I think the two were clearly intended as references to the same practice, and I was just commenting on the fact that we often try to sort out which of the people who support a crazy idea are true believers (ie crazy) and which are con men, and this implies that that might be a fool's errand because some people are both. This video is Jenny's Evangelion. It starts out as a normal enough review with the standard plot summary and numbered list, but turns into a commentary on the entire format and the pressure of having to make content based on social media expectations, not to mention addressing negative backlash to the content you make and creator burnout. A masterpiece.

      @mariokarter13 5 років тому +1

      It's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison though. When you make a story you make a series of promises to the audience, this thing I've set up will lead to something later and you should care. UA-cam doesn't have that expectation. You've got more or less a blank slate, your past work doesn't have to influence what you do in the future. A story is a singular project, a UA-cam channel is a series of many projects. Outside influence is only as strong as you let it.

    • @KetsubanSolo
      @KetsubanSolo 5 років тому +10

      @@mariokarter13 you'd like to think that, but it's not that easy. Subscriber count and fame is a double-edged sword, and subconciously, you'll start trying to feed into giving the audience what they want instead of doing your passion projects, especially when money is involved.
      I never had a monetized channel, but back in the day, I used to make MUGEN videos. One day I had a space jam mashup in there and it started gaining popularity. Eventually, I started focusing on mashing Space Jam up with whatever I could find and making a funny vid thumbnail by shopping Charles Barkley's face onto stuff, and started taking requests when people asked me to mashup Space Jam with such and such (most famously, Maffew of Botchamania used some of my mashups and on one occasion asked me to do one especially for him, but I didn't think anything of it until my online friends were like "holy shit dude Maffew is asking you for space jam mashups")
      Slapping Space Jam onto something isn't hard but I wanted those views+subscribers so I kept doing it even when the process got more and more robotic, and started making less and less of what I actually wanted to do.
      So in summary, popularity can hurt creativity, and I am so sorry for helping to popularize Space Jam mashups

I don't know if people have just developed these astronomically high expectations or what but I basically watch the trailer, and if I like the trailer I go into the movie expecting to see a very long version of the trailer. It is worth watching the first few seasons of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (even if it's never something you would consider watching) if only to experience Jenny's parody-work in "Friendship is Witchcraft." (This ua-cam.com/video/H4tyvJJzSDk/v-deo.html video is pretty damn cool, too.)
      As a film/advertising student who more or less dropped out after realizing the growing control content-producing corporations like Disney are having through integrated advertising and social engineering (there's a longer story here, but tl;dr - my favorite movie used to be Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and then I learned it was part of a 3-part propoganda-movie deal between Frank Capra and the US govt.) and ideologically not wanting to contribute to that even in an ancillary way, personally, I find the most inspiring part of Jenny's channel to be the deep-cuts that she finds of people making art for its own sake, and that those people have the courage to put their bad, half-baked fantasies - about being trapped in a island with Josh Hutcherson, for example - out there for the whole internet-connected world to see.

      I really admire Jenny's creativity. (I'm grateful for having seen MLP if only for getting to laugh my ass off start to finish through FiW.)
      There's a lot I don't like about how Star Wars has been going, from little, nit-picky things to the de-canonization of the EU (even though I hardly read any of it myself) and the (Marvel) Extended-Universe-approach to telling these new stories.
      I'm mad that Disney is so petty, cut-throat, and vindictive in its business practices. I wish I could live in the timeline where the Disney company failed and Robin Williams was alive and was making passion projects where he had full artistic control, and that those kind of things were the things that "sell."
      I can't speak for your whole viewership, Jenny, but if you need to move on from this format to other things and only maybe do these about films/whatever that you feel really passionate about, good. Please do :)
      PS - Jenna, sorry for piggy-backing on your well-liked comment. I feel like what I said here is kind of relevant to the theme of this video and I put it here as a reply so it will be more visible ... even though doing so instead of posting it as a standalone to be forever lost in "recent" completely undercuts my point about not pandering ... -_-
