I learned so much about his iconic grandfather Sir Winston Churchill, the Queen, King Charles, past & present. I was in grade school when WC passed and his state funeral was on our black and white tv, my parents watching in solemn awe telling me "he was a very great man who saved England in the war. "🇺🇲❤❤❤
How I wish that people nowadays were more like this man - kindly, tolerant, authentic, polite and discreet. These days, people are just spiteful, confrontational, and malicious - just for the sake of carping and complaining - a bit like his disappointing son, Prince Harry. SO sick of hearing people complain about the ceremony - it's an old ceremony, a thousand or more years old - just like weddings etc. It is what it is - and thank goodness we have these traditions - which no one else has.
I agree. It is sadly a different world today and the likes of Nicholas Soames are dwindling.

I’m just very grateful to have the perspective of age. I was a 6 year old when Queen Elizabeth was crowned, and although American born, my beautiful English mother instilled in me love and respect for those ancient traditions. To say times have changed would be an understatement. Nobility of character is fading in this new world, but I hold out hope. God save the King!

At Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation, people were still on rations! The Coronation gave them hope! Why should these times be any different! Progress does no always mean you lose respect for important matters!

The millions of people that celebrated the Queen’s Coronation, had come out of 6 years of a devastating war, still on rations, very little in the way of food, money, heating, and cities still being rebuilt, after the terrible bombing raids.
So what is your point?
That people are hurting today? Tomorrow? The next day?
They were hurting just as much when the Queen was Crowned.
Blame the politicians, for they are the holders of the purse strings, not the King.

The Royal family brings more money to the UK than they cost the UK. Events such as Royal Jubilee’s, Coronation’s, Weddings etc are especially cost effective always bring in more money to the UK than they cost.

I do like this gentleman. He definitely has the look of Winston about him. Before I even started school, and I am 80 now, my mother taught me the speech of We will fight them on the beaches. I had a good memory and at 13 our English teacher read it out one day and asked if anyone knew who had written it. I was the only one out of 32 girls who knew. I later became an historian and a writer. Now I watch my iPad and enjoy everything I can find in films of Winston. I know it’s not accurate but it is highly entertaining which is what I need now. I am 5 years older than the king. and remember when he was born. Our art teacher took our class us to the theatre to watch the film on the Coronation. It was very beautiful but very long ❤ from NZ
Born in the oldest Canadian City, Saint John, New Brunswick of maternal loyalist ancestors we studied British and European intently. Been dedicated to the Crown all my life. Father and uncles fought for Britain. Was 14 at the time of Queen Elizabeth's Coronation. It was adeptly exciting time.

I also am 80 and we were living in South Africa when the Queen was crowned. Our school was taken to the cinema (a very grand place in those days) to see the Coronation film when it came out. It was wonderful and unforgettable.

I remember reading (several times) that Queen Elizabeth publicly acknowledged how much & how often Mr Churchill helped her & guided her in her very early days as Queen. 💖
Wonderful stuff! A thousand years…proves that the people from all,backgrounds love the monarchy and in a time of trouble they are a beacon of light. Take that away and the Brits have nothing but a bunch of politicians arguing over who is going to be the boss when not one can do the job.

Wonderful interview. I so admire Soames for his delineation, and admiration, of the tradition which the Coronation will express. Our world needs touchstones, and the British Monarchy is one, a good one. Clear membership in a tradition, in a culture, in a system of government that simply tries to do its best, is a gift and an example to the whole world. Maybe Parliament is in a fog, but the British Royal Family is not. Best of luck to Charles from an American who loves Great Britain from afar, every day.

Very poignant and acute observation. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Every system has its problems and imperfections, but I can't think of another where the enduring principle throughout a lifetime is to do right by others on their behalf. And it was correct for Charles to have pointed out that the barracks in Hong Kong were not good enough for our serving soldiers. If he cannot defend them, who can?

