Tony & Chelsea Northrup does any of these support the Canon GP-E2 GPS? I bought one for my 5Ds and discovered it also works with my 80D.

The dreaded first camera decision. These cameras were new when I bought my first camera. I ended up narrowing it to the 77D and the Nikon D7200. I wanted the top LCD and full frame was too expensive. I liked the swivel touchscreen, UI of the LCD display, AF, and most importantly the ergonomics far better than Nikon. But the sturdier construction, weather sealing, pentaprism, better battery life, and most importantly extra SD slot sold me on the Nikon. Though, I wasn't really satisfied with the purchase for months due to me being attached to the Canon and being pressured by my Nikon owning friends.
I found out I hated liveview on the LCD. And on a recent trip to Japan, I never desired to use anything other than the viewfinder. And as I used the camera more, I got pretty comfortable with the camera ergonomics. And since I mostly did still photographs of landscapes and such, I had no issues with the AF. Personally, I don't regret my decision, especially since I only had to change out the battery once in 2 weeks with about 2000 shots taken. In fact, I prefer the D7200 to the D7500 (which a friend got for the trip to upgrade his old D80).
I have the canon 77d and have had it for a few months. I'm 13 and into wildlife photography and for me, the 77d was a clear winner. I use it around 3 hours a day and 12 hours on the weekends, all my spare time goes into wildlife photography and filmmaking. If you are going to spend a lot of time using a camera for wildlife I would definitely say the 77d is great!
P.s I saw the first fox cub of the year today!!!

Glad to hear that 77D is getting it's worth! Shoot everything, and shoot often. After all, taking photos is the most important part of being a photographer, you know? It seems like so many people forget that 10K in gear on the shelf is pretty useless by comparison to 1K in gear with 10K in photos. If you have place we can see you work, I would like to.
Keep it up. That dedication may make you quite the name in the industry some day. Also, congrats on your foxies!
Kevin Diaz I'm actually in the process of organising everything to set myself up, e.g. a website and an informal wildlife series! I have not been active on my social medias such as instagram and youtube, but once I am active again you can see lots of the wildlife pictures I've been taking! I have not got the best pictures of the fox yet, but hopefully with persistence I will!
The fox is getting used to me and comes just over three metres away from me and I'm so happy that she trusted me with her cub in the field - she was fully aware that I was there!

I think by now I've seen almost all of the most relevant videos comparing the sl2 with the t7i. This was quick but straight to the point. Very good.
🙋 Bought the 77D in May 2017 (as an upgrade to my 500D/T1i from 2009) and I'm pretty happy with it - a compact body filled with Hi-Tech-Features.
I'm giving this a thumbs up simply becasue it is a youtube photography video that isn't about Sony for a change. I can't even imagine the troll comments you are going to get from it. I'm trying to fight the urge to look, but it's like a car wreck, you can't help but to look.
I'm glad for Sony users, they are really changing the game. But man, they are quickly becoming the most annoying group out there. Overly concentrated on specs alone, and no one wants to talk about any other aspect of the game. There is so much more to making a great photo than dynamic range; the specs matter less and less with each generation of camera, and not everyone wants to spend 2K on a camera that doesn't have it's own native affordable lens options. A beginner can grab the SL2 or T7i, the 50mm F1.8, the 55-250mm IS STM, the 10-18mm IS STM, and the 24mm F2.8. With that kit they can take a wide range of great photos, and not even clear 1500 USD. For a great many shooters that kit would be all they ever need. This is why Canon is still top market shareholder, because they know that not everyone needs to be the next Ansel Adams, David LaChapelle, or Annie Leibovitz, or even Tony/Chelsea Northrup for that matter (love your work). Some people jsut want something that will work well for the money they paid, and any of those cameras can do that. Just about any modern camera can.

Today, I was out with my 80D and its kit lens. Another time, it will be a 5Ds and shifty lenses.

Bing Zhao there is some truth there, my 5Ds and six lenses I bought for it I bought used, for half or less of the new prices. Clearly, I stand to lose less by depreciation than the previous owners.

