THIS STORY:
In 1966, 7-year old Ruth Ann Miller was playing around the abandoned No. 4 shaft of the Tamarack Mine in Calumet, Michigan. Due to erosion around the cap, she inadvertently slipped under its cap and fell down a 4,000 foot deep vertical mine shaft. When rescuers attempted to remove the shaft's concrete cap to mount a rescue, the cap broke free and fell down the shaft. For 3 days the rescue effort persisted.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

I was a 10 yr old tomboy and we lived on a dead end road that led to a closed strip mine site. My oldest brother driving my dad's pickup and me on the open tailgate hauled the remains of our garden to an open mine shaft, when he backed up hitting a clump of dirt I was thrown from the tailgate into the open shaft! By the grace of God I fell onto a ledge about 8 feet down and just wide enough for my body, no broken bones but landed on broken glass and rusted metal. But I was alive! My brother was scared and freaked out , but went for my dad and they lowered a rope and pulled me out. Still have the scars and still remember the tetanus shot too! After that everyone around the area started filling in this shaft. They are everywhere and dangerous. Sad ending to this story for Ruth Ann Miller. R.I.P
Dang. So glad for that ledge that saved you! Absolutely terrifying
Luckily you fell in such a way, you landed on a ledge. Your poor brother, wow glad you are here to tell such a grand story.
That's wild. 😮
I'm in the UK and we've had a few mineshafts causing sinkholes in recent years as they don't seem to have been properly filled in after they were decommissioned.
Thank U 4 your survival story! God bless U & your family❣️ U WERE MEANT 4 A HIGHER PURPOSE ❣️ LUV ALWAYS 🤎
RIP Ruth Ann . So kind that you put flowers on the wreath. Thank you. ❤
Ruth Ann Miller, 50 years later | ABC 10 Web Feature They said her step-father maintained the grave/memorial. Seven years ago ABC 10 did a news video. Her step-father will have his ashes also there at the site to join Ruth, her mother and brother. At the time of the news video 7 yrs ago the step-father said he was 90. He didn't know who would continue to maintain the area after he was gone. I do hope someone has or will.
Her step-dad's/husband's love never wavered. God bless him and how he wants to be with his family.
Thank you for sharing this info. 😢
😢😢😢
Ron, you often present some very sad stories, but I have to say the level of artistry you incorporate into your videos is, especially for this little girl, a marvelous tribute. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. We are but dust, and to dust we shall all return.
I agree he always does even when he is telling stories about some evil people.
Agreed. He is a fabulous story teller and always remembers that there was a real person behind it and treats their story with the utmost sincerity and respect.
😢😢
Agreed.
It's still happening in 9/2007 a 13 drove and plunged her ATV into a 125ft mine shaft near Chloride AZ. The 13 year old didn't survive but her 10 year old sister did. They were found the next day. Dad was riding ahead of them they just disappeared. They said the brush hid the mine. They say there is over 100,000 abandoned mines just in Arizona alone. Thanks I enjoyed the story.
😢
Wow😔💔
Remember Baby Jessica? I think that was an abandoned well with a loose cover, though, iirc.
@@poempadgett4664I remember Jessica McClure. She wasn’t even two years old yet. I was 12 and terrified for her. We all were crying happy tears when she was rescued.
I remember when that happened.
I talked to the father once about a year after the incident. He almost died and was severely injured. I lived in Golden Valley near Chloride many years. I could have done the same on my ATV. Very dangerous areas in those mountains.
