Really a brilliant artist and all around fun/crazy/genius human being. What I love about Todd is that he can be so cynical and seemingly misanthropic, but in the end, he's actually a staunch humanitarian with a huge heart... the tension most of us all feel inside. His songs are about love in all its myriad dimensions. One of my favorite artists from a musical, lyrical and "great soul" perspective.
+tdshizno Great!! There is no more "creative music" these days! Todd's whole career came out of his brain and rock music with ballads............all you find today is, 'if you look good but can't sing..... you're great, we'll get someone else to sing it"............. Todd is 50 years in the music business... who can survive that? I can suggest you listen to some Frank Zappa if you want to get into what a "true genius" was! What's with the Justin Beiber crap of these days................ blaaaaaaaah..... makes me pissed!!
He was absolutely at his peak as a guitarist around this period. Anything he played or recorded on this fender mustang was incredible!! Really great lead tones.
Blistering guitar playing.... Such a great song... I feel sorry for anyone who hasn't had the chance to be moved by this musical genius...and he is still going strong...
This is a Todd Rundgrun live vocal performance that could be possibly his absolute best work bar none.....Even better than "Back To The Bars"! I've been playing this song on guitar for 35 years!
I used to grab my daughter and dance with her to this song. She was small, about 7 or 8. But what's really freaky is that I was at my daughter's house, listening to this song and my grand daughter looked at us and said "do you want to dance?". We both were gob smacked! Will ALWAYS love this man.
AMAZING His voice goes into my soul, the feeling he puts into his music is unequaled by anyone. What a true genius. To see him in concert would be a dream come true.
I thought of this tune as I took my last ride on my bike (before I sold it). I built that machine from the ground up and it took me many miles without any real mechanical hassles. Todd R. is a great guitarist, lyricist, vocalist, engineer and producer. Of course, there was Todd with The Nazz ("Open My Eyes"). Best to Todd and everyone in 2013.
I wish I would have paid more attention to TODD in my teens. Just now discovering what a great guitar player he is and was. I was to busy with METAL only.
First time seeing this. Great performance. Multi-instrumentalist and great voice. I only knew a couple of his early hits-didn't know he was this talented.
I saw Todd TWICE what a blessed artist he is i loved when he was on Daryl Hall's show they played in Hawaii at Todd's home they sang "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" awesome
Almost too beautiful and sad to listen to. One of Todd's greatest and we all know there are so many. I have found true love in my life the last couple years and hope I always cherish her and never take her for granted.
woooooowww!!!! this is amazing. this man is very very talented. my gosh such incredible music. Spiritual, organic, full of heart. wow I can't even put into words. he can sing that good, play guitar that good and even play piano on top of it??? incredible simply incredible
1 year ago before Covid, I knew very little of Todd (except the hits) I'm happy to say I've learned so much more Todd/Utopia music (like this one) the past year. Am I too late? I hope not!
I've discovered his music this summer. I've listened to the most important rock and roll songwriters ever and I have to say he has reached my top 5 in a short period of time... He's incredible, awesome, magic! It's a pitty there's no too much information about him on the internet.
+Pablo Petidier Smit they are making a documentary right now about him called "Todd who?"... this is a great article about his work, I think www.soundonsound.com/sos/may04/articles/toddrundgren.htm
Pablo just keep listening. he constantly evolved. I got hooked on Oops WrongPlanet, Back to the Bars, Initiation, Something/Anything, Healing, tiny demons, Nearly Human & can't think of the more Opera one with Gayas Eyes on it. Been listening to old and new. Check out the live Tokyo tour of Nearly Human. His wife of today is one of the hot background singers. Can't tell you which. saw her on live at Darrells House. She has changed. they live and have a tiki bar in Hawaii. He constantly Changes so pick a genre!
Since 1976 a siX year old Dave roamed neighborhoods of Lexington's New houses, listening to constructionqorker's jamboxes provide the soundtrack of my younger years: T.R.'s song being most remembered, a bigtime fan became I, as well too.
excellent song of an ending relationship . todd is right up there with the best soul singers 'also has the ability to wring heartwrenching notes from a guitar that seems to be wired directly to his heart
Good comments. Us fans don't care, as long as Todd keeps crankin' out the tunes. Great player, writer, musician. Thanks for post. Thank you Todd/U-Tube/Friends
