China and Thailand have pledged to jointly crack down on dozens of cyber scam gangs in Myanmar and related human trafficking, according to Thai media reports. The action follows the recent high-profile case of a Chinese actor allegedly kidnapped from Thailand and forced to work at a scam centre in Myanmar. News of the apparent abduction has left Chinese travellers wary about travelling to Thailand, a popular holiday destination for Chinese tourists. One security expert says that while Thailand overall remains a safe tourist destination, people should avoid travel to the country’s border areas.

Illegally and legally, there are tons of big businesses in Thailand operated by Chinese that only receive & serve Chinese tourists.

Chinese scam operate in Myanmar and in Cambodia. They lure the Chinese to come to Thailand and pickup them to Thai border and go to Myanmar.
These things happen because of corruption in the country. Drugs, human trafficking, scams, that's all due to weak rules and law enforcement very similar to how Western European defecate to East Europe. A whole Taiwanese scam group in Bali Indonesia was caught because these areas are very corrupt.
Still going there for travel, i'm not going there because some strangers told me i have a job and where i need to go and meet them. If you are mentally sane you would immediately understand what it means and avoid it.

We are non-Thais living in Bangkok. It’s safe and enjoyable except for the current air pollution which is mainly due to the agricultural burning 🔥. If you are coming here for holiday travels then all is well. BUT if you’re coming here for arranged high-pay-job opportunities OR get-rich-quick schemes then you better wise up and don’t come here. Such scams can happen in any country if you don’t act and think wisely.

That’s NOT how it works. You did not watch the video. The lucrative jobs are based in Thailand but soon after the victims get to Thailand, they are kidnapped and sent to a border town in Myanmar. Of course the victims are not entirely brainless, if the job was in Myanmar, most wouldn’t go.

Do you know whole story. he came to Thailand coz scammers said has a high paid job for him then they picked him at the airport. At this point it's not about corruptions. don't say this kind of things doesn't happens in US or anywhere in the world. All they can do is blacklist those kidnappers. But most of the time victims wouldn't come back to tell the true.

From my country's experience, majority of the operators of these scam centers are also mainland chinese BUT operators also include vietnamese, cambodian, taiwanese and lately africans

The Chinese hire locals to scam their own people. So they trick Vietnamese to come there to work because they need workers who speak Vietnamese to scam Vietnamese people. Same for other nationalities. But the overall profits go to Chinese.
The crackdown only happened because 'private' media and social media news about the actor missing got out of hand and beyond censorship. They know and remain silent till things blow up as usual. DO NOT travel to myanmar's neighbor until nyanmar itself settle. Calling it safe is a joke when human is the target, it never is and never will.

I am from Saudi Arabia, i stayed in Manila in the Philippines for 6 months. At my time there in Malate, an incident happened where 2 Chinese men fell off the 11th floor of an adjacent tower in an attempt to escape the Filipino police, and the 2 are gone. Turns out those 2 were involved with a Chinese criminal gambling syndicate.

That area is controlled by another faction of army e.g. Karen Army not the Myanmar Junta government. That made it complicated. Myanmar is chaotic, sort of uncontrollable, can’t be organized and managed well and systematically.

I'm in Thailand right now (Chinese New Year 2025), traveled here from Shanghai. I've been cycling around Northern Thailand for 6 weeks, much of it very close to the Myanmar Border: Khun Yuam, Mae Hong Son, Fang, Mae Sai, Chiang Saen, all of these less than 20km from the Myanmar border. Actually, I got as close as 100 meters from the border at one point. I never saw even a hint of danger, or anyone trying to scam me or abduct me. Nor did I hear of such a thing. Nor did I feel afraid or unsafe at any point. I'm getting close to the end of 7 wonderful weeks in Thailand.

Criminals are criminals regardless of ethnicity or nationality. The scammers operate outside of China precisely because that puts them beyond the reach of Chinese law enforcement. Chinese travelers are disappointed that Thai law enforcement isn't cracking down on these scammers. Chinese citizens do not have a racist hive mind like you commentators.

As a Hong Konger living in Malaysia, I don't think the whole Southeast Asia are dangerous. Malaysia is a clean and have a safe environment. I have heard that a lot of Chinese tourists complain about the danger in Thailand in news as well. Some Chinese people got kidnapped and used as slaves which is honestly terrifying. At March, I am going to go to Thailand for FOBISIA competition and I am a little bit afraid that I will get kidnapped but I think I will be safe as long as I follow the group leader in there. RIP for the Chinese that got kidnapped, rest in peace.

