Tell me if this sounds familiar? You’ve worked really hard on your resume - you’ve had your friends and family members proofread it. You’ve submitted it to dozens (if not hundreds) of positions, but you’re still not getting the results you'd hoped for. In this video, I'm sharing 4 battled-tested tips to help you make an ATS-friendly resume. Be sure to hit the thumbs up button if you enjoy this video and SUBSCRIBE for more videos like this!
As a recruiter at a Fortune 5 company, I can tell you that the biggest companies have real people reviewing resumes, they don't rely on bots or the ATS to "weed out" applicants. So, make sure your resume is easy to read and your core skills are easy to identify.
Thanks for the comments @CareerShakers! It's great to know your company and many more have real people reviewing resumes. I love it! From my understanding, many companies use an ATS to help them filter through resumes. Based on my research, most ATS software automates the screening process only allowing applications that meet certain criteria to pass through the system. The tips I share in this video are meant to help candidates that may be screened by an ATS, but that are also screened by a real person. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!
If no columns or tables, there are other videos advocating the use of left, center or right tab stops as a way to create columns in MS Word that they claim is readable by an ATS, is that correct or misinformation in your opinion @ Heather Austin?
I tried to download the template and it wouldn't stop downloading infinite copies, had to force restart my computer, and now i've got thousands of files to delete
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin I changed my resume to fit the job description of most companies. Although my resume was tailored. It was not shortlisted. Why it happened so
Another great and informative video! Thank you!! A quick tip: hierarchy instead of hirearchy - although I dig the pun if intentional - ua-cam.com/video/Uk_efUkiRVM/v-deo.html
Okay...Well, I'm sure your "tips" are relevant, but as a critique, you spent the first two and a half minutes repeating yourself while the viewers were waiting to learn what "tips" to use. Might I recommend introducing your key points early, and then diving straight into the valued information. This is a video, so the viewing process is iterative.
Misleading information everywhere. The fact that she says "no tables" proves that she doesn't know much about ATS. What matters is the order and layout of the tables, not the tables themselves.
@@ajibolaibrahim4425 It depends on the ATS parser; some understand the abbreviation, but others will see it as a bunch of characters and not a targeted keyword. Since we can't be sure which parser the recruiter is using, It is best to include the entire thing just to be safe, especially for degree and diploma keywords.
Hi! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Tables are not good for the ATS. Some of them, can't order the or read the information. Hence why you shouldn't put one on your resume. :)
Hi Wayne! The template is free. It will be delivered to your inbox. The toolkit is an option if you need more than just a resume template. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
Really hard to absorb the information through the cadence. Take a breath.. Talk "to" and not "at". The best "Professors" I've had at University have mastered the art of this. And while I understand pushing people to buy your toolkit and subscribe, it's too much. Again, take a breath and maybe not lead with it. I know leading with it is a popular tactic, but it comes across as just that, a tactic. I personally won't subscribe when people lead with it, but often do when if I'm asked after or midway through; which I notice you do as well, and also why it's too much. I really wanted to engage with your information right now, as I'm in the middle of a career change at an advanced age. I may need to actually hire someone, providing I can find the right fit for my specific needs and goals. I'm sure there is valuable info to be had here, I simply can't sit through it. I offer this as constructive criticism with no ill or critical intention. I know what goes into making content, it's a lot of work. I hope this feedback is helpful.
Hi there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions. I always appreciate constructive criticism. Helps me make better videos. What career are you changing out of and into?
I am a hiring manager for over 20 years. Without due respect, she is incorrect. 1. If ATS missed the candidates only on the basis of words, this whole system would have been removed long time ago. The system surely has the synonyms capability to match the alternative words. If not then what if the candidates we need wrote management, but the description wrote "leadership", you can imagine how much companies will lose the greatest assets? 2. I always believe that finding a job is a number game, and it's simply unsustainable to tailor each resume to each job. It's like a website that changes it's content for each audience, this is unrealistic.

It's so weird that Tina Fey makes these resume videos.
Lol! You're not the only person who's said that. :)
Thank you❤❤ for the video
Ma'am could you please do a video on how write a transfer letter gracefully and politely. TIA.
Does a Google Docs file work instead of a MS Word docs file? Is there a difference vetween the two to an ATS?
Great question. I prefer to work in Word, however if you only have Google Docs, that should work well.
Will Word Pad or a Libre Office program get past the ATS, or should I convert to a PDF?@@ProfessorHeatherAustin

Hey! Can you clarify your question?

Why it happened so
The Resume template you have is two pages long, i thought that was forbidden unless you got more than 10 years exp?
Hi! Yep. You’re absolutely correct. If you have less than 7 yrs of experience, you’ll want to stick with a 1 page resume.
I downloaded the resume template but seems to be incompatible format :S
Hi! Thanks for letting me know. Email me at heather@professoraustin.com and we’ll get the template and example sent right over.
Thank you madam.
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching!

What about writing abbreviations only. Eg instead of writing Quality Management Sysytem, if I had written QMS, would the ATS read it?!
