November at RHS Harlow Carr Gardens

- Harlow Carr is always worth a visit so as 5th November turned out to have some brightness in the sky and a chilly breeze we spent the afternoon there. The Streamside walk was a must as the Main Borders had just about finished flowering and we had not seen the stream since they started cleaning and replanting last time I saw it. At the end of the Streamside walk is The Queen Mother’s Lake where it seemed some work was going on so we decided not to walk back through the rest of the flower beds but to take a path back through the wooded area that we had not walked before. That path led to the Harlow Carr Arboretum, which we had not been to before, so a good chance to walk back through that. It was interesting to see how it differed compared to others we had visited and it had it’s own charm. We came back into the gardens near The Old Bath House and Betty’s Tea House having time for a quick visit to part of the Vegetable Garden before leaving as the gardens were due to close early. Still a lot to see there and I would like to visit in Spring as I have not been there at that time of the year.
By accident I did have the wrong setting on my camera that day so it is not as smooth as my usual HD setting. Hope you still enjoy it and thank you for viewing.

Thank you for your kind comments. I knew that cloud formation was called Mackerel sky as it looks like the scales on a fish but I found more than one Folklore on it but this one seemed the most popular. I was driving home in late afternoon one very cold December and saw a mackerel sky tinged with pink. It was the best I have ever seen. Have a happy day. Warm greetings, Julie.

A wonderful place, I especially liked the wood carvings and the little stream, I was surprised to see so many flowers out for the time of year, lovely selection of Fungi and plenty of colourful leaves to enjoy. Many thanks.

Thanks so much Brenda. Yes, the wall as we go down to the gardens was very pretty with those pumpkins. I feel so lucky to have got that visit in before the weather turned bad again so now I would like to see those gardens in late spring as I have seen them in February and last time mid summer and this year late autumn. As we do not get there until around 12noon, so we get just the afternoon there and cannot get around it all every visit. I know they have a lot of Candelabra primroses along the Streamside last time I was there and they looked lovely, so looked as if one or two were showing early. Yes it was a perfect day for that visit as I didn't think I would get there when we had that little fall of snow. It was nice to walk some parts that we had not been to before and I found that they are planning to extend the garden soon, That will be nice to see when they get it finished. Thank you for viewing. Hello Julie. I really enjoyed the walk in the garden. Great garden arrangements and fruitful trees and shrubs. tall grasses and beautifully flowering vegetation.
I love nature and such walks are a balm for the eyes and heart.
The arboretum is also charming - it cannot be otherwise. My favorite thing was the dancing Japanese red maples in the wind.
Wood carvings were interesting ...are amazing!

I like all the colorful foliage everywhere and the cute little red flower at 2:52. It’s nice to hear the little waterfall of the pond. The sculptures at 4:52 and 8:45 are wonderful ! This garden is amazing to visit even in November ! Beautiful video Julie ! Warm greetings, Annie
I didn't know that those "Four Seasons Sculptures" by American artist Philip Haas were there until we came across some info about them but I didn't find a fourth one so it may been near the alpine glasshouse that we didn't get to see on that day. I want to go back in the end of May/late spring next time as I have been in late Feb and mid summer other years. In December they have an evening Glow Festival with a dazzling displays lighting a magical trail in the gardens and I wish we lived closer to go to that.
The one @ 2:52 are the fruits of a Euonymus alatus or Winged spindle tree. I think it lovely with leaves turning red in autumn and then those unusual fruits pods. Thank you for viewing Annie. Have a happy day and keep warm. Warm greetings, Julie😊🍂
Good morning Julie, Harlow Carr is a beautiful garden, and surely walking along its paths and seeing its flowers and the Queen Mother's lake has to be enjoyed a lot. But I have to say that I also loved the forest back and the mushrooms that you shared, two of them very beautiful the Trooping Funnel (Infundibulicybe Geotropa) and The Shaggy Inkcap, Coprinus comatus

Thank you Manu, I thought you would let me know what those mushrooms were. I was so pleased I came across some near the trees and then again a lot of white ones in the Bamboo glade. Thank you Nel. It is the nearest RHS Garden to us but by the time we get there we only get an afternoon to walk around. I think spring there should be nice this year as they have lot of candelabra primroses along the stream walk. Thank you Don. It was lovely get in that visit before the weather turned awful again. Now I have to see if we can get a visit to see the gardens in late May to early June as that is one time of the year I haven't been. So much to see everything in one visit and getting there from home I only get an afternoon there. Hope all is well up there with you. I always find English landscape gardens attractive. I haven't been to England for about 3 years now because of the corona measures. My wife and I want to come again next spring. We never miss a visit to a castle garden or landscape garden. Nice movie!

