distributed like it is in DBs.
I think you could've added another style and that is: cables. Though similar to bands in may ways; I personally love using cables because of their constant tension through range of motion. Cables can be loaded in very small increments as well and are extremely versatile. One of the big cons is that you basically need a gym membership to have access to them, and ones for home are not cheap.
I recently joined a commercial gym. I’m taking advantage of the machines and cables where it makes sense, knowing they have the advantage of a very even strength curve. Also, I have a lot of lower back disc damage.
Dumbbells can often be found for cheap on Craigslist or FB Marketplace. I have had a lot of success in building my home gym (weights and equipment) by getting them used
Same here, and this includes legs. When I left the gym pre-pandemic I was benching 225 x 10 easily, so these are not just rookie gains either. Not sure I'll ever go back, even though I liked the gym.
Doing a barbell squat with bands while hanging upside down with a pink dumbbell in your mouth is the best way to go. But seriously, barbell is great but loadable dumbbells are most convenient for home use, and bands and bodyweight are more specialty or for when you are traveling. And don't forget your chest expander!
I started using bands during the quarantine, they really helped my mind muscle connection. I've noticed that I've fixed some weak points now that I've finally returned to the gym.
Love how its so easy to understand what the buff dudes are trying to get across. Move lift enjoy your body get fit and be strong and so many ways to do it love there content 😊💪
I got a few short dumbbell bars that I can change the plates on - have virtually unlimited number of options, can go heavy if I want, and doesn't take up as much room as having separate weights. =)
I've been using kettle bells and bands together and the burn while doing my sets is hell and I love it. I put on a shirt I only bought a few years ago.. this week that fit fine when I bought it and now its so tight on me you can see my chest through it! Almost moved up a whole shirt size in 2-3 years :D Weird part is I know for sure I'm getting bigger but not really gaining any weight. I'd love to hear what you guy recommend if you know your putting on size slowly and gradually but staying at your natural weight. I'm 180 and for whatever reason I haven't seen my weight go up and I know for sure I'm getting bigger slowly. A video on this would be awesome. I've been supplementing too taking pre and post work outs and eating plenty of protein. Could it be that even though I'm working out hard my body just refuses to actually put on pounds because I've been 180 almost my entire life..? Any help on this topic would be most excellent.
Barbells also have fractionals that let you go up 1/4 pound on each side even. Crazy that it gets even smaller than 2.5, but useful for plateaus to just get that little extra bit
Thank you for this video. And thanks for being great sources of positivity and encouragement. Have to say, I'm a huge fan of the Buff Bands. It is hard to travel internationally with barbells and the bands have been fantastic travel companions (mixed in with body weight and, when accessible, other equipment).
What ever motivation you had before or weather you were starting on a slippery slope and not as consistent waheting Buff dudes really puts you in good form for working out 😊
There's a lot of good information here! What about kettlebell? I figure they might be too similar to dumbell. I am a calisthenic practitioner and I've started to add on some weight here and there to my exercises. (Weight vest, ankle, wrist, and more recently some kettlebells.)
You should do a video like this where you bring in experts who only lift the one way (might be hard/impossible for mobility bands only). Make them talk about their styles, and then compete in challenges you make! I think you did something similar before for like Xfit vs bodybuilder vs powerlifter
Re: dumbbell costs. If you already have barbells and change plates, plate loadable-dumbbells aren't so pricey. Although they have drawbacks of their own, namely the time it takes change weights if you're trying to do a quick drop set.
I started out by leaning heavily on cheap dumbbells I could get from Walmart because I had 4 kids under 7 and couldn't go to a gym. Fast forward, and they are all in school now and I have an almost full gym in my basement and still shift between all 4. Especially after 9 months in physical therapy. Having other forms of workouts when I couldn't lift weights was a game changer. Do what works for you and there is nothing wrong with doing them all as long as you are doing something!
Great video! I'm currently just using bodyweight and dumbbells at this point but hoping to get back in the gym coz needing to go heavier to progress. I miss the Saturday workouts with the Buff community but I still play the Metallica workouts to jam while lifting.
