You can say what you like about Gareth, But for a guy that has overcome what he has, and be able to sing like that, he does not deserve any negativity. Remember Gareth had a very bad stammer, he over come it, and not only did he over come, he taught so many more to over come their impediment. I say well done young man, and keep on doing what you're doing, and the hell with the begrudgers. .
His breathing is because he has a stammer when he speaks . He is wonderful ! I am an avid fan of les mis and I see it often. Loved his performance and could feel the emotion. Crack on lad .... Spiffing! X
I only really got to know Les Mis after I had lived in New York and knew around 60-70 people who died of AIDS. For me Les Mis just portrayed all that despair, that fight against bad luck, the sheer joy of rejecting oppression, and the sorrow of loss. For me it is one of the most Christian stage events possible. But one song cripples me emotionally. I miss New York, but there are so many places there I could not go (Julius Bar for example) without this song kicking in.
OMG... he used to stammer? I think he is amazing and love watching his performance here. I don't know his beginnings but that is inspiring and deserves to be praised for a very great performance. His phrasing is impeccable.
This is the third version I've heard that I can remember anyway and I have loved all three nick did amazingly with the power in his voice Gareth has put the emotion in as well as the power but Eddie has put in emotion power and actually made me feel as though I was there on screen listening to him it makes me cry every time where as Gareth's and nicks doesn't make me cry
Part of it is because this version is edited for TV - if you've got all the lead up from the play as well that would add to it by the time he gets to singing this.
Michael Ball is my most favourite Marius but I never saw him live. The Marius that I fell in love with after seeing him do the role live is Adam Jacobs.
Say what the fuck you like, but that is one seriously improved voice I am loving the classical tone, credit where credit is due, I would listen to him sing anytime.
He had a very severe stammer go watch his audition for Britain's got talent or xfactor not sure which one, he could not speak two words consecutively, this guy is amazing :)
if one reads the music sheet of Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, the performer has to hit the high G in the word 'became' and continue the phrase in legato style 'the last communion'. And Gareth does this wonderfully. It bothers me when people don't understand the difficulty in singing this beautiful piece and would say Jonas sang it better. Jonas chopped it.
Can I ask why? I'm not trying to be rude, but I want to know from someone else's perspective. I understand that his voice isn't as matured or strong as other seasoned Broadway performers, but I always thought he was a talented performer who at least tried his best at the 25th anniversary concert. I believe he did Les Miserables justice, and his effort was admirable. But if you could share with me why you didn't like him, I would really appreciate it! Thanks! :)
love this version, why the fuck do people hate eddie redmaynes version? dont expect it to be the same, whats the point in making a movie if they're all the same style of voices, every Marius has a good voice in my opinion, Gareth, Michael, Eddie and nick are all good, leave them alone.!!!
I don't know why but when I think of this song in my head there's always a certain voice singing it... I've listened to a lot of versions but I just can't seem to find one that fits the voice that's in my head. It's weird.
@SuperFTD83 There's no doubt that Michael Ball is the one true Marius, but I don't think Gareth should try to emulate Ball, he should just be himself...it's good enough for me :)
very finely interpreted.... why did not do the 25th anniversary concert... Nick Jonas was terrible all that nasal sound... Gareth looks like a romantic lead too
Jonas lacked legato bigtime! Nice voice, in tune, but he couldn't increase his volume besides the likes of Lea Salonga, Ramin Karimloo, Alfie Boe. He chopped the big phrase 'Becaammme (a big gasp for air) their last communion...' a big major sin not to be commited by any actor playing Marius!
I know what you mean but come on! First of all Eddie Redmayne was acting like if it would happen like every film is, Nick Jonas maybe not the best Musical singers but he did a good job and atleast Gareth Gates makes his performances like the character like Eddie and Nick did so give them some credit
you can see, the emotions bursting. Good acter
The most emotional sounding version I've heard. Nice voice.
can't believe this incredible performance by gareth gates is a random clip from the alan titchmarsh show???
amazing and underrated

now this performance supprised me! The emotion and his vocal ability.... he's come along was since pop idol! good for you mr.gates
His diction and projection is AMAZING.
