This insanity of the “grind” of 40 plus hour work weeks with only two days off is manmade. Even as kids, we had to go to school seven hours a day and had to even bring home homework. It was all designed to train our minds for the hamster wheel.

41 year old here, I went part time in February cause I'm beyond done working 40-60 hrs a week. I have no wife or kids and no debt of any kind with plenty of savings and a decent 401k. My parents was on my ass about the fact that you can’t retire…but you have to work…but that’s not a real retirement…smh. I just tell everyone I’m looking for a job, when in reality I’m not and I don’t want to for at least six months to a year. Hell I’m even looking at properties overseas and maybe planning to move and enjoy my damn life.

I'm in a similar situation as well except I left my job entirely and moved to another state. Then I was told by a property manager that she wouldn't be able to rent a house to me if I did not have a job even though I had enough cash to pay the lease in full. I told her I was voluntarily unemployed but had money, but it didn't make sense in her system. Which is ridiculous.

Seen too many people save, save, save for 'retirement' and either die shortly afterwards as they are worn out or get too ill to enjoy it! We are all being controlled by FEAR , from cradle to grave. Just watch the news and suck in all the FEAR to make you stay at home! Ask yourself why we never see 'good positive news' . Only today matters , do good things for people , that's more rewarding than money. A book I would recommend is 'your erroneous zones' by Wayne Dyer. Tim is right that work/life balance is bs ! I was "let go" in 2020 from a job where i felt depressed and overworked everyday. Happiest day of my life when that happened! Sometimes, when we feel stuck because fear is the driving factor, the universe gives us the kick in the pants we need to get moving. I am 63, have worked for myself and others over my lifetime, and i gotta say, you are right- work life balance is not real. The push out the door 2 years ago has woken me up to the fact that we have been programmed to be slaves to whoever is controlling this place where we all live-to those that take our hard earned money and do god knows with it. 🤔🙄When you say "no more i choose otherwise!!", the world literally opens up to you and your creative soul is released. Fear keeps most stuck and I get that for sure. Friends keep asking me if I found a job yet- they can't believe I'm doing great and have savings etc.. Truly detaching and getting "deprogrammed" is the prize. Thanks Tim!! I am so grateful to you for bringing up this subject to help others who are deserving to follow their own truths. much love,🙏🏼💜

I had two conversations this year, one was a close friend who would always complain about her job and her boss, another was a person who's job it is to get me a job, I saved gold and silver for a few years and pulled it in over the last few years, so I technically didn't have to work but I'd go to these appointments and one day their office stuffed me around big time, I went off my nut, because I just don't get pushed around now, if I'm in a job and conflict comes, I pack my stuff and literally walk straight out (did it twice last year) So I went into another appointment to cool things down and to be heard instead of ignored, in that conversation I asked the lady if she likes her job? We had a ten minute conversation about not having to put up with crap, she knew that's what I was all about.
Just this month both ladies have contacted me to say they took what I said on bored, and quit their jobs. Both were thanking me for 'our talks' one went onto another job, and the other realised she didn't even have to work for a period of time.
I think people fear change or if not change, would never dream of risking something that they have right now. Well change will come for you with or without you, but you'll be effected by it. We are programmed into work work work, debt debt debt. None of that fear is living your life, it's destroying it.

    Love this, Tim!!!!
People will always tell you what they should do based on their worldview, not yours. We have to live a life that is authentic to ourselves. Life is about living, not working. We should enjoy ourselves, and if that means doing something new, do it. Independent thinking is where it's at. Although I will say, whatever puts you into a flow state is what you should be doing for your job. Whatever gets you excited is what your career should be. We all have different gifts and voices, and there is room for us all in this world. It's not about working for the sake of working; it's about living an authentic life. We all need to do what we can to make our life enjoyable. The best lives bleed and blur between the other. Work does not have to be a grind. That's a life they tell us. I am rambling, but it all starts with showing up for yourself, not others. We should all be living our lives now. At 80 or 90, we don't want to sit on the porch and feel regret. Go live your lives the way you see fit. Be happy. Do your own thing. Share your voice. Live your life, not the cookie-cutter one that keeps you trapped.
I'll be honest. "They," if there is a "they." It is probably a system that doesn't want you to stop and think and ponder for yourself. "They" want you to stay busy and stressed. The more you can stay busy and distracted, the more you don't think about what matters internally and beyond. It's as if "they" are playing the old "don't look over there, look over here" game. The ones that break free from that path are the ones that find true freedom. I've always felt that so many things in life are meant to distract us from what matters to us as individuals. The system does not want us to question things. They want things taken at face value as truth. Go to school. Go to college. Get a job. Buy a house. Have a family. Compare yourselves to others on social media. Blah, blah, blah. Work-life balance is just another parlor trick that tries to take the focus away from the things that matter to us as individuals, so we don't step off the path and do something better for ourselves. It's all about stepping off that path and onto a new one. Like you are doing, the other path was full of people; it's up to us to find the true path for us. But note, if and when you do that, everyone will tell you not to do it. They will scare you into doing something different. That's just because they are afraid to do it themselves. Go do it!

