never seen a IFR500A here in the UK. looks late 1970's with the thumbwheel switches? through the 1980's i carried a thumbwheel AOR 240A 2M handy. I have an early 1980s FDK Multi 750 for 2M multimode. and of course several Bao's and Quansheng, I also have a K5 (8) but use the bigger battery from the UV 5plus version
I was with that one for almost 15 years. It was an excellent equipment from IFR. You could retune that piece with a screw driver!

It is a communications monitor.
IFRs are specialized for avionics, because aircraft comm uses AM instead of FM.
