Last month, I received some money that I intend to use in a few months. So I decided to invest in treasury bills, rather than leaving it in my account. I was surprised when I got to the bank and they told me they charge a withholding tax. I couldn't believe it and thought the banker I met was giving me the wrong information. That's because I learnt on this channel years ago that there is no withholding tax on treasury bills. So I went to another bank to verify and the information was the same. If not that I know the credibility of the channel I follow and watch, I would have gotten angry. I just concluded that there were definitely some changes on the terms and conditions of treasury bills, which Flo Finance hasn't updated. I made enquiries at Fidelity, Zenith, First, and UBA banks, and I can categorically state that these banks charge 10% withholding tax on treasury bills. Thanks for this video Flo Finance, it clarifies a lot.
I have only 3 videos about treasury bills on this channel. I MAY have said it was tax exempt in the video I made back in 2020 and yes, back then it was. The good thing is that you asked around before investing. Sadly, this tax-free wrong information is still being peddled around till this day. In fact I saw a "financial guru" with a large following saying earlier this year that TBills are tax exempt and the followers run with such information. This shows that they don't even invest in these things they talk about.
There is nothing wrong with payment of TAX . We all pay tax in the several societies where we live and nobody should tell me what tax does for us. The education we all attained in nigeria is heavily diacounted. We go to hospitals without wait times and we dont have crazy policies that make up slaves to the government. If the tax allows me enjoy upto 80 % of the interest accrued. I think its a win . Thanks
Thank you for this information. What I did was to invest in treasury bills at 20 percent and then collected the upfront interest and bought another tranch of TBs at 20 percent. This would bring the total interest to somewhere close to 20 percent even with the tax charge. In your example if you Reinvest the 180k upfront interest you could potentially get something close to 20k which when computed with your initial N1m would give you about 20 percent. When you have higher volumes say 50m you can Reinvest more than 2 times potentially increasing the returns even further while creating a ladder of returns that could be reaped according to the frequency of your repurchase. Alternatively, you could Reinvest upfront interest in stocks or bonds. What do you think about this strategy?
Flo, you are correct regarding the WHT (currently). The comparison is rather generalized though i.e. b/w TBs and FGN bonds. My opinion is that for larger players or more savvy investors, you can also reinvest your upfront TB interest - especially if you have 1 or 2 other streams of regular income. This may not apply to smaller players, like I said. That said, I like how you've simplified it for your audience. Well done!

If banks don't list WHT on their investor's TBills statement, they must be offering less interest to those who invest through them. There are no two ways about it.
It depends on the returns on investment of the specific mutual fund. Different Mutual Funds pay different returns so you can't really put all of them in one basket like that when comparing to treasury bills.
If my bank offers something different, will I be here asking you to say where you invested without paying WHT? Two comments you made here, you couldn't even answer a simple question. ahhhhhh!
Please Flo, can you make a video on how to go about investing for people in diaspora. Please state all the different instruments and companies that can help.
Nigerians in the diaspora can invest in every investment opportunity I make videos about. For instance, watch this video from start to finish: ua-cam.com/video/z49RvM-JKoQ/v-deo.html
Ma, I think your return on the Tbills investment is 184K/815K i.e. 22.5% ( your principal is effectively 815k). However FGN Savings Bond might have the advantage that you can lock in a good rate for a longer duration ( assuming Tbills rates drop to like 12% this time next year, for whatever reasons)
@@FloFinance Yes ma, you are correct. Thanks for the awareness, I used to think Tbills was better than commercial paper, assuming that there was no WHT.
Dem use your head o. Zenith bank do not charge wirholding tax. They inly charge processing fee. I did one last week and collected the certificate today. Not witholding tax.