Got a SL2/D200 as my first DSLR camera. I am happy. :-)
That is the camera I suggest more than any other as a first DSLR. Good features, a guided menu, simple enough to learn on but will still be relevant after the basics are mastered. Also, if video is ever something you might want to do it kills the T6/T7 bas models. They don't have DPAF or silent STM focus support, the SL2 does.
Thanks for the advice. Can you test the JPG only buffering that Tony spoke about? I really want this as an upgrade to my ooooold 350D I got as a first camera....
If you shoot jpeg instead of raw, the buffer will hold out longer. I don't have one in hand to do a test, but according to some research you should be able to get 20+ shots before the buffer fills out if using a fast enough memory card. That is just under 3 seconds. Not terrible, but still not the beast the 80D is for action. If you will be shooting a lot of burst shots, then the SL2 might be too weak. If it is only sometimes, and you are ok with JPEG, you can make it work.
@Ramon Scheepers I just tested with my SL2 and I stopped shooting after 60 shots of no buffering. I imagine it could have gone on for quite a while. This was with the largest jpeg size available( L 24MB 6000X4000)

I bought a T7i a little over a year ago and have been pleased with it. I needed a backup and second video camera so I bought the 77D a couple of months ago. I do like the extra features of the 77D. Interestingly, the 77D was $50 cheaper than the T7i when I bought it on Amazon. The price on the 77D has since gone back up to $100 more than the T7i. For once, I guess I bought it at just the right time.
This was the most genuine and detailed difference review i have seen....helped me a lot
I bought the SL2/200D specifically for making videos with the Yelangu S60T steadicam stabiliser (~USD$50) and the combination does a great job. I also own the 80D for wildlife photography. The SL2/200D is even more portable.

Got the 200d as a backup and not a fan of the menu...really!! Prefer the old menu style, but I am sure that I will get used to it. It is an absolute bargain for what you get, even if it feels a bit plastic and the buttons are spongy, still a great camera.. Paid soooo much for my old 450D many years ago and now you get a lot of value with the new models and so light and small... brilliant for a beginner or even a backup camera, but I have seen some excellent images from this camera.. 5 stars for this video, I looked at some comparison charts for entry level cameras, but this video explains it way better....
Hey brotha, just wanted to let you know you can still get the old menu look on the SL2, just go into the 4th tab in the menu and you should see the option to use the classic style menu instead of the hand holdy graphic menu.
Basically one can't buy a bad camera today, but I think the comparison between these three specially shows how Canon lost it's Mojo because of intentionally crippling their cameras due to their weird product policy/strategy.

I take my canon sl2 camera with me when I go hiking (very light weight) and going on road trips to capture beautiful scenery and capture moments I spend with my family and friends. The camera is so easy to use and there is nothing that I can find that is bad about the camera

@@shireenniloofar9027 Honestly, it's pretty darn good! You can set it on Auto mode and it does the job. You can also adjust it your self by switching the setting to Manual mode. What are you using the camera for?
Rachel510126 not anything professional. I’ve always loved taking pictures.. and I study in Chengdu, China which is a beautiful place. I wanted to take some good pictures of friends and the place. What about the battery tho? I saw another video where they said it can take only 400 pictures at a time?
Nice comparison. I was using a 77D that I bumbled upon at a pawn shop as my primary camera for my online sales business. I had it on a tripod and used live view with touch shutter for all of my shots. It was great. WiFi worked great and allowed me to not have a cord between the camera and my computer. Video worked great for product videos. I thought I was "wasting" the 77D, though, as it had so many nice features that I didn't use. I then bumbled upon an SL2 at a pawn shop and grabbed that for my online business. Perfect! WiFi is just as good or better, and since I don't care about the viewfinder since I use Live View, and I don't care about the missing dial on the back since I just use aperture priority and a small aperture to get good depth of field on my product, the SL2 does everything I need. Video is just as good. Now my 77D will become my vacation camera, bumping off an old SL1. The 77D has a nice viewfinder and I will make good use of the features I didn't use when it was on a tripod in my studio setup. I also have a spare battery since I have a battery-eliminator power supply for the SL2 that sits on a tripod, and the battery that came with it will go on vacation with me and the 77D.
Great Video Tony as always, one thing worth mentioning the 77d has digital image stabilization (not sure if the t7i does as well) but its been useful when shooting hand held video.
Sam Vargas images the T7i has got EIS/DIS as well!