How is it possible that Todd is still not in the R & R Hall of Fame? Can anyone name any other rock artist with his level of all around talent? He writes great songs, is a brilliant guitarist, sings beautifully, is an in demand producer, and is cool as hell !! I remember Mike Bloomfield raving about his guitar playing back in the early seventies. To add insult to injury, Todd didn't even make Rolling Stones list of 100 greatest guitarists. And Springstein did. What a joke !!!!
Nobody is in Todd's class - Period. We fans LOVE Todd... His music is all about LOVE and loss and personal growth. For us 70's people, he is part of us. He is part of our emotional makeup. Rest Assured Todd, we core followers - although smaller in numbers, are 10X more committed than your average sorry fan. I'll remember every minute at Ultrasonic Studios -WLIR Radio- The Schaeffer Concerts..and all the great venues in PA. Don't stop Todd..keep shouting the message of LOVE!
Such beautiful impressionist chord progressions in this song! When I was 13 and discovered Todd for the first time (a generation or so late-- I am now in my late twenties,) my first thought was, "If Maurice Ravel had composed for a rock band, it would've sounded like this." It came as no surprise when, years later, I read an interview in which Rundgren cited Ravel as his #1 influence as a composer. Now if only the rest of the world would recognize the connection and herald Todd's genius!
I was lucky enough to see Todd in London (about 1979 I think...I was kinda wasted at the time) and he was just awesome!!!. He has written some great tunes and he is I think underrated and deserves more recognition, great great guitarist and I wish sometimes that he had used it slightly more. Having said that listen to some of Utopias work..Caravan for instance..now there's a song!
Simply Spectacular Live Performance...the writing, singing, and especially the soloing from Todd are Sensational....He has set a solid standard in the music world and his own following is steadfast and dedicated...Todd Rocks
Grew up with the man... Todd, Utopia days.... This song stills sends chills up and down me. Question: I think Utopia (off the Utopia album) is only one of few rock songs released on album as live. Am I wrong, anybody know with out googling? Sara thanks for the memory, it was a good time in my life.
I can never get enough of this song/album. TODD IS GODD. Emerson ,Lake and Palmer were going to recrut Jimmy Hendrex and call the band HELP. I had a thought. Its been said that Keith Emerson is to keyboards as Todd is to guitar. Just imagine : Emerson ,Lake ,Palmer, and Rundgren.Greg Lake and Todd's voices together. Electric and acustic guitar. Greg and Todd with double-neck guitars. Idont know about Heven or Hell but that would be the greatest show on Earth. Just a wish I have.
Todd Rundgren..a brilliant composer, singer, guitarist and keyboardist! I do wish he would put Utopia back together for a tour. I saw them a few times, they were really amazing and the combination of Todd's voice and Kasim Sultan's voice harmonies was awesome. And Todd has a very unusual guitar style. Very cool!
You nailed it J-po. I taped this exact performance off the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show, and certain of the guitar fills here are among the best Todd ever did, IMHO.
Agreed, Demon. well said. It is all minor pentatonic stuff, which we have all heard ad nauseum. But Todd pulls it off and somehow makes it timeless, his own, and fresh. Hey, everybody is Going To Heaven, right? I never get tired of Todds music- the analog stuff, not the computer stuff. Give this guy a guitar or piano and it just plain works.
Oh let's not put put him in the Rock Hall. I mean seriously. Stunning guitar work on a Fender Mustang, stunning vocals stunning song writing enough said
this is what i grew up listening too......for the real Todd fans who still listen to the sound of the pickaxe in the mountain as the intro to when Todd renders a guitar solo to blow your sock off I salute you.
Wasn't he simply delicious???!!! The hair, the face, the vocals and that screaming guitar.. People that have met him state he's funny, kind, bizarre (of course!) and thus left quite an impact on them. I'm going on 41 yrs of his music and never get tired. Love that Todd!
I watch this video ... and I realize all over again why I came to like this talented guy. Thank you thank you thank you to my big bro, for introducing him to The Todd Album. It was all uphill from there!
I instantly became a fan. Never heard of that guy before today. The best live performance I ever seen from anyone.
So have you seen him live yet?
What a moment for you! Todd is the best!
huh?
Really a brilliant artist and all around fun/crazy/genius human being. What I love about Todd is that he can be so cynical and seemingly misanthropic, but in the end, he's actually a staunch humanitarian with a huge heart... the tension most of us all feel inside. His songs are about love in all its myriad dimensions. One of my favorite artists from a musical, lyrical and "great soul" perspective.
My dad's a todd rundgren fan and i would have to say i think i am now a convert, unbelievable why can't my generation have great artists like this?
+tdshizno Great!! There is no more "creative music" these days! Welcome to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Mr Rundgren.
Better late than never I say.
Finally a rock and roll hall of famer. Well deserved...congrats Todd!!!!!

