Y’all are right on the money. Hetfield knew someone who took his own life really early on in his life; and he’s been a really loud advocate for mental health and asking people for help if you’re in a dark place. James Hetfield (guitar/ vocals) and Lars Ulrich (drums) are 59... Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) is 60... Former lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) is 61... Robert Trujillo (bass) is 58... Former bassist Jason Newsted is 59... None of them knew each other before Metallica, but Robert Trujillo opened for Metallica w/ the band Suicidal Tendencies - he joined in 2003.
James and Lars met in 1981 in L.A. when they were the only 2 posting ads in a local paper for a "heavy metal band" in the 'musicians wanted' section. They were 18/ 19 and James had just moved out of his brother's house and living in Ron McGovney's house (McGovney was Metallica's original bassist)... Lars was a Danish immigrant kid, still living w/ his parents... he was obsessed w/ the new European heavy metal bands like Motorhead, Venom, Saxon, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Diamond Head, etc. He would meet his bands when they came to town and made connections w/ people in the local heavy metal scene who promoted and traded the tapes of newer metal bands.
Lars auditioned for James' band on drums, but he was terrible... a crappy drum kit, couldn't really play... James said, "Forget it."
But then, Lars knew Brian Slagel, who founded L.A. metal label Metal Blade Records in 1981... Slagel said he was collecting demos for an album he called 'Metal Massacre', and Lars asked him if he could have a demo on the record; Slagel said, 'sure'.
Ron Quintana was another friend of Lars, who was starting a metal fanzine and couldn't decide on either 'Metal Mania' or 'Metallica'... Lars suggested 'Metal Mania' and took 'Metallica' for himself.
Lars went to James again and told him that if they could record a demo, they could be on an album... Eager to start anywhere, James took Lars' offer and the 2 recorded James' song 'Hit the lights'... they asked a local guitarist Lloyd Grant to play on it... 'Hit the lights' made it on the 'Metal Massacre' album in 1981 w/ demos by Steeler, Malice, and Ratt... Metallica's demo got a good feedback, so they decided to make a full band in 1982.
James, Lars and Ron McGovney (bass) rehearsed in Ron's garage in 1982 and then Lars' ad in the paper got guitarist Dave Mustaine calling him for an audition... Mustaine was older and his band Panic had just split up, so he needed a new gig. As soon as they head Mustaine play, they knew he was it... Metallica played their first shows opening for Saxon at L.A. club Whiskey-a-go-go w/ Dave Mustaine on guitar and James singing. They recorded a full live demo that year and re-recorded 'Hit the lights'... the demo tape 'No life til leather' circulated all over the USA and found fans in San Franciso, New York City and other metal hotspots.
There were clashes early on between Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney... Mustaine also got physical w/ James... Ron McGovney had enough of the mayhem of Metallica and kicked the band out of his home. Lars already sensed that they needed a new bass player... so, his friend Brian Slagel introduced them to a San Francisco band Trauma... Their bassist Cliff Burton was an incredible musician when he saw Trauma perform, and Lars and James asked Cliff to join... After hesitating, Cliff Burton agreed to join only if Metallica would move to San Francisco. James, Lars and Dave packed up and headed to San Francisco in early 1983 and played their first show w/ Cliff Burton there.
In NYC, a heavy metal flea market vendor Johnny Zazula and his wife Marsha heard Metallica's demo and were starting a heavy metal label in 1983 called Megaforce Records... They contacted Metallica about coming to NYC to record a debut album w/ Megaforce and the Zazulas offered to manage and book shows for them. But on the drive to NYC, Dave Mustaine was causing conflicts from drug and alcohol abuse, and he would get violent w/ James, Lars, Cliff or anyone he fought with. They decided before they reached NYC that Dave Mustaine would be fired ASAP and listened to other bands' demos to find a new lead guitarist. They loved a demo by Exodus, and decided to contact their guitarist Kirk Hammett.
When Metallica arrived in NYC, they told Johnny Zazula that they had to fire Dave Mustaine and send him back to California... Kirk Hammett had formed the band Exodus in San Francisco, but he felt out of place in that band. He heard Metallica's demos, and when he got a call to go to NYC and play in Metallica, he took the chance to join them... Exodus were furious and told him to get lost (They patched things up years later).
Metallica had been rehearsing in NYC to record their first album w/ Dave Mustaine... Anthrax was the NYC band that hooked them up w/ a rehearsal space there... With Kirk Hammett coming in, Dave Mustaine was fired one morning and given a bus ticket back to L.A.
Kirk Hammett rehearsed w/ Metallica in NYC and it clicked right away... James, Lars, Cliff and Kirk recorded the first Metallica album "Kill 'em all" in 1983, and then Kirk and Cliff were sent back to San Francisco by bus.
Dave Mustaine returned to L.A. and wanted revenge against Metallica... he was living in an apartment when he heard a bass player jamming below him. That was bassist David Ellefson, who became Megadeth's bassist in late 1983. Gar Samuelson (drums) auditioned and joined Megadeth... Slayer's guitarist Kerry King offered to play Megadeth's first few shows in 1984... then Gar's friend Chris Poland joined on guitar. That was the first Megadeth line-up.
After the death of Cliff Burton in the fall of 1986, Metallica was still touring on their 3rd album 'Master of puppets'... and Lars wanted to do a tour of Japan that year w/ a new bassist... Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records had signed an Arizona band called Flotsam & Jetsam and had just released their first album 'Doomsday for the deceiver'... Jason Newsted was the bassist, and Metallica was his favorite band - he had seen them play Arizona on the 'Ride the Lightning' tour in 1985.
Slagel was asked by Metallica to bring in potential bassists to San Francisco to audition, and Slagel asked Newsted if he wanted to try out... Jason Newsted decided to go. He said that Metallica was drinking heavily from their trauma and loss, and bass players were being turned away after barely playing... Newsted had the energy and the skills that Metallica were looking for and made the final cut. But once he was hired and on the road w/ Metallica, the band and crew gave him a rough time hazing him... Newsted became the scapegoat for the loss of Cliff Burton, but he proved his worth for 14 years before he finally left Metallica in 2001.