After a year I'm very satisfaced with the 77
I love my SL2. I did get it to learn how to do DSLR video. But I did do some maternity photos of a family having a baby. The 5 fps was fine for that. Was able to capture some great shots, even tho thier young son didn't want to sit still. Anyway, I love the SL2. Wish Canon would come out with a camera tho, that would blow consumers away. Seems that they got too many in thier line that are similar. My favorite camera's right now...(even tho I can't afford them) Canon 1dx markii, and the Nikon D850. Dream cameras for me. Thanks for the vid. You two are great.
I would personally take a 5DSR over the 1DX mkII right now. Not that it isn't still great, I think other than it's high speed shooting and 4K video (and weatherproofing), the 5DSR is just a better system. One of the sharpest cameras out there. The D850 is sweet too, and in a world where things are starting to look more and more like mirrorless will take over, it might be the last truly great DSLR.

Really great summery of my favorite cameras. Awesome sound quality and great lighting. Consistent voice cadence was pleasant. Appreciated the lack of stuttering. Clear consistent points addressed in a timely fashion. I bought my wife the Canon EOS SL1. We are very pleased with it and intend on buying the Canon EOS SL2 for myself. I'm trying to decide what camera to get my girlfriend for Christmas. I'm torn between the SL2 & the T7i. The price difference is about $320 Canadian, so it's not exactly a small difference. This will be her first camera, so I know the SL2 is a good entry option but would it last her long enough before she out grows it? Also concerned about the SL2 ability to shoot things in motion and also in low light. Any input? Current prices for me: SL2: $580 / T7i: $899 - all in CDN
it's definitely the SL2. buy some cheap lenses like the 50mm 1.8 along with it from the leftover money you got, and the 10-18mm if you can find used ones. you'd buy her the fun of learning the situations and circumstances, uses of changing lenses. this is how i got my interest in photography, years ago. and ended up making a living from of it.
I bought the T7i before the SL2 was released and have been happy with it. For me, the 77D upgrades were too minor. Don’t care about top LCD when I have the fantastic color screen on back with the same info. And exposure comp on the T7i is easy enough, as Tony demonstrated. Bizarre, though: Tony’s links show the 77D body is actually $100 cheaper on Amazon (U.S.), at least at the time I’m writing this. In that case, I would get the 77D.
Just to add that using live view you end up having a ton more metering zones and 80% of the sensor size is used as AF coverage area (which is a lot for action). Also, with a smartphone and Canon's camera connect app you don't need a remote trigger. Faced this dilema and ended up buying an SL2 with a 24mm pancake and I'm happy with what I'm achieving.
Just get the 77D.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. I know Tony did the break down already, but I feel it is much simpler. For video only, the SL2, and unless you need to shoot action the SL2 for stills. If shooting action more often or you jsut really want the 45 AF points the T7i, unless shooting in manual then the 77D for the added scroll wheel (but really at that point I would suggest looking for a good deal on the 80D instead for the added controls). They will all do good and are not that different in price. Though even the SL2 is above the budget of most people that ask me "what's a good camera for X dollars." X almost always is equal to or less than 500 USD. It's why I suggest the SL2 over the others so much, I know that price sells more than features to people that have never even used a camera before. That market is so much bigger than those that are sticking with it and upgrading for better features, and it's a lot easier to convince them to spend another 100 bucks for a better camera that will hold up longer than the base models.

I’ve often wondered why Canon doesn’t base it’s full frame mirrorless on the 200d body shape. It’s compact and has the right flange distance so EF lenses will mount to it. Give it a full frame sensor, magnesium body and EVF, some weather sealing, a couple of extra dials etc and you could end up with a pretty decent setup.
Shane Doyle a mirrorless without proper short flange distance is a waste. A 50mm 0.95, manual focus only though, exists for mirrorless and its under1000bucks. ...if this was doable for dslr they would have done it, but no. Theres more like that, 9mm 2.8 apsc, Samyang 12mm f2 and some more
Having a catalog of a couple of hundred compatible lenses immediately available would probably ease the pain of the wasted extra 26mm over the Sony E-mount.
Shane Doyle no. I dont need couple hundred lenses. None of those is a 12mm f2 you know? Also no 10mm fullframe. 50mm 0.95 you can afford. Emount has most Kind of lenses youd want.
I'm a Sony shooter myself so anything Canon puts out is unlikely to change that.
However, Canon have a squillion users out there that use the EF mount. If they go for something different there is a chance their customers will take the opportunity and jump systems as they will need new lenses anyway. Why risk that? The Canon SL2 (D200) is almost the exact same size as an A7iii, it takes EF lenses, it will hold a respectable size battery and it's a shape that current users are familiar with.