The Great Resignation has been a breathe of fresh air for me. People used to think I was crazy to want to travel; wanting to pursue my passions. I watched my parents growing up, my dad worked as a manager and put in overtime all the time. He would get to work at 7am and not get home until 9 most nights. At a successful corporate office. He loves cars and he loves fixing them, but he views being a mechanic as shameful work, something that maybe he'd do as a hobby now and after retiring but never as a J.O.B. My parents' lives were nothing but work, work, work, never taking more than a few days vacation and then when they came home they always worked in the yard! Mowing or tending to their garden. It wasn't their passion but their obligation as wealthy landowners. To me, a life like that would be nothing short of a nightmare. There is so much of our society that needs to change for people to stop working as much as we do; automation of manual labor, a HUGE reduction in consumerism and every sector of our lives relating to it, and it all starts in the schools.

Get to a point where the necessities ( housing, utilities etc) are covered and stick to a budget. Once you get the ball rolling and start making progress you'll be amazed at how much extra cash you have every month. It's easy to live cheaply and have a good time doing it, if you have a plan.

Ever since I went down to working 3 days at my job instead of 5 days now I can see my family really regularly, I am working on an independent film, I’m writing my book, I get to spend time with my lady, I get to enjoy my life more, yeah the money is a little less but I refuse to trade my happiness for more money. Use your spare time to work on what makes you happier

See my issue is that I am a single mom and I need health insurance and my daughter needs it too. So I don't seem to have any choice but to work full time. I even have a second job. I can only "live" on the weekends. I am not sure how to get around that. We spend our weekends outside, hiking and swimming at our local river but it isn't enough. I resorted to bringing books to work so at least I can learn while I'm working.

The problem with "work/life balance" is that it assumes work and life are totally separate things. Work is a part of life. The whole phrase just sounds like an attempt at brainwashing you into believing that your life starts when you leave work for the day, and you're somehow not using up "life hours" when you're working.

I think a lot of the work/life balance was started because of burnout after 50 or 60 hours a week. I completely agree with you though. Thank you for this video. I've been watching through your entire channel while I'm working (ironically hahah) and I connect so much with your mindset!
I'm 20 years old and have been working since a week after I turned 16. Even graduated high school almost 2 years early so I could focus on college and starting my career, just because that was what everyone told me I needed to do!
Every teacher I had told me I needed to go to college, and not "waste my potential," and my parents told me to start working & saving full time the second I was out of school.
I started watching creators like you, and ended up not following any of their advice. I quit my "real" jobs at 18 years old, and started just doing artwork, something I've been passionate about since 1st grade, and doing the bare minimum to pay my rent & bills. Now I've been working from home, running my own graphic design business for 2 years. I don't work more than 10 hours a week. My parents are constantly panicking about it! They think I'm making the wrong decision & that some catastrophe is going to strike and ruin my life.
But, in reality, they're just conditioned to believe that if I'm not working under a boss for 40 hours a week and living a miserable life in my 20s, that I'll never make anything of myself.
I totally agree with you about bringing up the new generations to believe that work is just a part of life. I'm so grateful I realized it & found people like you that helped me wake up. I can only hope that the rest of my peers can come to these realizations as well. Thank you for this!!!

Buying a house is fine if you plan to stay in one place. Think of it not like throwing money away (i.e., renting), but putting money in the bank. Since we bought our house in 2010, it has more than doubled in value. After it is paid off, we will have a stable place to live that is also an appreciating asset, completely paid off. Want to live a nomadic lifestyle and rent your house out, letting someone else pay your mortgage? You can do that, too, especially with the crazy rental market we have now. Renting your house can be your main source of income if you are frugal enough. Not too bad.

I agree with you about working more the harder your job gets. I moved up from factory line work into quality control and I had to work more forced overtime.
A couple weeks ago, when I tried to quit my job and wash dishes part time, my Mom who I live with, was upset. She said I told her my next job would be better. Not a lowly dish washing job. I realized I'm going to have to move out eventually so I can do that without her negativity.
One more point to make: there's a book on how to get a job you love called "So Good They Can't Ignore You" by Cal Newport. In that book, he says that good jobs require you to have skills that are rare and valuable. And good jobs allow control, creativity, and impact. Most low wage, low skill jobs don't offer those things.

I was just laid off from my job earlier this week and I have been thinking a lot about how I make my career such a large part of my identity. I think especially as men we wrap up our worth in our income and job titles we hold. While I am being diligent in looking for new positions, this season of life will be a good reminder that my identity is not my job. There is so much more to life than working and chasing the almighty dollar.

I can’t even begin to describe how much this video resonates with me. I joined the great resignation (after 15 years in one company) just one week ago, and yep, everything you’ve said rings so, so true. My “work life balance” (or whatever balance I should have had in life) was a complete joke. I was getting snappy and irritated at my wife and kids, my health was suffering; I was working insane 12-14 hour work days (and some weekends) to get things done, my stress and blood pressure was through the roof - and to put it into perspective: I was going through all that for far less money than what our local garbage truck drivers or cleaners make.
I have been deceived for so long - it was all just to keep me locked and shackled in that chair, making money for The Man. (ie: “the management”).
Quitting was so hard to do and I dont’t really know whats next. But: I’m ok for now, and I’m *happy*. And that’s priceless to me.
I’m still relatively young - but I’m so glad I worked it out now, rather than in 20 years time.
