Anna Coleman Ladd was an American pioneering sculptor, educated in France, who devoted her time and skills throughout World War I to creating custom-made masks for disfigured soldiers to wear over their wounds. In this photograph, dated July 1918, she is seen in her studio, painting a mask worn by a French soldier who was disfigured in World War I.
