Hi Lily, I live off grid in rural Nova Scotia with my boyfriend. We escaped the city (Halifax) during the Plandemic. We have solar , a wood stove & a gas generator for back up. NS Power had not invested in upgrading their grid so despite skyrocketing prices there are regular blackouts even in the city & power can be down for days. Rural areas sometimes weeks. I’m so thankful we aren’t reliant on the grid for heat and lights 🙏

I have the same thing going on in rural Newfoundland. I left to work at 17 but I am back now but I was raised on the land and sea. I forage fish and eat alot of moose. I have wind turbines also besides the solar panels. I use the generator to charge my 6 volt batteries if everything else fails. The ice storms and wind knock out the power alot.
Wow that's way too far North for me. I'm currently living on the Mediterranean coast of Spain near Castellón north of Valencia and hate the cold here, although during clear days it's quite warm in the afternoon. I wouldn't survive living where both you live.
Get a good large watt solar generator. If no sun, you can fully recharge from the gas generator in apx 2 hours. WAY less gas to recharge the solar then to run your household on the gas generator

I'm in the West of Ireland. We were without power for 6 days and nights. Luckily I had a small generator from when we built our home and I managed to get it working ro power phone and headlight chargers and to run lights and the freezer for a few hours. We cooked and boiled water over a fire brazier and we have a stove in our sitting room. We had a large tub of water for flushing toilets. It was a hard 6 days as I got a flu at work. It just made things harder.
Most of the power lines that were knocked happened as they passed through masses of industrially planted forests here in our area. We are blessed as we had been ready more or less to take care of ourselves but we have learned many lessons and intend to change things up. When the power goes you are really on your own.
You people have been in my prayers.
Get some 6 volt batteries and a inverter you can charge the batteries with a battery charger run off a small generator. You use less gas and turn off the generator once the batteries are charged. I remember Ireland being kinda windy like Newfoundland so maybe a wind turbine.My grandfather was from Wexford so I visited.

6 days isn't bad. A few days ago my area had an ice storm, & power was out for about 4 days. Every winter the power goes out for a few days here.. The worse for me was sandy back in 2012 & power was out for about 40 days. Lots & lots of roads were block for about 2 weeks. leaving home was a lot like navigating a real world maze since so may roads were blocked from fallen trees.

I just planted some rosemary and some peppermint seeds. The rosemary germed but the peppermint...i dont know. I really need a greenhouse
@@SullySupa If you can find someone who has fresh mint, get a stem and put it in water until roots grow, then plant it. Easiest way to grow mints.
Even if it just a few crops in a window, any food is better than none.
@@SullySupa Herbs can perk up a boring meal. All they need is a sunny windowsill. Parsley in a soup. Basil on a pizza. Ginger in a tea or stir fry. Rosemary on a baked onion or mint in a tea.
@@roxane7432 Yes, try growing a kitchen trash garden on a window sill can improve the taste of a meal. No sense in having the same thing every day. Plant the stems or roots of what you'd normally toss in the trash not that you should ever trash any food without thinking long and hard on if it can be stretched into another meal. Never drain a canned good or a rehydrated food down the sink as that is a broth no matter how weak. Or bones in the trash without boiling them twice for broth. The liquid off fruit can be added to tea or drunk. Never let food rot.

Hi Lilly, thanks for reporting on Storm Eowyn in Ireland. My elderly parents have just been informed that their electricity will be restored on 6th February - that is 2 weeks without electricity. They can't take it any more and have gone to a hotel at great expense. I'm sure others are still struggling in even worse circumstances.

Once prices goes up, it is hard to come down. So expect food and gas prices to stay high for the long haul. This is the time to grow as much food as you can. Can and freeze as much as you can. And you are right always need to have a backup plan for power. In fact I say have at least 3 ways to power what you need.

I am surprised how much Europe and the USA has changed. Life is much more difficult these days. It is impossible to live without worry and very difficult to find peace.

We have a favorite restaurant in the UK that we attend with two of our close friends once a month. It used to cost us around £80 (for 4 adults, one young child, and this was about 2 years ago). This weekend, ordering approximately the same things (give or take), it was £250. We're seriously thinking about leaving the UK. Thankfully, my wife was born in a country where things are still dirt cheap (including housing).
In the Netherlands the government wants to increase the VAT to 21.4%. And we have high taxes on energy, petrol, road use, obligatory health insurance etc.
You are slaves in Europe. It’s sad. You don’t even know it. You make lower incomes, pay massive taxes on it, then pay 20% VAT and prices have increased too.

We have 15% on food here in NZ
We have VAT on food in the UK, between 5 and 20% depending on the item. A few things are zero!
@g8itb-radio not sure about every state, they are all different, but in Michigan there is no tax on food from a store. There is a standard sales tax on prepared food from a restaurant.

Washing machines, fridges and hot water systems eat power... The things we have in our houses that are always working quietly in the background. Most people ignore them until the power goes off. A generator is the only solution for power hungry appliances.

If you have radios and scanners, you might consider plugging in and monitoring the frequencies of all the small radios that people tend to have lying around for emergency traffic and to gain information about things happening near you. It will vary in your country but in the US that would be FRS/GMRS, MURS, Marine (ch 9, 16, 22, 68+), Citizens Band, Dot and Star channels, and even old 49MHz walkie-talkie frequencies. It takes a little while to plug them all in, but when the phones, Internet and power go down, you will hear many things and maybe save someone's life too. When the noise of electricity is gone, these radios can be heard much better too.

Plant, people, plant!! You can reuse cleaned, "disposable" food bottles and containers, add soil, plant seeds, sprouted potatoes, etc. (that had food , except milk jugs). There is info on here and fb on how to propagate (regrow) food scraps. ck out what parts to use and how to do it.

Hyundai has a nice cheap (1k-ish) 8.5KW generator that you can run all day.

We had an ice storm in NY USA in 1991, took out power for over a week. Luckily my family had an old hand pump on their well so they still had fresh water for potable purposes and to flush. A wood stove kept us from freezing. Food was the least of our problems. Travel was restricted as roads were impassable due to downed trees. This was childs play compared to what just happened in N. Carolina. You must be ready to face the worst as Lilly encourages.
I am sorry for Europe's food inflation, but I think the reporting of their percentages are more honest than the reports of the food inflation and cost of living in The United States, as we got a 2.5% increase in our retirement for a cost-of-living adjustment, when our health insurances went up more, our egg prices are up 100%, some foods have gone up 400% in four years.

Lilly, the best idea is a large watt solar generator and a dual fuel gas/propane generator. The solar generator can get recharged to 100% by the dual fuel generator in apx 2 hours instead of using fuel all day/night