My SL2 is my first DSLR, and it's freaking awesome. it's true that the OVF is kinda primitive, but if you can focus and recompose you can easily get away with it. And the buffer running out only happens when shooting RAW, you only get those 5 frames, but if you are happy with the JPEG files straight outta camera you can shoot JPEGs and get tons of shots, I'm not sure how many cz I have never held the shutter for more than 5 seconds but you'll be just fine. This is not an action camera, as tony clearly said, but you can get amazing results with the Live View mode, autofocus is crazy good and composition wise it's awesome. You can get very creative with all the modes and functionalities of this tiny beast camera. it's awesome for video as well. This camera has everything if you're just getting started, awesome sensor, great capabilities, long-lasting battery, super user-friendly. What else can you ask for?

Great review! I have 5D4 but I also bought a SL2 for long hikes and travels. It makes a great pair with 10-18mm lens. I also like to pair it with the small pancake lens like 24mm, 40mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8.
SL2 is a very useful little camera. I suggest it to first timers since I know it will take far longer to outgrow it than it will a T6/T7 base model. I always say "simple enough to learn on, but enough features to keep it useful long after you mastered the basics".

As much as I'm a fan of mirrorless offerings from Sony and Fuji, for the price, having a flip out screen is fantastic. Even if the specs aren't all that...
I'm a street photographer. When I'm out and about taking pictures, I rarely use my full frame cameras. Most of the time I'm walking around with my SL2 and an EF 24-70L f/4 and a nifty-fifty. Why? It's lighter and it's the only one that has the DIGIC 7 processor that has the same sensor used by the 80D and a dynamic range greater than the 6DII.

A nice summation on this range of Canon cameras. I do have an unrelated question though: why haven't you guys reviewed the Pentax KP? Did I miss it? I thought about it because I didn't see the camera in your tutorial section. I thought it was kind of weird.
You can get a 77D body cheaper than a T7i body. Apparently no one wanted to pay the extra money and most of these are probably going out the door as kits. For what it's worth I have a 77D. I like it, but there are a few things I wish it had such as AFMA and focus tracking adjustments as well. Weather sealing is nice but I can live with that risk for now. When the 90D or 7D mkIII shows up I'll probably upgrade.
Is there a way to prevent the buffer? Or at least minimize the buffer time?
The SL2 has bulb shutter and time-lapse too, and a dial on the top directly tied to shutter speed...

Do you have a current camera? If so, is there something it can't do that the T7i can? If you don't have one, and you have the money, the T7i is a great place to start. I usually advise the SL2 for a first time DSLR myself, as it is a simple camera with good specs that will be easy to learn, but still good after the basics are mastered and cost less. The T7i has some advantages though, mainly that 45pt AF system. That was a bg part of why I got the 80D two years ago.
Otherwise, if you have a camera now and you have not invested in lenses, then I would suggest putting your money there instead. A new camera might add some features, but a lens will add new dimensions to your shooting.

Well, I would say my first advice stands. I think the SL2 is a very good first timer camera, but if you have the money for a T7i it isn't a bad choice either. Canon makes solid entry level cameras and has inexpensive but otherwise good options for lenses to back them up. What is it about the T7i that attracts you to it? Is it the AF system? It's pretty tight, same one my 80D uses. I do wish it was a bit more to the edges, but I don't have a lot of issues getting my focus where I want it.

It's a big step up from the 9pt that the SL2 and previous models had. For the most part, the SL2 biggest drawback is the 9 pt AF. They should have at least given the 19pt system that they used on the 70D. I think a lot of AF systems are about to evolve though. As the mirrorless world gets bigger, and EVF takes over, we are going to see more robust AF systems even on the lower level cameras. I think we are a ways from mirrorless outright replacing the entry level DSLR though. Cost will be the prohibiting factor for a while there. At some point though, once they are the same price or close enough, then we will see it happen. Years away at the entry level. Maybe not so at the mid-high level. A7III is changing that game.
Another camera that might interest you, on that same note, the M50. It's a mirrorless that compares to the 80D for some of it's specs. It even has 4K, though it is crippled for anything you might use it for. As a stills camera though, it looks pretty good, and has an EVF with even more AF points as well as eye detect. It's expensive though, 900 for the one with a lens, and 200 for an adaptor that will allow EF and EF-S lenses to be used on it (a must for any real lens selection). So, the T7i is probably still a better bet for the money. Just putting that info out there.