This tragic story almost mirrors a similar accident in my old hometown of Wigan, England in 1972. A 10 year boy called John Conway was with a couple of his friends playing next to an old uncapped coal mine shaft. They had climbed the wall surrounding the shaft, and John was standing on a wooden plank when he slipped and fell. His friends tried to grab him but it was too late. The shaft was 1200 feet deep, 800ft was water. Mines rescue teams from all over the country came to try and retrieve him. They sent divers into the water but the current pulling downwards was too strong. Pumps where brought over from Germany, but they pumped the mine shaft for 2 solid days and the water level never dropped. In the end they had to give up and John was never recovered. The shaft was then capped and the only sign anything was there now is a plaque with John's name on. Two heartbreaking stories, Rest In Peace Ruth Ann and John
Just such a tragic accident, I have no doubt that Ruth Anne’s loss had a profound and heartbreaking effect on her family being that her mother Ruth died at 53 and Gary around the same……all we can hope when she fell it was quick and she didn’t suffer…very much respect to the government who granted Ruth’s wish for her to be with her daughter and that Gary is to💐😢 rest in eternal peace the miller family🥺❤
P.S beautifully filmed and presented as always Ron❤️
What a heartbreaking story .You cannot imagine her mum's pain and her brother's.A lovely tribute to a little girl who was playing a simple game of hide and seek and it ended so tragically .
Thanks for the recap. Saved me 22 mins of my life. ❤
😂😂😂😅
@@adachic82what the hell dude
A very sad ending for little Ruth Ann Miller. Her poor mother lost her young daughter, what a heartache for her and the rest of the family.
and the little girl lost her life
Such a sad story 💔 poor little Ruth Ann. Thinking too of her family, her parents and brother, knowing she was down there 😢 I was so moved by the beautiful opening and closing music and scenes. As you always do, you told us the story with compassion. Thank you Ron ❤
A very sad story of Ruth Ann. Rest in the Arms of Jesus. God bless the family. Thank you Ron for this sad story of Ruth Ann Miller 🌻
Or buddha. Or shiva. Or literally any other. :p
Wonderful story telling tonight. Such a sad story, especially the part about her poor mother dying quite young and having her ashes spread at the mine.
A mother's love ❤️. 🎉
So tragic, and her poor mother, probably died from a broken heart. Your closing music is so fitting.
I was thinking of the very same thing.
That beginning and end of the video was so beautiful!!! RIP to Ruth, Mom, and brother. A tragedy that was so sad for everyone involved...
Thanks, Ron, for sharing this story with us!!😢🙏🏻
Oh no. I know if anyone can do this awful story justice it will be you Ron.❤️
Ron sure does a lot of these "awful stories!
In the most respectful way a sad story can be told!. Those mines should be filled in totally at the mining companies expense. Land fill is free or at least cheap.
My dad was a miner in the 80s in Northwestern Montana. It was scary then, I can't imagine back in the early days
Great respect for Ruth Ann story Ron .I was 4 years old living in Ann arbour Mi when this happened from one Michigan native to Michigan native RIP Ruth Ann 🪦 🪦
This one just breaks my heart. Thanks for remembering Ruth Ann, her mother, and brother. Thanks for sharing their story with us, Ron.
Oh, just ten days short of her birthday. This is one of the saddest stories yet, Ron. Brought to us with all the respect, honor and love you always give to the deceased. Thank you for letting us know about this. I hope the end came quickly for her. It comforts me that her mother is there with her. I'm in tears.
Great video Ron. You're correct about mines being a hazardous in the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan. I'm surprised that cap has lasted this long. Houghton County has brutal winters. They get about 202 inches of snow each year. First snowfall can be October and it can last until May sometimes. God Bless Ruth Ann, her mother and brother. May they rest in peace.
“The least I can do.” Sir thank you for honoring them w/ your words and bringing flowers to their graves.
There are so many open mine shafts in Death Valley, Nevada and CA. RIP to Ruth Ann.
Such a sad tragedy, thank you Ron for tell the story and remembering Ruth Ann Miller.
Born in Michigan, still here. Remember this story so so sad! Thank you for covering it and remembering her❤❤
Ron always make everything so beautiful when he tells a story. Even more beautiful and sweet when you leave those pretty yellow roses for those who are now resting in peace.
It's sad to see a little girl go out like that plus what her brother and parents had to go through
Just 10 days before her birthday that is so sad rest in peace baby girl.
