  • The Honorable Randall Schriver, former ASD, Indo-Pac addressed the Student Workshop on Civil-Military Operations (SWCMO) on 6 April 2021. The Workshop, sponsored by the USMA Class of 1978 and organized by the Center for the Study of Civil Military Operations (CSCMO), is for Cadets enrolled in EV482: Military Geography, which is the capstone, integrative experience for Geography and GIS majors, and includes many Defense and Strategic Studies (DSS) majors as well as other Cadets who take it as an elective. As the opening keynote he set the stage for this Workshop by identifying what is at stake for the US in the region. As China develops its blue-water navy capabilities it will require greater access to more ports in the Pacific. Building stronger relationships with Pacific Island nations is paramount for China to be able to project power throughout the Pacific Ocean, and will lay the groundwork for future hegemony challenges with the United States. He sought to address how this rivalry is influencing our posture and challenges for response throughout the region.

Remember studying NE Asia in 70's learning about Mao & communism. Then in 80's seeing pro-CCP which when the USSR existed was understandable. By 90's made no sense and people telling me it was Beijing not Peking, my answer: do you say Hankook Nihon Deutchland Italia. Great talk hope he gets back into DOD.