This corona virus has spoil plans for so many of us. It is always nice to visit Harlow Carr as it is the RHS Garden in North Yorkshire so not far from us. I was pleased to see the "seasons" but could not find "Spring" I think it must have been near the alpine house that that afternoon. Hi Julie. Autumn can be the most colourful of all seasons with all those oranges and yellows, and still has a lot of all year round green too. Hope you and your family are well. I had my booster last Thursday. felt not too great for a bout 24 after and then got back to normal again. Had a couple of bookings cancelled due to people not wanting to come out. I do hope that this year is going to be a lot better than last, I think it will be. Take care and seasons greetings. Geoff
Thank you Geoff. So pleased you had the booster. I had my booster as well and I never felt bad at all even though I know of some that were a bit off for a few hours. This new virus is causing a lot of upsets and even those, like us, who have had three jabs, are still having to conform to what we should or should not do! Now people are getting the injections they are offered I feel things should be better next year. Making plans is a pain and I am one who like to know what I am going to do in advance. Knowing what day it is just now is getting harder 🤔 Still, getting out to visit this RHS garden was unplanned for November but, when the weather turned out so pleasant that day, off we went and had a lovely afternoon there. Thank you Helena. I felt so lucky to have an afternoon there before the weather got colder. I didn't think I would get much autumn colour this year but as I edited the footage I realised there was more that I thought. I have been a few times to Harlow Carr over the years but only get an afternoon there by the time we get there. Taking my camera I have been in late winter/early spring and last time was in mid summer so I do hope on my next visit to see what the garden planting is like in mid - late spring. Although Harlow Carr is more compact than other RHS ones that seem huge, they have so much to see I never get around it all in one visit. All this new strain with pandemic is causing more restrictions over here now. We do not seem to know what is going on from day to day and we seem to be back where we were last Christmas time! Thank you Julie for introducing me to this beautiful garden and park. And even without the HD setting I really liked it a lot. The colors are very good. And I am also curious with you what it will be like in the spring. But also this season gave beautiful colors of autumn clothing of many leaves of shrubs and trees. And November sun also let the ducks enjoy themselves on the lake. That old tree sign was also a nice message. And how beautiful the sculptures also told a story. It's really cool that they can make this. I also thought it was a very nice autumn walk and visit. Wish you beautiful loving days.😘😘✅
Thank you for your kind comments Tine. I was so cross when I found I had my camera set on a lower setting. It was still taken in HD but at 25fps not the higher 50fps that I always have it on. I must have been playing around with some settings and not being careful when I put the camera away🤔 That day in November, the weather was such a surprise. The sun came out and we went off in a rush as I really wanted to get some of autumn colours before winter set in. It was nice to see part of the gardens we had not walked before.

This RHS Garden is the one nearest us but we still do not get there much before Noon so I never get around it all in one visit. This visit that day in November turned out just right even if chilly, It is the first time I have walked through their arboretum even though I have been quite a few time. Many thanks Chris. I didn't think I would get out again this year when we had that fall of snow but that November day turned out lovely so off we went. We only get an afternoon there by the time we get to Harrogate so I never get around all of RHS Harlow Carr in one day so, this time, we decided to walk parts we do not usually see. I was pleased to see three season sculptures but couldn't find "Spring" so I think it was over near the alpine house and I was just too tired by then to go and see if it was there! I was so annoyed when I got around to editing my move clips, that I had my camera on the wrong setting. Do not know how that happened but I will be more careful in future. I think spring there should be nice this year as they have lot of candelabra primroses along the stream walk. Another triumph Julie 👍 You are spoilt for choice! Are you able to find inspiration from these gardens for your own garden? I imagine so as you only need to see a tiny corner or plant which could be replicated/planted at home. Would love to have all these gardens to visit (but when would I ever find time to leave my current mess!?). I have to rely on my garden books for inspiration. Yes, Hubby goes love a garden to walk around and it is great that we both like that. I do see plants and flowers I like but then I look at the large numbers they are planted in and I realise I could not do that in our garden. Still, I have been known to go in their plant centre on the way out and come out with a plant or two!
You would be in your element in these gardens but, as you say, finding some time from tending your garden, would be hard to find and getting you out of a garden centre even harder!!! I found out that they are extending some parts of Harlow Carr to open up to the public so that will be nice. It isn't as large as other RHS gardens we have been to but more compact but such a lot to get around as we only get the afternoon there by the time we arrive, Still, that means there can always be another visit. Thanks Julie, a very enjoyable tour of Harlow Carr. I loved the wooden sculptures and the one made out of vegetables. How could you pass Betty's tea room without going in, it's almost criminal!! Will you be gong to the "Glow" festival this year, it should be worth going to assuming the rain holds off... I don't know if it's related, but a couple of times I noticed the picture froze, only for a split second just before cutting to the next clip, would that be anything to do with your camera settings, I have never noticed that before? All the best to you, off now to do some shopping, Steve.
Thank you Steve. No we didn't have time to even pop into Betty's Cafe before leaving like other visits as we only had the afternoon there. It was a quick decision to go that day and I didn't realise until I was editing that the camera had been on 25fps and not 50fps. I was furious with myself for not checking as I had been playing around with settings a few day before. It wasn't as bad as I thought but then I noticed, too late, that the still photo on those purple flowers I had moved it off the edge on the first 2-3 seconds. I could have kicked myself for not checking the whole video before putting it on. Oh well, that will teach to check better next time. I did put in my write up about the setting mistake causing it not to be as smooth in places but didn't know about the other error until later. I really wish we were going to the "Glow" festival but dare not take that chance on the weather and I hate night driving as well!! Hope the restrictions with this new variant get no worse!