Thank you for your kindness Ron . May the family souls rest peacefully sad story 💜💜💜🙏🏼
Thank You Ron for sharing this little girls story. 1966 was a terrible year for my mother she lost her Mother ( my Grandmother) , Mothers oldest sister ( my Aunt ) & my Sister. All within 2 months apart my poor Beautiful Mother. I Thank God He give my Mother the strength to push forward,I was still a baby. So sad for Ruth Ann’s family 🙏🏻
My goodness, Ron, such a sweet little child taken so quickly. A blink and she was gone. May little Ruth Ann Miller, her mother, and brother rest now together in peaceful slumbers. God has carried them Homeward. You always take my breath away as you weave these stories about those who once walked this earth. Thank you for sharing their lives with us so eloquently. They truly touch our hearts deeply. You do them well, Ron, as does your dedicated team of workers. God bless.

Such a horrific story, Ron, told in your usual empathetic and respectful manner! May Ruth Ann, her mother and brother all Rest In Peace and prayers for them and their family🙏🙏🙏😢😢😢 Thank you for posting this. The beginning and end of the story was really beautiful with the drone footage and music 🎶 Take care and safe travels 📷🍀💚
Ron if you're ever in Baltimore, you should consider going to Leakin park. So many tragic events have taken place there over the years. 80 bodies discovered, many more still missing in the park area. Just make sure if you do, you go with someone and during the day. Great work ❤
Sounds fascinating although I agree about safety in numbers. I've heard some scary stuff about Baltimore.
Please take someone with u if you go. Dan Bell also has a YT channel and have a few videos on Leakin Park. He says it's extremely dangerous.
A very sad story that needed to be told..You are always so respectful and serious with your commentaries..not goulish or dramatic..but the drone footage was just the right amount of scary/ deserted feeling..The mother and brother are there now to watch over her.A cautious tale of other horrors that lurk in the woods.
I was 9 going on 10 when this happened. We lived in MI at the time---Dearborn Heights. We saw the story on the news. I was crying, and hoping that she would be rescued. Such a devastating loss to her family. RIP Ruth Ann. (Jan Griffiths).
Such a sad story. Thank you Ron for sharing.
Wow Ron, those drone shots are amazing!
This story really tugged at my heart strings. That poor little girl and the worst part that they knew exactly Ruth Ann was but could nothing to retrieve her, sad and unfortunate that that mineshaft became her grave/final resting place no wonder so many people were affected by her accident, but she may truly rest in peace with her Mum now there with her. ❤❤
What a sad and tragic story, Ron. As usual, you have done a great job in telling us the story of what happened here to little Ruth. It's a consolation to know that the cremains of her mother and brother are also there where she lost her life. Both mom and brother died relatively young by today's standards. It wouldn't surprise me if Ruth's young and tragic death shortened both of their lives. The grief they lived with must have been very hard to endure. May they all rest in peace!
P.S. Looking forward to what you have in store for us for Halloween, Ron!!! 🎃👻🌚
So very sad I hope it was a quick ending for little Ruth 😢. My God her parents must have been out of their minds. Thank you Ron for the beautiful video ❤
RIP little Ruth Ann , you and your mom Rest In Peace . Ron you are a prince , giving this little girl such a beautiful tribute , remembering this little girl , horrible death but they tried getting her out, Ruth Ann you rest Angel your now asleep with the angels above , you rest to mom you lost your little girl I’m so very sorry , but now your together and at peace , thank you Ron for such a beautiful tribute , beautiful thank you Ron.
It is more likely copper poisoning that did them in. Too much copper from the mines leaching into the water.
What a horribly sad story. May this precious child rest in peace.
So sad😢. My son is an inspector for mines, scares me very much.
Thank you Ron for telling us this sad story. I think the Mum's life was shortened by grief, but it was very moving to see the memorial. It is obvious that this little girl is still not forgotten. RIP the Miller Family. Love the music you used btw.
i did to. fantastic choice
Beautiful little girl, very sad story.
As always Ron.....another amazing video!!
