People became enlightened (see: Enlightenment in Europe), put religion on the backburner forever and started believing in humanism. Development in secular arts and science became the primary way of thinking. In the Subcontinent, in India and Pakstan, religion still shackles most people, irrespective of which religion is dominant. It's worse in India because Vedas don't mention the word god anywhere. Vedic principles are basically atheistic. But the people have evolved backwards in murti puja and other evils. I'm an Indian, just to be clear.

@V G I have to say that at least Nehru and his group wanted India to develop through sience and technology. That's why they created IIT & medical research institute like AIIMS, already in the 1950s. However, as a society, the way we think about women's rights, girls' education, freedom for women, for people who think differently, we're still backwards, less so than Pakstan but still, we have a long way to go. In the Subcontinent, we took all the wrong ideas and laws from the British & have never set ourselves free from them. If we change the way we think, we won't have to go & live in the "West" & always be the immigrants/foreigners there. If we change the way we think, we can develop our countries here.

Its a wrong notion that religions is obstacle for progress. This could be true in case of Biblical societies (Papaiat or Church culture). but the concept in Islamic culture is altogether different. Islam in fact is not a religion in its strictest sense, it is a whole philosophy of life which provides guide lines for establishing a just society which is the ultimate goal of every civilized society.
Islam is called AL-Deen, which means a true path or way of life. It defines the parameters or moral code that encompasses entire spectrum of life and is not only the set of rituals which is generally understood. The latter is in fact a preparatory exercise which prepares a person to follow Islamic way of life. Otherwise the moral guide lines are almost equally shared in all religions, eg Allah says" we have given thee a meezan (balance) or justice to all which should never be over stepped" . An all pervasive just system is the hall mark of all progressive societies but Islam goes a step ahead by calling the unjust system a grave sin. Similarly for all other violations of this universal code, Islam recommends a disciplinary action which stricly regulates the system.of governance and deliverance based on equitable distribution of resources.
So what is it that has rendered the Islamic Society as stagnant. The only reason is that they stopped innovative thinking. The verdict given here by Allah SWT is that "you will only get what you strive for". The Muslim Societies when they were striving for innovations, they were leading the world on land and seas and astronomy. They were charting the maps, measuring the earth and sea surfaces and depths, constructing dams and canals, and exploring the field of medicines, to increase the wealth necessary for healthy economy and uplift of humanity , In the field of social justice, a slave and master would sit together and eat together, there was no discrimination on.the basis of cast, colour or creed, whereas in.the western societies the human right issues came up only recently and still there are many societies where discriminatory laws are in vogue. On the other hand the Islamic models like Omer's law are being practised in many countries.
So the role of philosophers and thinkers in the wester world is essentially the same as in Islam that is to reform the society and prepare it for a proactive role for betterment of human beings. The difference is that whereas in western societies the people sprung up to bring in innovations which ultimately lead to advancement and rapid industrialisation and the revolutionary changes in thought and action, the Muslim societies only perceived idealism and no innovative action. The stagnancy in thought and action led to their exploitation by colonialist powers and even by their own feudalistic system.
Now if we consider for a moment that it was the thinkers and philosophers who revolutionised the Europe, shall we take it that they were also responsible for perpetuating colonial rule over backward and less developed nations. Does the real.Islam or even Christianity ever allows subjugation of the weaker nations with barrel of gun. If this is the end result, then I think, in terms of impassionate analysis, Muslim societies are much better of without these kind of thinkers and philosophers which Europe produced.