Flo, what formula is used for calculating t-bills interest? Is like it's different from how fgn bonds are calculated. 20.85% of 1,000,000 is 208,500 but why did they give you interest of 207,679.05 instead? 2ndly on the CBN site, t-bills for 365 days as at 24th July 2024 is 22.1%, why were you given 20.85%? Abeg make una explain give me cos I'm confused
The interest of 20.85% is per annum that is 365 days. But this TBills is for 364 days. 😄 Why they don't make it 365 and rest, your sister does not know. The rate on CBN website is the rate at the Primary Market, for those investing 50 Million Naira. The dealers in the secondary market are reselling so you will see different rates. You can shop around for the best rates but I no get time for that. Even if I get a better rate after lot of emails making enquiries, it will only make a tiny difference with my tachiri 1Million so I just went with my SB.
They charge, they just call it differently. They commission + VAT on commission.. Then they charge transaction fee on Tbills. They all charge money. No bank in Nigeria will watch other banks charging and not charge. Everyone there is greedy, so any loophole to pull money out of someone, they take it.
FGN savings Bonds pays every three months hence, if you invest in June, your first ROI should be by Sept. Pls, let's try to always create adequate time to learn about any form of investments we are involved in. The internet is their for you to learn on a daily basis. How could you invest in Nigeria's T-bills? With Naira losing value huge, inflation at 36%(if you believe that)? There's no way you could win! It's a losing proposition right from the start!🤔
So I should have used this 1 Miilion Naira to buy dollars at the rate of N1,500 today and you think you are a superior investor? Why do some of you think that whenever you quote inflation figures you are right? This argument is becoming tiring abeg. As long as you are starting off with the Naira, you are already done-for. Better not devalue it more buy passing it through exchange. The only thing that can change all these for Nigerians is GOOD GOVERNANCE.

Good Morning flo, I invested 21 million last three weeks on ZENITH BANK, I was paid an upfront of 4,183,000 or there about. The charges were Custodian fee and other small fees totalling about 27,000 naira or so. I never saw any where it was written withholding tax. Or will the withholding tax be charged later After one year?
From what I see, you must have invested with the June 26th auction rates which was 20.68% and from these numbers, you were paid 20%. If you do not see any WHT anywhere on the letter they sent to you confirming your investment, it means they did not charge you any. Usually, all charges are deducted prior to paying you interest. Unless by some weird process, Zenith deducts it at the end of the tenor. But on the same document where they gave details of this investment, you should see the amount you will receive at the end of the tenor. Thank you very much for this information. Finally someone that answered my question with details on top. Marching to my stockbroker's office! They have a question to answer.
Buy dollars at today's exchange rate of N1,500? This same refrain no dey taya una? 😆 The people that bought dollars in March are still holding it ooo, no opportunity to sell yet. They have not made a dime on it. Meanwhile the people that have been investing in Naira denominated ones have made money over and over. You all should face the government to fix this country else no "investment" is safe. In quotes because I don't even consider buying dollars and keeping under your bed an investment.
@FloFinance Dollars investment is about information. I bought when CBN injection 1.5 billion dollars in the economy to cushion dollars scarcity. It was trading at N1060 to a dollar. I am selling now at N 1600. I made N540 (51% return on each dollar) in less than four months. No stock will bring me such a return. Am currently waiting for CBN to inject dollars so that I can buy at a lower price.
@@trendingviews4086 I'm glad you accepted that it is very bad advice to tell me to buy dollars today. At what price would I sell? And you bought back in March? April? Because that was when the CBN patched the Naira. How many months ago and you think you made money? If you depended on this to eat, hunger for don kpai you since then. 😭
@FloFinance It's only land that you can buy and keep because it is expected to be appreciated in the future. Traders do not keep financial assets and shares because the value can erode within a short time. Changes in share price with a short period can yield more return than dividend.

😂😂😂 Florence oo, they shd carry you along, lol they should tell you their financial institution that does not charge WHT.
Ma which bank do you recommend for treasury bills
Please between treasury bill and mutual fund, which is better please
It depends on the returns on investment of the specific mutual fund. Different Mutual Funds pay different returns so you can't really put all of them in one basket like that when comparing to treasury bills.
Buy through your bank and see the difference
If my bank offers something different, will I be here asking you to say where you invested without paying WHT? Two comments you made here, you couldn't even answer a simple question. ahhhhhh!
How can i invest in that ? Plz
I’m beginner how can I reach you ma’am?