They are like macro nutrients. Gotta take all of them. They complement each other in specific exercises for specific muscles. If you do not have a squat rack to place barbell you might use resistance bands. It will not be as efficient as BB SQUAT but better than no squat at all.
Kettlebells? One thing I'd add for bodyweight is it's good for entry-level and expert. I feel like starting bodyweight (so simple squats, pushups,) can be pretty easy for most things other than a pullup. Then resistance does get a bit lower as you work your way up to say.. supermans, 1leg squats, handstand pullups, ect. but once you can properly do those movements it becomes intense!
Great video as always! Really informative, even for me as an experienced fitness goers. It would be perfect if you add cost-benefit analysis for each options. It will help people who has plan to build their own home gym to decide based on the budget they have.
I love the bands for warm ups and awkward movement patterns included in things like neck training, flies, tons of various leg isolations and just a ton of stuff that otherwise require a cable. Cuz sometimes I'm just too lazy to load the pulleys. I also like the hex bar. Trap bar shrugs and deadlifts just feel like looking into the future of your barbell deadlift, y'know, it's almost like an ATK rack pull where you get to put up 20% more poundage and feel that weight in your hands and off the ground. The only real main training styles I'd say I don't really utilize are dumbbells and chains, though I do have one adjustable olympic dumbbell for unilateral work.
If you have troubles developing muscle, best advice I can give you is you need to do things right from the beginning. If you don't have experience get help. Find fitness coach and invest in a meal plan. Good thing for me I didn't need coach. I just got a meal plan from Next Level Diet. My body got stronger after one month.
I have been training at home for a year and I do weighted calisthenics and bands 3 times a week. I train legs at a gym once a week which I can do without but I just want bigger legs. Lol
Yeah I was thinking the same. Add backpack loaded with books, weighted vest etc. Of course then you are not using just your bodyweight but nevertheless.
Any advices for a male endomorph? diet and workout? When it comes to strength training, i prefer machines and resistance bands compared to free weights and bodyweight.
I’ve always done body weight training. The way I progress is by maxing out every set with striving for perfect form and no resting positions or pausing between reps. I could only do 10 pull ups with perfect form no hanging 2 years ago today I can go 30+ and my back and bicep have exploded in size. Push ups I could do 25-35 2 years ago and today I can get 70-90 and my chest and shoulders are massive and defined. I rarely do legs because body weight squats just take ages to actually hit max reps 😂 luckily I’m genetically gifted in the legs department and with minimum effort they remain huge and defined. I also do boxing style neck bridges and crunches and combine all that with skipping rope and finishing off with stretches mainly splits.
Really enjoyed that, especially as I use all four. Got into resistance bands during lockdown and I would go as far as to say they are superior to weights for arms and fantastic for ab work. But they aren't as good for compounds and they are poor for your lower body.
The thing with body weight progression having DRs, is that it doesn't (except for legs) it's just Waaaay more complicated to progress which for most people isn't worth it.
The older I get, I find dumbbells give me greater contraction in the pecs and a bit easier on the shoulders for pressing exercises than barbells. It's also a lot harder to bench 100lb DB's vs 200lb BB.
The best training style is the one that YOU enjoy the most and the one that you will stick at!

Good overview. I'd just add that adjustable dumbbells can be much cheaper than a set of fixed weights, while taking up a lot less space.

They are like macro nutrients. Gotta take all of them. They complement each other in specific exercises for specific muscles. If you do not have a squat rack to place barbell you might use resistance bands. It will not be as efficient as BB SQUAT but better than no squat at all.

Was in the military and I train and compete in BJJ and I've been doing bodyweight forever now and I will do it until I die.
@Dachshund jump squats, jump lunges, bulgarian split squats, speed squats. Of course it depends on the day.
Or until you try BJJ on a guy who's really strong then you'll cave
Try kettlebell work, it'll complement BJJ well!
Another pro of resistance bands is that they are safe, you can't get injured, couple them up with BFR bands and you get a really sick pump!
You can get injured using resistance bands but they may be safer than the alternatives.
