Diddy Kong had an interesting small open world that was kind of like how you chose levels on Mario 64 and that was cool and how it gad planes, boats, hovercrafts, and carts! Idk of another racing game at the time that had a video variety. CTR had interesting story elements to it. And it was fun. I just feel like rip off gives then a bad name and he barely mentioned them.

Sonic and All-Stars racing transformed which I have on Wii u I still think is the greatest racing game ever made. The fact that your vehicle can transform and make the track different based on those transformations, not to mention the fact that on some tracks something changes on the track to make it so that you actually have a different race on each lap because you're required to transform is awesome!
Keep in mind that there was also Dreamworks Racing which featured EVERY SINGLE DREAMWORKS CHARACTER. You could race as Donkey, Shrek, even goddamn Toothless (which is actually really cool and a lot of fun). As far as I know, the game was released on the Xbox 360. I'm not sure if it ever saw a Wii or PlayStation 3 release.
The best Sonic Racing game I ever played was Sonic Riders. I think it came before Mario Kart 8 Deluxe I loved it for many years until MK8Deluxe came out. I still love Sonic Riders it's well made