This was such a HEARTBREAKING story.....Ruth Ann was an innocent adorable sweet child, that was having a day of laughter & fun which unfortunately ended in complete tragedy 😢.... My heart seriously broke for her mother....it's one thing to know something horrible has happened to ur child, which is bad enough....but to never be able to locate ur child safely, or to not be able to actually retrieve their body for a last goodbye & proper burial has to be just so absolutely painful & heartbreaking.....no one should EVER have to go thru that.... ESPECIALLY a parent. Her memorial and tombstone in the location where she had passed is absolutely beautiful.... And honestly I'm so glad that they fulfilled her mother's dying wish to be placed with her daughter as well as her brother....This story is just so very saddening....but it's comforting to know that Ruth Ann is together once again with her mother and brother.....
Thank you Ron for telling her story and helping to keep her memory alive!!
**My thoughts heart and prayers go to Ruth Ann, her mother & her brother up in HEAVEN & to any/all remaining family members....
May they RIP 🙏🩷😢💜🙏
Thank you for sharing this. Your yellow roses made it more so special for Mom and Daughter.
Well done as always, Ron.
God bless you, Sir.

I love how you do theses so much. You show respect for every person, even the bad guys. I also love the beautiful flowers you give to certain graves and the research you do into each story. You have a great voice that makes it so easy to full asleep to that I can see the story in my head. I hope you keep this up for many more years.
A fitting tribute to this little girl, such a tragic story.
Thank you once again 🙏🇬🇧❤️
Yes I'm looking forward to this story to by you Ron. And you do it justice and tell it very well ....Mary from Arkansas ❤️
I grew up in a town just a few miles from Calumet and there is so much history in that place. I second another commenter's suggestion of looking into the Italian Hall disaster at some point. It was an incredibly tragic time for the miners and to this day, it's still unknown who actually caused it though there are several theories as to the culprit's identity. The Lakeview Cemetery not far from Calumet has many of the graves of those who lost their lives in the disaster and there is definitely a different feel to that part of the cemetery. It's very a very somber and sobering space to visit because you see gravestone after gravestone with the same date on it. Many of them have a lamb on top too, signifying the grave is that of a child.
I think over 100 people have suggested the Italian Hall disaster story over the last 3 years, maybe I will cover it some day. thanks. this story drew me there.
Ruth Ann was 5 years to the day older than me. We also share the same middle name. She should still be with us!! Rest in Peace!
How awful. Poor little darling! The thought of her suffering alone and frightened in the dark down there is truly terrible. Thank you for telling her story in the beautiful, engaging way that only you can, Ron x
So tragic of a accident. That poor little girl out playing and having fun and then that happens, how heart wrenching for the parents and the town. The memorial for her and her mom are so nice. That was such a nice thing to do. Thank you Ron for sharing this story, the music and video intro was nice. Looking forward to your next video.
This just up on my feed. Such a good video. Thanks for your efforts. Love from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks for covering this Ron. What a terrifying story.
Always makes me weep when it’s a child these stories are about. Outrageous that someone has to die before they get around to capping or sealing these pits. Costing the corporations too much , I imagine. R.I.P baby girl.❤
Thanks for this story loaded with sadness. Just feel like crying. I worked in the SA mines for 45 years and know the dangers of it all.. so so sad.
It's so nice that you put the roses side by side rather than separating them. You are very thoughtful. Thank you. RIP Ruth Ann, Mom Ruth, and brother, Gary
How very sad. ❤ goes out to the families that her brother had to live his life without his sister. They were innocent kids just playing. It's terrifying. Thank you for helping us all remember her Ron.
Poor little girl. God Bless her 💔
Good evening everyone, here is ⌚3am and looking forward to see this episode, Greetings from Malta 🇲🇹 Europe.
these stories are so sad. where i used to live a three year old fell into an open sewerage treatment. this was 1970s I knew the family. it’s something you never get over. rest in piece beautiful Ruth Ann.
Rarely do I cry at UA-cam videos, but this one hit home. Ruth Ann was my age. I lived in Escanaba (UP Michigan) in 65-66 and remember it well. She'd be 65 now....😢
Thank you dear Ron sharing heartbreaking story with us all!Rest in Peace Dear Ruth Ann and her dear Mother and brother!❤️💕🙏🙏🙏😇😇😇
It is very hard to fathom. It's such a very sad story. All mines should be capped securely. However, many coal mines in KY have never been capped. I'm sure there's many more out west, as well as the one's in Michigan. It's scary to think kids or explores get anywhere near open mines. I'm sure it happens daily, someone playing or exploring around these dangerous mines. Thankfully it doesn't happen frequently that you hear of someone getting injured or killed. One persons life is to much!