In spite of all that this new album, Patient Number 9, has been nominated for 4 Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album. The title track is about his wife attempted suicide in 2020, her stay in a mental hospital as well as his last surgery to fix his spine injury from years ago. Been following you fellas for sometime now. It’s encouraging to see old metal as well as many genres being revisited and talked about by the younger generation and across ethnic boundaries set up by the old music world.
Now, to the meaning and back drop of the song.
Think along the lines of Master of Puppets, that song is sung from the perspective of the Drug or the “Master”. And so is this song. It’s sung from the perspective of suicide. Suicide is the one singing the parts of the song if you will.
Also, and Just like Master of Puppets, there are two people singing or “telling the story”. It is demonstrating the battle within of those suffering from these thoughts.
I will tell you the majority of people have thought about it.
I myself had my stepdad (the man who raised me), commit suicide. As well as a nephew.
It’s good this is being sung about in such a way.

Back in the day more kids played instruments, you would talk to friends about it, bands got formed mostly because guys wanted to get together to play songs. Then you end up writing your own. Bands just kind of form.

Lars Ulrich: Drummer (Founder, the one who wrote the ad)
James Hetfield: Singer, Rhythm Guitar (The guy who answered the ad, co-founder)
Ron McGovney: Hetfields buddy, original bass player
    Dave Mustaine: Original Lead Guitarist
That was how the band was up until 1982 when they got Cliff onboard and canned Mustaine, obtaining Kirk Hammett after as their lead guitarist.
In 1986, when Cliff unfortunately died, they got bassist Jason Newsted, the one you mostly see in concerts with the shaved sides and long hair, usually doing some wild head banging and being a killer back up vocalist.
In 2000, Jason Newsted actually left the band due to creative differences, and in 2003 they hired on Rob Trujillo who is their current bassist.
You should watch Some Kind of Monster on Netflix which goes through the period of when Jason Newsted leaves the band, James Hetfield leaves abruptly for rehab for over a year and the band basically is left wondering if they'll make it out of this. I think you guys would love it.

Metallica songs are never about promoting a serious issues. They’re issues that we all feel about things within the world and within our lives. This song alone could possibly save a lot of lives of those who are dealing with it. Those who don’t know how to say it and to not be afraid to to tell someone and get help. A permanent solution to a temporary problem.

The one guy references how this would be misunderstood by "his people", I'm white as white can get and its misunderstood by a lot of mine too! When I first started listening to Metallica there is a lyric in a song called Blackened that goes "See your Mother put to death, See your Mother die" and I can remember people (including my parents) not liking that and saying that I was listening to devil music, that was telling me to kill my parents. But if they had taken the time to listen to what the song was actually saying it was talking about the destruction of Mother Earth from nuclear weapons, not killing a parent. Loved the video boys!

The "big 4" or 5 or 6 (depending who you ask) thrash metal bands all knew each other from the San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal scene. This includes Metalica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax (4) Exodus (5) and Testament (6).
James was from LA but moved to the bay area in what would become "the metallica house" Kirk Hammit (guitar) originally was with Exodus and when he joined is when Dave Mustane was booted.
The current bassist, Robert Trujillo was originally part of Suicidal Tendencies, he came into the band after Jason Newstead left, he replaced Cliff Burton who died in a car crash. Lars is essentially equated with the name metallica with James as a very close second. There has been times when James wanted to leave the band but those days are behind them.
All 6 of those bands are still making albums.

@@SouthernThoughts They can throw words around like "tribute", but I have seen nothing that suggests a tribute, we should stop the bullshit and be honest. I've seen Pantera 8 or 9 times and I would go if this actually was a tribute, but it's not.I don't care what Charlie and Zakk have said in the press, I care about showing tribute during the live shows and they have not done that. Also, why are charlie and zakk the spokesmen now? Just about every interview i've seen have been coming from those two. Look, I think it's cool that kids get a chance to see something they've never got to see before and the older fans can capture those warm fuzzy nostalgia memories from their childhoods, but it's a cash grab, plain and simple.
