  • My overheat safety system was almost perfect. The only problem was that the power relay was only rated up to 120v. That's no good for those of us in countries with higher mains voltages so I designed and built a power relay capable of switching up to 250v at 10A.

Just taken delivery of my first 3d printer that will live in my workshop and the first thing I started doing was figuring out a fireproof enclosure and a circuit to turn off the power if a smoke detector triggers. Found your videos while searching for information. Not seen thermal fuses before, those might be a great alternative. Thanks for putting this up.

This is by far and away the best tutorial video I have seen on this platform and the way in which you have the no nonsense steps is a breath of fresh air and a welcome reprieve from the fluff in those loud annoying ones that have text to read and some awful music, and the humour was a prefect balance, you sir have yourself a subscriber

I don't even have a 3D printer yet (will probably buy on black friday) and I'm already planning the safety side of things. My printer will be going in a large cupboard (think under the stairs kind of size but not actually under the stairs and has a full height ceiling throughout) so I'll definitely want Octoprint and a smart smoke alarm of some sort (maybe one that can turn off the printer via a smart plug too). One thing I'd really like to do, if possible, is stream the print video from Octoprint to my Chromecast device, that way I can keep it on in the background to monitor everything. I'll also be installing inline automotive fuses to the actual printer wiring and since I'm getting an Ender 3 I'll be doing the ferrules upgrade too. Subbed and looking forward to the Octoprint vid!

Sounds good👍 To be honest, Octoprint has really taken my printer to the next level of usefulness for me. As my printer is in my garage, I can now turn it on, warm it up, load up a print while I'm still in the house. I often go out to see the first layer going down but then I'm back in the house and checking on the print periodically. I know you shouldn't leave them unattended but with the safety cut out, automatic fire extinguisher and Octoprint, I feel as safe as i think I can be. Extra fuses correctly rated are a good idea but they may not catch all faults. It is possible to start a fire with a printer without having an electrical overload. I've just bought an Ender 3 and will be doing some setup and getting started videos very soon. Sounds like you found the channel at just the right time. Welcome🙂
