I'm in the middle of this job. I tried citristrip ($10 can), ez strip($54 gallon) and this method. Vinegar and hot water works significantly better than the commercial products! For the price of a gallon of ez strip you can buy your scrapers, spray bottle, big bag of .7 mil tarps and probably a step ladder, or beer for when you're done. Thanks for the help
My home was invaded by homeless criminals while I was getting chemo out of town. They defecated in bags and stacked them up in corners causing the home to be infested by flies which caused a brown layer to cover the popcorn ceiling in those areas. I was told to use diluted pool chlorine which almost killed me from the gases and burned my skin . I gave up and got quotes for a pro. It was $4000!! So it sat I moved out too sick to deal with it. I decided to sell my home and move on and start a new life I needed to try again and I saw your video. Bless you!!!! BI cannot believe this worked and I had no breathing issues or burning skin. It is unbelievable it works. I got a deep square garbage lid and tried the area over some cabinets (being doubtful.) I cannot believe it works. I still need to pay someone to help me but a handyman at $25 hr and I got this whole (25x33') room done in 2 hrs under $80! Thank you so much. I'm going to do all of the house eventually now that I know how easy and well it works. You are amazing. I subscribed knowing I'll learn much. 👍

Thanks for the great tip. I did a chunk of my ceilings a couple years ago with just water and it worked ok. I will definitely be trying your method with hot water and 1 to 10 ratio vinegar for the next round of ceilings coming up soon. The dragon scales tip is great too.

I use an airless sprayer, instead of the garden sprayer. Works great. I've never tried white vinegar but now I will. If this works, and I expect it will, it's a fantastic tip! Thank you!
I'm going to use an airless sprayer too but I don't think the water will stay hot if I do it that way. Do you think the water temperature even matters?

I was soo excited when I saw your video!! But sadly, this did not work for me. I sprayed it good, let it sit but the mixture did not penitrate. I don't know what kind of coat is on my popcorn but it's not coming off without a fight. I'll have to try something else 😑
Susan, I am not sure that will work. Join compound is way stronger than popcorn. I am not sure I would suggest that. If you do try it and it works please let me know. ❤️
I need to try this. I bought a drywall sander to sand the popcorn ceiling and nothing was sanded off because it was so thick. Then I noticed it was painted popcorn on my ceilings. Sigh.
I sprayed a section of a painted popcorn ceiling with hot water and vinegar, then another section with hot water and dish washing liquid. I couldn't tell too much of a difference between the two. I do know that I'd rather have soapy water dripping on me as opposed to vinegar 🤷♂️