I'm probably going to buy the SL2 soon as my first DSLR. I do plan on using the viewfinder and this video is the first time I've heard that it kinda sucks. I don't have more money to spend tho so I'll probably just have to deal with it. It shouldn't matter for filming tho would it?
Omer Magen probably not, since filming is mostly done using live view.
Adam Rasmussen its a great camera as long as you don’t do sports/wildlife shots. I have 5D4 but I still use SL2 a lot for my casual shots.

Question: I’m looking at getting the T7i or the older full frame 5D markI. The 5D I can get for $300-400 and a kit T7I is $800 give or take. I don’t really care about video although I guess it’s nice to have. I’d rather spend the money saved on lenses. Maybe someday I’d like to upgrade to a better full frame camera. What are your thoughts as far as a comparison between the two and having lenses that will work for future camera purchases. Do these two use different lenses and will these lenses work on a newer full frame camera? Thanks for all of your input.
You missed the main point for not getting the 200D: the lack of focus points when compared to the others.

How would you say the SL2 stacks up against an older camera like the T5i? Isn't it basically a T5i with slightly better quality and dual pixel auto focus? I'm considering upgrading, and I'm thinking that I'd be totally fine with it. I love my T5i, the only thing I really want is Dual Pixel AF to be honest.
As others have said, although this vid doesn't apply to me at all (nikon shooter for 15 years haha) I enjoyed seeing something about entry level slrs again.
Advanced users understand the potential benefit of milc, but first time buyers still feel drawn to slrs, so there is nothing wrong with letting them make an informed decision.
If I had to criticise this video, I would argue it would have been nice to have an argument about what sets the canons apart from the competition. I am not talking in depth pro/con. A nod to canon's excellent and ultimately affordable (new or used) lens line up for example. This also applies to nikon ofc, but let's face it. At entry level there is nothing to seperate CaNikon, and when you hit the point of upgrading to a level where the differences matter the game may have changed a lot....
I have been pointing out to people lately the the "2000" dollar A7III is a lot more expensive once you look into lenses for it. Sony really lacks affordable lens options, and it doesn't look like that will change soon (I do think it will though, it just takes time to engineer lenses). At the moment, Canon is the most affordable option, and their cameras still take great photos. In the hands of a novice they won't see the difference in IQ, but they most certainly will see the difference in price. I still suggest the SL2 as a first time buyer DSLR, since I know that I can recommend a lens set that over time can be collected, and bring them a lot of value as well as depth, for a total price that is under 1300 bucks including the camera's cost. Might not be L glass, but it will get the job done for most people that are at that level. A lot of them might not even move past that level.

My 200D is not that slow when shooting raw files continuously. Maybe that's because you have only 40MB/s which is kinda slow, I have 80

Have a quick question about vlogging with SL2/200D. I hear that most DSLRs stop recording after 10 minutes once the SD card creates a 4GB file. I want to know if I am shooting a video (in 1080p) longer than 10 minutes, can SL2/200D auto-create the 4 GB files? I know that GoPro does that. Thanks in advance.
Anybody care to give me advice. Have been rocking the 600D since 2013, have a lot of lenses for that system already so I'm looking for an upgrade in APS-C canon lens. Is the 80D worth the extra money over the 77D if I don't need the headphone jack or better battery life?

Hey all/Tony, I picked up the SL2 on amazon for an African safari trip I have in 3 weeks, but after further research think the Nikon 5600 may be a better purchase for this trip. Thoughts? Open to opinions. Seems the 39 focal points and the low light range on the Nikon will make it a better choice? Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide some feedback-
I wouldn’t even bother with any of these old bodies. The M50 mirrorless is at a good deal now for under 700. I’ve actually been using mine more than my A7RII. Touch screen and focusing is great. Super easy camera to use.
If anyone uses Live View most of the time, then a mirrorless is for you.

The only difference will be the size and controls. The 77D has the best controls of them all but is also the biggest.

I would recommend the 77d Body + 50mm 1.8 prime if with nature you mean something that´s actually moving and means a problem for the 9 focus points on the 200D. If not, i would recommend the 200D. Also, i would not use 4k video on a phone, just saying.
I bought a sl2 but took it back because the video footage looked exactly like my t3i . I did not see any difference in quality from photos to video . I use manual focus only because I have full control over video and get perfect footage .