Please Flo, can you make a video on how to go about investing for people in diaspora. Please state all the different instruments and companies that can help.
Nigerians in the diaspora can invest in every investment opportunity I make videos about. You just need to meet the prerequites which is having an active Naira bank account and having a valid ID issued by the Nigerian government.
Yes but that does not change the fact that WHT is paid on TBills, right? that's the aim of this video.
@@FloFinance Yes ma, you are correct. Thanks for the awareness, I used to think Tbills was better than commercial paper, assuming that there was no WHT.
Yes, you pay withholding tax in 2024
Dem use your head o. Zenith bank do not charge wirholding tax. They inly charge processing fee. I did one last week and collected the certificate today. Not witholding tax.
Mmh. What discount rate did they give you?
@@FloFinancemy comments are deleted automatically, please provide a mail option let me share my certificate from Zenith
Here: floflofinance@gmail.com
I've sent it to your mail.
I use Meristem and they collect withholding tax according to the information provided by Meristem
😂 They should collect from everyone. No partiality
Flo what's the minimum amount to invest in Tbills please
Watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/i7iR8DURxMM/v-deo.html
Hmmm, so they take 19.84% for 364 days, that's to much,
Take or offer? Please watch the video again to know what they are taking and what they are paying the investor.
Confirm your broker???
uba and zenith bank has no withholding tax.
Ok thanks, I will contact my account officer on Monday.
They charge, they just call it differently. They commission + VAT on commission.. Then they charge transaction fee on Tbills. They all charge money. No bank in Nigeria will watch other banks charging and not charge. Everyone there is greedy, so any loophole to pull money out of someone, they take it.
how do I start fgn bond? how do I get a stock broker? which time August fgn bond is going to start
Go to my channel, lots of videos to educate you on investing in FGN Savings Bond.
Ok ma
I invested in FGN Bonds. I haven't received any interest payment yet. My first investment was in June?
FGN savings Bonds pays every three months hence, if you invest in June, your first ROI should be by Sept. Pls, let's try to always create adequate time to learn about any form of investments we are involved in. The internet is their for you to learn on a daily basis. Your comment just indicates that you are investing in what you do not have adequate knowledge about which is very bad. Hope you find this helpful. Cheers.
September maybe
FGN bonds are paid bi annually February and August
@@FloFinance exactly! If you had bought dollar, you would have enjoyed at least a 60% return in six months! (Your #1,000,000 naira would be over #1,600;000 naira) Tax free and fee free!😅
😂🤣😂 Ike abeg no make me laugh this Sunday morning.
60% in United States of Scam, innit?
@@FloFinance thank you for your wise responses to@ikepatrick9154 .... that guy is one of those we want to 'denigerianised' .... just clear his type off our nation
Real waste of resources.
I invested in the federal government treasury bill earlier this month of July through my bank. I was not charged any withholding tax
Still you did not drop the name of the bank?
Babe, mutual fund is better returns.
Hmmm another machine na be that o 19% +
Mutual funds of 5%?
@@FloFinance No I mean the money market for stambic Ibtc.
Yes, stanbic are best for mutual funds about 19.7% at the moment
Are u serious...do they pay monthly?
Good Morning flo, I invested 21 million last three weeks on ZENITH BANK, I was paid an upfront of 4,183,000 or there about.
The charges were
Custodian fee and other small fees totalling about 27,000 naira or so.
I never saw any where it was written withholding tax. Or will the withholding tax be charged later After one year?
4,173,000 naira not 4,183,000. That's a typographical error.
Nice one. Pls state the rate at which the treasury bills was booked
It is better to buy foreign currency than T-bill
If you have something to say, say it and stop getting side tracked. Makes your videos tiring.
If my video tires you out so much it means you are not getting value, why don't you stop watching me now? Go to where they make videos according to your specifications.

Please as a diaspora investor with this recent Government be very wary. It’s hard to do genuine business with a Government whose president is a crook especially when it’s with the Central bank or Shares/Treasury bills. See what he has done with lands and buildings in Lagos. Be very wary this Govt is just looking out to get money from any and everyone.