It’s on Back to the Bars. Best album for me. I love live albums

I Just Love Todd. Been a fan for 50 years
I used to grab my daughter and dance with her to this song. She was small, about 7 or 8. But what's really freaky is that I was at my daughter's house, listening to this song and my grand daughter looked at us and said "do you want to dance?". We both were gob smacked! Will ALWAYS love this man.
Wow. Todd really tears it up on guitar here. Beautiful.
AMAZING His voice goes into my soul, the feeling he puts into his music is unequaled by anyone. What a true genius. To see him in concert would be a dream come true.

Todd is utterly magnificent. My greatest musical inspiration.
Damn it Todd this is my favorite song ever. Makes me cry everytime I hear it. Masterpiece. How many years of memories? 1973 Winterland.
Been a fan for over 40 years....Never heard this version. Always thought the Back to the bars version was the standard but this is amazing. Thanks
Not sure how this could possibly even have one thumbs down? This is phenomenal!
April 1st 2022, this song never gets old!!!!
I wish I would have paid more attention to TODD in my teens. Just now discovering what a great guitar player he is and was. I was to busy with METAL only.

Blue eyed soul at its best.
todd is my hero........a wizard a true a true star is like in my top 3 all time albums.....
Nobody like Todd: songwriting, varied musical styles, musicianship, producing ... unique.
Man, I would have a crush on Todd Rundgren if I knew him as a young man.
Almost too beautiful and sad to listen to. One of Todd's greatest and we all know there are so many.
I have found true love in my life the last couple years and hope I always cherish her and never take her for granted.

Love him!! Wonderful voice, multi-talented😎❤✌
1 year ago before Covid, I knew very little of Todd (except the hits) I'm happy to say I've learned so much more Todd/Utopia music (like this one) the past year. Am I too late? I hope not!

+Pablo Petidier Smit really? I think there is a lot of info about his entire life & career on the internet
+Don HItt Looking on Google I can't easily find docummentaries, biographies, etc. I'd really appreciate interesting links about him :)
+Pablo Petidier Smit they are making a documentary right now about him called "Todd who?"... this is a great article about his work, I think www.soundonsound.com/sos/may04/articles/toddrundgren.htm

+Carol koon "Second Wind" has Gaia's Eyes on it
Incredible hair, incredible style
oo and did I mention Incredible hair!
I wish I could make my Fender Mustang sound like that. Todd is definitely the whole package-singer, songwriter, musician, performer.
Since 1976 a siX year old Dave roamed neighborhoods of Lexington's New houses, listening to constructionqorker's jamboxes provide the soundtrack of my younger years: T.R.'s song being most remembered, a bigtime fan became I, as well too.
Soul singer and guitar wizard all at the same time! Todd was indeed God!!!! Don't tell me Prince wasn't watching!!
Todd at his best. Which is very good indeed!
SMOKIN' HOT TR with that Mustang! Some of the most stinging Todd notes EVER!
a true classic all should view.
Absolute top of his game, right here.
excellent song of an ending relationship . todd is right up there with the best soul singers 'also has the ability to wring heartwrenching notes from a guitar that seems to be wired directly to his heart
oh my god, I just recently came to know the genius of this man's performances. I love his expression in this one.
Oh my, Todd is Godd. I love you Todd, there will never
be anyone better than you...
Good comments.
Us fans don't care, as long as Todd keeps crankin' out the tunes.

Absolutely amazing
Anyone who dislikes this performance just isn't a music lover, imo
Agree.
My freakin god just brilliant. And Zappa worthy lead guitar runs!! Or should I say Todd worthy lead guitar runs... Spectacular live Todd!
One of his all-time best; who needs "Bang On The Drum" when you've got THIS?
Todd in one of his soulful moments on this one.
30 years ago - incredible! Thanks for sharing.
One of the greatest at one of his many career peaks. Thanks!
Absolutely the best version ❤️
Rundgren fan… props for this upload. I’m only 12 years late

One of America's musical genius's. Right at the top.
...a shiver and a sigh...none better.
Awesome guitar solo! Best version of this song available.
One of TR and crew's finest moments...
Go BANANAS!
Todd Rules!
Oh yes, Philly Blue Eyed Soul Man. So glad you guys have this stuff and post it.
I couldn't agree with you more. We should start a campaign to get him in.
Like Stevie Wonder, Todd is the greatest at music yet somehow represents something beyond music.
You nailed it J-po. I taped this exact performance off the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show, and certain of the guitar fills here are among the best Todd ever did, IMHO.
One of my favs.
My favorite song.
Music is not a universal truth, but rather a form of art. Art is defined by the people who consume it -- it means whatever you believe it means.
Hes sooo awesome
Utopian!!!! Rundgrenfan, You've presented a wonderful collection of Todd R!

Oh let's not put put him in the Rock Hall. I mean seriously. Stunning guitar work on a Fender Mustang, stunning vocals stunning song writing enough said
Great song
Yeah. I'm guessing it was during the "Opps! Wrong Planet" Tour.
Thank you man. Driving in my '77 Celica cranking it..
this is what i grew up listening too......for the real Todd fans who still listen to the sound of the pickaxe in the mountain as the intro to when Todd renders a guitar solo to blow your sock off I salute you.
Oh mercy.....it just doesn't get any better
"Wet carrots" have feelings too - Thanks again,Todd.
Awesome video rundgrenfan!! I'm going to see Todd Oct 12, and I can't wait!! He really is AWATS

I listen to this over and over and over again. Can't get enough. His playing makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up!!!!!
Still listening and loving it...2019
Wasn't he simply delicious???!!! The hair, the face, the vocals and that screaming guitar..