His breathing is because he has a stammer when he speaks . He is wonderful ! I am an avid fan of les mis and I see it often. Loved his performance and could feel the emotion. Crack on lad .... Spiffing! X
I swear 90,000 of these views are from me Gareth will be my favorite Marius always, he radiates such honest emotion it's amazing to watch
Tabitha G I love him as Marius too. 😊
Superb
wow he sang it beautifully and with so much emotion. =]

wow, such emotion. and his voice is so effortless.
So moving. Les Mis is simply the BEST musical by a mile. An incredible story with such amazing songs.
Fantastic, what a brilliant performance.Had tears in my eyes.
He is unbelievable!
Oh my friends, my friends, DON'T ASK ME!!! - most epic part!
I've been waiting to hear someone crack with emotion on "ask me". Thank you!
Gareth Gates you are the only one in my eyes.Love you
I am fascinated by all the different musical theatre performers who have brought this beautiful song to life! Gareth is excellent as well! Cheers :P
Really great face, voice. Bravo.
So much emotion...
i saw les mis in the west end... and he was brilliant.. it has to be said..
OMG... he used to stammer? I think he is amazing and love watching his performance here. I don't know his beginnings but that is inspiring and deserves to be praised for a very great performance. His phrasing is impeccable.

agree eddie's put emotion n power and also onion on my eyes
Nick... Jonas?
Amazing! I can feel it! Xx
Fantastic. 5 stars!
The best performance of Empty Chairs I've ever heard.
Absolutely amazing and brilliant performance. Don't find words to describe it and Gareth's amazing talent!
He is amazing, i was so blown away by him when I saw the tour
Your diction is fabulous xx
When I went, he wasn't on :( He sounds awesome! Craig Mather, the current Marius and Him are about as amazing as each over, so worth going to see!
well done gareth great job.
I love he's voice & performance wow!!! X
Undoubtedly my favorite Marius ever.
This was amazing, such a great song
Now that is a performance
Fabulous performance loved it.
AMAZING PERFORMANCE!!! :)
At first I wasn't sure about this, but now...DAMN that was sweet.
love it
I liked this. I really liked this
good performance
brilliant !!!! i'd go as far as to say the best marius ever !! there, i've said it !!!!
Part of it is because this version is edited for TV - if you've got all the lead up from the play as well that would add to it by the time he gets to singing this.
Wow ♡
A beautiful rendition, his voice is crystal clear BUT I don't see him in the other songs with Cossette.
This is good :)
His voice *fits* Marius very well!!
wow he is expressing Marius!
This just put a smile on my face hearing the purness of it. The message shouldnt make me smile tho lol.
It starts in A minor (No sharps no flats). Measure 41 it modulates to C# minor I believe.
Fantastic version. Check out Josh Grobin
Wow
Michael Ball is my most favourite Marius but I never saw him live. The Marius that I fell in love with after seeing him do the role live is Adam Jacobs.
@hnoel1987 I agree...never gonna get used to a tenor in this role, but I still agree...he's def the right age...
i love him as marius. I like how he sounds younger then michael ball and older then nick. He sounds like the age marius should be.
He sings with so much emotion its great :). I wish I could go and hear him in person. And he is waaaaaay better than nick jonas.
Say what the fuck you like, but that is one seriously improved voice I am loving the classical tone, credit where credit is due, I would listen to him sing anytime.
He had a very severe stammer go watch his audition for Britain's got talent or xfactor not sure which one, he could not speak two words consecutively, this guy is amazing :)
oh this is just great! He has matured since "Anyone of us". He is man now...;)
Gareth gates has done really well for him self look at him now
He is in character.. His characters friends are dead... Not over acting but in the butter one
Actually he means the O2 show, your talking about the 25th anniversary Tour that gareth was in.