@@ellensheilaapkarian1420 did it really? My parents lived through WWll and were both in the forces. They despised Churchill. In fact my mother, who grew up in Stepney and as a child overheard the chat of her mother's friends, many of whom worked 'below stairs' in the palaces and large houses, grew up to consider the upper classes to be, on the whole, unworthy of respect. Phrases such as " they have the morals of rabbits" meant little to her at 13 but were understood later.
A 75 year old man is often more like a 50 year old man of 2 decades ago.KC has health & longevity in his family. His parents lived well into their 90's and his grandmother lived to be over 100. We have every reason to expect KC to have a long, fruitful reign.

This generation will be sorely missed when they are gone. Well spoken and the ability to have a conversation without talking over people, babbling, or umm-ing and ahh-ing. He also LISTENS too, and gives considered replies. So many times now people do not actively LISTEN in a conversation, they are simply waiting for their turn to speak. I'm so sick of being talked AT by people, instead of having an actual conversation with them.
What a civilised conversation, with concluding remarks on loyalty towards one's friends - whether it is to a king or a commoner.

So much that is held by the Royal Family is held in trust. If that was dispearsed very few would be better off.
Apart from private homes/apartments, much is public access.
Prince Philip made a lot more of the properties no longer run at a loss.
If the family did step down, their private money would be theirs, just like any other billionaire.
You would have a much better case to attack those like the Duke of Westminsters, who set up their huge estates to be a trust, to have the use of everything, but not own it, and to pay little in death duties or income tax.
There should be a law that trusts must pay a MINIMUM of 3% of the total value of the trust, whether or not the trust makes a profit.
So there is no way they can be multi millionaires/billionaires and not pay any tax.
Same for big companies. No matter what they do to officially run at a loss, they still pay 3% of their official holdings.
That would fix the NHS woes with a handful of billionaires. And as for the Brit billionaires who live in tax exile countries, they pay 10% a year on everything held in UK. Taken out before they can remove profits overseas. If all countries do that, the world would be in a far better state. There would be nowhere to hide.

His great uncle died training to be a pilot in WWII, and his paternal grandfather went up the beach on D-Day, only survivor of his unit, the memory of that war & it's heros lives in my family front and center even today.

This interview with Lord Soames is very eloquent and educational. It is not rushed and I hope many people will take the time to watch it. The fact that he is a friend of King Charles is helpful as he knows how much the King cares about many important issues such as the Environment, The Prince's Trust and the conditions for the Military among many. It was a very informative and articulate presentation. I agree with how upsetting it must have been for Prince Harry to cause stress and hurt to his father. I hope Prince Harry apologizes.
Please you guys are blind, haveing a king that betray his previous wife, did not care about his sons or their impact of his inmoral actions that as man should be responsible first and foremost and how "queen" Camila now is perfect, please , King Charles should apologize to Harry to have dismembered his family, mental health is caused by the parents, and Harris behavior is only the results of this disappointing royal family, shame !

And evidently you and other don’t get how much revenue comes to the country because of having them. 100 million is a huge layout yes but the expected 8 billion in revenue back into the country isn’t a bad return. Then you have people moaning about the designer dresses etc Bruce Oldfield jesse collett Alexander McQueen all British designers and don’t forget the hundreds of U.K. small businesses farmer florists and food producers. Oh and just in case you didn’t know the whole royal family costs you and I under the price of one cup of coffee a year in 2021-2022 it was £1.29, and they are patrons to around 3000 charity’s large and small local and international in the case of princess royal. We would lose more than we gain for not having them. You think not having then will equalise us it would be fairer life would be better we’ll think again there would still be the have and the have nots and the rich and the poor those that think they are better than us because that the nature of humans sadly. Personally I think my one coffee worth was well spent because at the end of the day for better or worse it promoted my country and was an amazing piece of living history and that brings in the tourists and business opportunities and that’s fine by me. Not bad either that he was an eco warrior before it was fashionable time has proved him right.

At KC's coronation today the majority of them looked away when Hazbeen looked at them and some pretended they didn't see him. Absolutely brilliant and hope he finally got the message that he's not respected. The coronation was incredible, classy and regal

There should be no classes, much as I am in favour of the monarchy. Social injustice still exists and it should have no place in the 21st century

Agree entirely. So sorry about reports of my homeland Canada and Australia not supporting the Crown. In Canada there has always been the Quebec element plus all the recent newcomers who care nothing of heritage. Lord Soames represents in every way what society once was. Sadly today there is little respect for institutions or one another. The Coronation was so deeply moving, food for the soul. Immediately there was screaming "no black on the balcony". Never mind how evident with all races and religions represented so well. Not only was there participation in the ceremony but so many invited guests.