For your information, if you are traveling to Thailand for leisure, I can guarantee you that you will have a pleasant time there. Those who are being kidnapped due to their own greed to make hefty money. I’m pretty sure you won’t be abducted under the broad daylight in the capital city of Bangkok. I just came back, it was great lol. High smog in BKK, but otherwise it was lovely in Phuket, Pattaya and Chonburi. It was so weird to see chinese new-years performances, with no loud and pushy mainlanders.

I would steer clear of Thailand if the Thai/Myanmar land border is not secure. I'm pretty sure the Thai guards near the Myanmar land borders are either in on it or they just couldn't care less allowing foreigners to cross the land border by the abductors.

Mostly, 90%, Chinese scammers often smuggle victims out of Thailand along these routes. Sometimes the Thai police can intercept them before they cross into Myanmar and rescue the victims. However, if it is a natural route, it's even more difficult to rescue. And the victims often do not know that they have crossed into Myanmar. By the time they realize it, it is too late.

Thailand is safe to travel to, don't try to get work through some strange agency, or go to unknown areas on the border.
The mere fact that you get picked from the airport, which is a well know international one with up to date security protocols, or get shipped from your hotel in Bangkok to the border region which takes atleast 5 to 7 hours by road, goes to show how well this scam is organised and how well the syndicate is structured ! *Triad♡Royal Thai authorities*
FACT: After arriving in Bangkok, the Chinese actor took a taxi to the border region. No one came to pick him at the airport and on the way to the border, there were police checkpoints where he even showed his passport to the police.

Last year two kids from my country was kidnapped from Bangkok hotel. It was all over the news in my country. The mother couldn't recover from that and still in mental hospital... It's sounds insane to me to say "safe county" where kidnapping people happens everyday.

I never had an issue in Thailand with safety except when driving on the roads. I have been in and out of the country since 2002, although my experience is different than other people from other countries.

I once went to Thailand planning to travel it from its capital to its South, thinking of staying there for a few months, but on my second day in Bangkok I was robbed by a thief. On a crowded street of Bangkok in the evening someone opened my backpack while I was still wearing it and walking, and took my documents and my wallet. I didn't feel a thing. I discovered I lost all my cash money, cards and my documents only in the hotel, when I saw that my backpack was wide open. I phoned my bank, blocked all my cards and ran back tracing my path trying to maybe find at least my id documents, the group of thai guys sitting on the delivery bikes were looking at me and mockingly laughing out loud, they must have saw and known something, or stole themselves and making fun of me. I was devastated. Coming days were a struggle to survive without money, restore documents, and find a way to return to my homeland. Having no cash I had to walk from the center of bangkok to the airport at the outer rural area, I was walking like 12 hours non stop, barely making it to my flight time - it was a nightmare.
No! Please don't put yourself in unnecessary danger! Avoid Thailand and SEA for the next 6 months.

Has anyone wondered why this Chinese actor been released within 24 hours? Thailand is a country of heavy corruptions and here, anything take makes a lot of money is anything goes. Bangkok to Mae Sot is only about 500 km and once you've been human trafficked there, you belong to the scammers. My personal point of view, nope it is not safe in the northern part of Thailand.

This whole thing is full of holes. The main one being the actor was taken to Myanmar after arriving in Bangkok. That’s where (Myanmar) the crimes are being plotted and executed, not Thailand.
I was back from Thailand from a short holiday. No issues at all if you are not falling for these online scams to work for lucrative jobs. As a tourist visiting you do not get involved into such stuff so it's still as safe as usual

I visited Bangkok Thailand in 2015 with my friends.. Even at that time, I don’t think Thailand is a safe place to travel. I and my friends had unpleasant experiences with local people who looked like criminals, intimidating and threatening us to use their “service”. Since then, I travelled to many countries, but never come across to my mind to visit Bangkok again. I don’t hate Thai people, but somehow just don’t feel safe there. That unsafe feeling kind of similar when I traveled to very remote lawless places in Brazil, or when I walked in San Francisco or Fifth Avenue New York where I encountered so many homeless people and drug addicted junkies along the pedestrian path in the downtown areas.. just feel so unsafe
that time coup d'etat in thailand and places that foreigners go to are often told by other foreigners that they are places that Thai people don't want to promote, such as Nana or Patong in Phuket.
I have lived in Thailand 8 years and never been fearful unlike rude encounters here with Chinese.
Some of those people aren't even Thai. They are mostly migrants from other southeast Asian countries. When I go and hear them speak I automatically know they aren't Thai. Mostly are Cambodians, Burmese and Malaysian.

Thailand-especially Bangkok-has been known as a place with criminals, gangs, and underground shady activities for decades. It has even been depicted in many movies from Hollywood and Hong Kong. It is free and fun but definitely not safe. Don't know why some people still try hard to defend and call it "safe" and victim blaming on the Chinese tourists. lol