:)
two different events
Saw the musical 7 years ago in Singapore, kinda sad that change the costume and a couple of the song lyrics were shortened!
1. Michael 2. Eddie 3. Gareth
its gotta always be micheal ball for me but this is a very close second!! the passion and the voice was better than the guy in the movie!! xx
He's got an amazing voice! But I agree with the two comments below me as well
if one reads the music sheet of Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, the performer has to hit the high G in the word 'became' and continue the phrase in legato style 'the last communion'. And Gareth does this wonderfully. It bothers me when people don't understand the difficulty in singing this beautiful piece and would say Jonas sang it better. Jonas chopped it.
Literally just uploaded my cover of this song :)
Shit the bed! Amazing.
@FallingUpStairsDPK
i've just heard it. It's really impressive. Great performance and voice but I think Gareth's performance is quite better.
Anyone know what key this is in?
probably a bit too emotional, but much better than I expected
Can I ask why? I'm not trying to be rude, but I want to know from someone else's perspective.
I understand that his voice isn't as matured or strong as other seasoned Broadway performers, but I always thought he was a talented performer who at least tried his best at the 25th anniversary concert. I believe he did Les Miserables justice, and his effort was admirable. But if you could share with me why you didn't like him, I would really appreciate it! Thanks! :)
@BenEdquist and you do it better? its a great emotional performance. certainly not bad. anyway i like the dutch performance most.
love this version, why the fuck do people hate eddie redmaynes version? dont expect it to be the same, whats the point in making a movie if they're all the same style of voices, every Marius has a good voice in my opinion, Gareth, Michael, Eddie and nick are all good, leave them alone.!!!
Most versions with Ball is from the 10th anniversary concert. That's 10 years AFTER Ball played Marius on stage. That's why he sounds too old.
I don't know why but when I think of this song in my head there's always a certain voice singing it... I've listened to a lot of versions but I just can't seem to find one that fits the voice that's in my head. It's weird.
Can't stop laughing.
*breathe *breathe *breathe *breathe *sing *breathe....
This guy needs to do a Tay Zonday.
The mic is picking up the breathing 😒
I don't feel like he has enough of a haunting and strong enough voice to play Marius.
@SuperFTD83 There's no doubt that Michael Ball is the one true Marius, but I don't think Gareth should try to emulate Ball, he should just be himself...it's good enough for me :)
Fuck yeaaaaah ;) Finally a good opinion :D
hmm interesting tone quality to his voice. Obviously better than Nick Jonas. I kind of wanted to shoot something when I saw That performance.. ahem
very finely interpreted.... why did not do the 25th anniversary concert... Nick Jonas was terrible all that nasal sound... Gareth looks like a romantic lead too
He has a great voice, I thought he was better than Will Young, better range, I VOTED U GARETH.
He has done better than Will now.
What are u talking about, the film version was better!! He managed to she'd a tear and keep his voice perfect!!
I know what you mean but come on! First of all Eddie Redmayne was acting like if it would happen like every film is, Nick Jonas maybe not the best Musical singers but he did a good job and atleast Gareth Gates makes his performances like the character like Eddie and Nick did so give them some credit
It isn't an octave lower , have another listen to Mishael Balls' version . And it's not a bad effort at all
Why do you think he's overacting? I'm genuinely curious.
I think he sings it too fast but its good
I LUV GARETH!!!
He should've done Les Mis instead of Jonas... But Jonas was... erm... okay-ish...
because the 25th concert was about popularity over talent -___-
I saw Gareth live at the West End and he really was amazing! But I have to agree his acting in this video is a bit questionable.
After the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, this song now has a different meaning.
Should have been him instead of Nick Jonas for the 25th anniversary concert.
I think you'll find it has the same meaning, but you;re interpreting it with your own experiances differently.
Yes, except for Jonas.. I'm in love with all but him
People probably don't like eddie's voice since he sings from his throat and sounds a bit like Kermit the Frog.