Thanks for bringing attention to this situation, Ron. A very sad story, told so well.
RIP Ruth 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Wow, this is very sad. Poor little girl, what a horrible fate. Rest in peace, Ruth Ann. 😞
Hey my home state!
Such a horrible sad story.❤
My late oldest brother used to work abroad the iron freighter ships for Ford Motor in the 1970’s.
He quit when the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost.😞
Thank you for doing a story in my favorite state..
I miss it!!
Spent my honeymoon in the UP in Oct 1999.
This is a sad, tragic story. Ron you have such a way of telling these stories. May the three of them rest in peace.😢 I'm happy that her mother & brother was able to be with her in death. Thank you Ron.
What a terrible, tragic thing to happen! Poor girl.
Very powerful video. Thank you for posting it. RIP little Ruth Ann Miler....
Love the way you tell a story. It's so sad, but interesting. Hugs and love from AZ.
You are so sweet Ron ❤ you have a beautiful heart.. you definitely are one of a kind.. you care about people and that's great .. you have the most kindest heart..❤ 😊 💞 your loved and appreciated by everyone.. love ever so kindly melody aka the lostgirl
Sounds about right! Here in rural, deep south, 1963 the boys in my neighborhood were exploring a field we had been in for years and a friend stepped on a brush covered area and a crack was heard, he jumped off just as an old rotted plywood sheet cracked and fell into a 30 foot deep dry well.
Filled with wood and junk he missed a very bad fall or death by inches.
We told our Dad's they all marched up there and looked then got the county to do something about it the well was plugged up and we got whipping's for being there.
I grew up in the UP and our family lived in Calumet. Our children, when they were in elementary school went to her grave site on a field trip. We met Ruth Ann's brother as he told the story. Very tragic indeed.
Hi 👋 everyone watching from Oklahoma. How is everyone tonight hi Ron how are you
i just love how you bring these stories to us, with so much respect and dignity. Thank you for all your hard work!
Alot of the mines were capped but i never let my boys who were young wander off in the woods.
There was no mention of her dad. Is he still alive? This is truly a very sad story. She was an adorable little girl. Rest in peace Ruth Ann Miller along with your mommy and brother. 😥😥😥
Very good but very important question, also. Is there any answer to that about Dad/Husband?
Yes, it would be interesting to find out what became of the dad.
Ruth Ann’s father John Claude “jack” Miller passed in 2011 I do believe there is living family still in the area.
good evening Ron... looking fwd and keeping my tab here
Rest In Peace Ruth Ann. Such a sad story, I can’t imagine that tragedy happening, thank you for telling her story Ron. Take care
Ron, I applaud your efforts to present this in a favorable light. To lose a child so young is terrible. Her mother must have been beside herself including her brother too. Thank you. ❤❤🙏🙏🕊🕊
Such a sad story 💔 you told the heartbreaking so well thank you Ron❤
Such a tragic and sad event. My heart goes out to the mother. I was born in 1967. I can only imagine many mother's hearing this story held their babies a little tighter.
One minute she's playing, the next minute she's gone. That's so sad. R.I.P. RUTH ANN & FAMILY.
Such a sad incident & so awful to have never actually found her. I do think that living with such a terrible sadness probably had a direct influence on the length of the lives of her loved ones. I believe that a similar incident occurred in our family many years ago, but it was a teenage boy who disappeared and his friend. They were never found.
What a sad story. Amazing fly over & oh the dramatic music, so gorgeous. Thanks Ron.
oh how sad poor little girl its lovely that the three of them are together but heartbreaking at the same time you put alot of emotion and warmth into these stories beautifull
Ron you are the greatest storyteller God bless you every where you go keeps a good worķ Ron
You are are a great story teller Ron. Thank you.