I watched so many videos on this and this is the best suggestion I've seen. I wonder if combining it by putting a scraper on the end of the shop-vac hose and vacuuming it would improve it even further? And what are the next steps? Primer and hole filling (in that order) and then paint? Thanks! Great video, great instruction, short and effective : )
mybestideas1 I am not a fan of the shop vac at all. The hose gets completely blocked with the wet sludgy popcorn. The garbage can lid works super easy. The shop vac doesn’t catch nearly what the lid does.
If your home is 1980s or older, your popcorn ceiling likely contains asbestos. Either test for it first or assume the worst and get a HEPA filter mask before scraping. Stay safe, DIY-ers.
Herman Ripps my ceiling was a semi gloss. The vinegar worked well. I also made the water as hot as possible. There were multiple places I had to scrape twice. The first scrape will provide openings to the Sheetrock at that point adding a second coat of spray allows it to permeate through. Be careful not to get too overly aggressive with the soaking and scraping lest you damage the drywall in some spaces. Hope it works for you as well as it did for me.
Hey great video! I'm currently doing my kitchen a d dining room but sometimes the paper is peeling back a bit. After all the popcorn is removed, will sanding it down and using a primer before painting still be ok?
Mike Parks that should work fine. If after painting the ceiling you still see the imperfections you can take and apply a very thin coat of green tip join compound. I highly suggest using a ultra flat white ceiling paint
Hey man, we ended up repainting all the walls after we scraped the ceiling then painted the ceiling. It shouldn’t damage the paint on that walls but it will be a little messy on the walls but you can wipe off the walls with a damp rag. You could also add plastic on the walls with painters tape if you don’t want to deal with that mess. Hope this was helpful! Happy scraping!
Carlos, that is going to be a challenge. We had 2 bedrooms with several kilz spots and it was a bear to remove. I would maybe try it on the kilz area first before committing.
Great video Michael, I thought about doing this job myself. I have a 2,400 sq. ft. home i just bought that has popcorn ceilings. I have never done this, how long do you think it would take to remove all the popcorn ceiling in a home that big?
Good video... thanks. My ceiling is not painted but I agree doing it yourself....will save you a ton of cash. I have a 12x15 area and I was quoted 1500 & 2000 dollars. One of them had the nerve to say we only use quality materials....like seriously....think about what materials do you require outside of a scrapper, sprayer, hot water and mud. Paint no problem all in about 150.00....if this goes well I'll start up a new side job myself and charge half as much...laugh all the way to the bank.
Dan Borud I’ve used this technique on semi gloss. It is a bear. The best way to do it is if you decide to tackle it is scrap the ceiling first to knock it down. The solution can penetrate the paint better upon knocking it down. I would suggest adding 50% white vinegar to the hot water. The vinegar is an acid so it will eat the paint. I had a couple of ceilings I’ve done that were semi gloss and it is definitely more of a challenge than this video. I hope you have success. You might want to do a test area in a corner or a closet.
michele mckune I didn’t have any issue with that! I think those who had issues did not wipe down the final dust off of the ceiling before painting. If there is a layer of dust the paint will not adhere properly. We didn’t have any issues with that at all. I’ve helped a number of people and haven’t had any issues with theirs either. Hope that helps.
Shannon Mizell every ceiling is completely different. Some are super easy to remove and some are vicious. This ceiling was painters in my video. I’m not going to tell you that your is going to be as easy. I went through my whole house that was built in 90’s and they painted the ceilings in this house. I only wanted to share my tips that others have found useful. Hopefully, it works for you as well. There are no parlor tricks here.....I’m not selling anything other than tips and hacks to hopefully make others jobs easier.

Shannon Mizell you will know if it is painted by trying a dry scrap. If it’s dry it should flake right off without wetting it. If it’s painted it will feel like you are going against scales and the putty knife will not cut through it very easily at all. I would test in a closet or a corner that isn’t seen

Good tip it worked wonders no hassle but now by scraping the ceiling it uncovered some shotty prep work that was done (sigh)!!!

Ripcord I would encourage that but since I was repainting the whole house and getting rid of the avocado green I didn’t mind it running on the walls.

I have heard that if you first dry scrape to knock the top off the paint it will soak in better

What happens when the vinegar spray gets on the walls and the paint on the walls and starts to leave marks there

Mine is much more lethal. I keep nicking the paper with the putty knife so I now have a major skim coating job ahead of me as well.

You're going to most likely do a texture coat and or prime and paint....so that will eliminate any of the vinegar odor!
I tried that and it does not work on painted popcorn ceiling.

I don’t think it would work. Wall texture is solid join compound. That would be a challenge. The walls might need to be skimmed.

You can use water too HOWEVER if that is asbestos popcorn ceiling, it is super dangerous to do like this, especially without protective gear.

Shannon Mizell every ceiling is completely different. Some are super easy to remove and some are vicious. This ceiling was painters in my video. I’m not going to tell you that your is going to be as easy. I went through my whole house that was built in 90’s and they painted the ceilings in this house. I only wanted to share my tips that others have found useful. Hopefully, it works for you as well. There are no parlor tricks here.....I’m not selling anything other than tips and hacks to hopefully make others jobs easier.
Michael Janetis thanks for the response. I don't like my popcorn ceiling so I would like to try it.....I am not sure if mine is painted or not so maybe just water will work.
Shannon Mizell you will know if it is painted by trying a dry scrap. If it’s dry it should flake right off without wetting it. If it’s painted it will feel like you are going against scales and the putty knife will not cut through it very easily at all. I would test in a closet or a corner that isn’t seen