Not only did the Queen attend the funeral , she had ordered it to be a " state funeral". Normally, only the monarch gets a
state funeral. This was a great honor to a great man.
The other non-monarch to get a state funeral was the Duke of Wellington in 1852.
Prince Philip did not have a state funeral and wouldnt have wanted the fuss anyway.
I watched the Coronation in its entirety from a foreign country, and must confess that, for all the majestic pomp and splendour, for which the British are renown, it was the choice of music that supremely impressed me. Knowing from this interview, that these were the personal choices of The King himself, speaks volumes about the innate character of the man. I pray God to Bless The King, The Queen, their families, the nation, and the Commonwealth. GOD SAVE THE KING PS. Imagine that we all could be and have friends the likes of Lord Nicholas Soames...

the BBC coverage was available on PBS. It can also be accessed on UA-cam either the full
7 hours or shorter versions. Only the BBC can cover Royal events properly. The American
coverage is awful. They should just stay home.
Although, Handel's "Zadok the Priest" is quite locked into the music of coronations, having been performed at every one since George II's Coronation in 1727. Charles could have dropped it, but the blowback would have been enormous.

i agree it is a wonderful interview...how lucky for the king to have such a friend...and to get a glimpse of a the churchill dynasty is quite frankly amazing...wonderfully amazing...tino pai! all the way from aotearoa(nz) to paraphrase taika waititi "the colonies" i shall be staying up and watching
he is not only amazing, but he is a kind of friends you would dream..
Especially if you belong to the working class and your 10 years old children as yourself work underground and go to bed hungry and miserable.

Charles broke Diana's heart, carrying on an affair before, during and after his marriage to Diana. The royals are emotionally dysfunctional , damaged, as are so many are in the English aristocracy and establishmant in general. The bizarre practice of sending their children away to boarding schools to be traumatised is disgusting. The damage done filters through society when you get people in high office due to who they know or what school they went to instead of whether they have an ounce of intelligence or talent.
The King has broken Harry's heart even if it goes both ways.

What’s happened between Harry and his family is something many of the English public can relate to personally. For King Charles III to have been deeply affected by his son in such a public manner can only instill a stronger bond within the realm.

We also need to remember how unpopular Queen Victoria was at times. She was going to be the last monarch too.
The behaviour and actions of the King will determine whether the Monarchy continues . It is up to the people , through their Parliament .

@@BlackStump172, but all proposed laws require the monarch's assent before in order to become law. That would include the abolition of the monarchy. Why would the King assent to his own abolition?

I've only watched a few minutes of this but NS is absolutely lovely. I'm a "blubberer" too; my goodness, when the heralds came out on the final Jubilee day last June and our beloved late Queen appeared in her green magnificence, there was such an emotion in my heart. It was her goodbye to us and most of us watching on TV - or there in the crowd, or on the balcony - were aware of that. The concerned look the then Duchess of Cornwall gave to her husband said it all. It was a hugely emotional moment in the nation's history. You could almost feel the ground shake. So Soames, who was so young at his grandfather's funeral - and which Prince Charles also attended in 1965 - has perhaps a deeper insight into it all; and an emotional connection to the mystical and historical connection than anyone outside of the immediate RF.
What a nice man. So lovely to hear him speaking so well of our King. A true friend
King Charles knows more about the life and understands the difficulties of the general public of this Country than all our Politicians put together. Long live Prince Charles ❤️❤️

One major thing that seems to always be overlooked at the time of interviews that I have seen is: the RF live in a fishbowl. All those houses (castles) they live in are not really theirs... a few of them are, but the rest are not. Just like the jewels... they are not theirs but the crowns. With great privilege comes great responsibility. I;m sure you are very much aware of that saying. It's more than a saying however. those people are so busy... I wouldn't want to do all that they do. I have my life to live. They give their lives to the role of monarchy and for that they live in grand houses and wear fine clothes. Is it worth it I wonder....
