  • In this film meet the British WW1 reenactors who are living in a WW1 trench in Belgium for the centenary of the 1914 Christmas truce.
It was an eye-opening experience for me to see the lengths that military reenactors will go to to show respect for the men who died.
Redcoat is actually me @redcoathistory (Give me a follow!) . I’m a writer, filmmaker and journalist originally from the UK but living in Johannesburg, South Africa.

For goodness sake people! Stop putting comments like:
"Why don't they get water up to their wast"
"Why do they get good coats"
Do you think the soldiers in WW1 would want you to get trench foot and suffer what they had to just to pay respects to them?
They died so we WOULDN'T have to experience that!

Yeah, besides, the water level came up if there wasn't drainage system as this trench HAS one... Also all soldiers did have "good" coats as in greatcoats...

When I was a kid, I tried to dig a 'fighting position' in our backyard. Dad was PISSED when I managed to damage the leech field from the septic tank. Guessing WWI smelled a lot like my 'fighting position'. Helping Dad with the repairs and backfilling the hole was the ORDER of the day. Well done SIR!

I had a trench in my back yard. But it wasn't that great, the envoirment looked like battle off asine and it was 170 centimeters deep and 1 meter wide. It had a ladder and it was confy. The bad part is that im only 15 so i wasn't alowed to keep it.

In school in the 60's we had a teacher, past retirement age but nobody dared tell him, e had served in the 1st World War, when asked what he remember best he said "the smell of sh*t". Somehow that reduced the glory of war for us.

    • @redcoathistory
      @redcoathistory  2 роки тому +1

Ha ha what a brilliant answer and it makes perfect sense - the smells in the trenches must have been absolutely awful. I've been to towns where there has been massacres and a couple of dozen bodies can make the whole area stink like a rotten rubbish dump - I can only imagin what sort of smells come from thousands of bodies plus thousands of men pissing and shitting close to eachother...

I think that this is a very good RE-ENACTMENT video. Eight of my relatives served in WWI and about twenty in WWII. The comments below about who won which war, who kicked who out of where and who was beaten by who is ludicrous. England lost in the New World because the American alliance with France and things like Spanish intervention proved too expensive and a greater threat to the much more profitable colonies in the Caribbean. Without American supplied equipment after Dunkirk and onwards, Britain would have been up shit creek without a paddle and having sprung a leak.
Britain's 1914 regular army had been wiped out by the end of 1915. The vast flood of volunteers and the Territorial units held the line. The French were bled dry and many of the blood drenched attacks that the British made were to take pressure off the poor Poilu's. The Americans did make a difference and would have made an even bigger one if the war had carried on beyond 1918. As it was, the poor Doughboys had a good rifle, crap machine guns(the French Chauchat) and no American designed artillery. Artillery was British for the biggest calibres and French for light to medium calibres. American troops took a long time to get into action because of General Pershing's understandable wish to use his troops en masse instead of in penny packets. AND they fought very well.
As I said above, we would have been in trouble without American materiel in the first half of WWII but we had to pay for it, a debt which only ended a relatively few years ago. NO-ONE would have supplied us for free. After Pearl Harbour, America had to put its people onto a war footing. Never forget that it wasn't just the British who made a poor showing against the Japanese, compare the following; Singapore=The Philipines. If American aircraft carriers had been caught in harbour rather than battleships, the whole complexion of the war in the Pacific and SE Asia would have been very different.
In Europe, Britain would never have had the man power to invade Normandy alone. Britain could never have assembled a Commonwealth force in England to attack Europe with its commitments to combat in other theatres. The CIGS, Churchill, Montgomery, Gen Eisenhower, Gen Marshall and anyone else who had their fingers in the military pie wanted to avoid allied casualties on the scale of WWI. Therefore, General Marshall's enthusiasm for a cross-channel invasion in 1942 had to be turned towards attacks made elsewhere. Look at what happened to inexperienced US troops at the Kasserine Pass and other places in North Africa. The poor buggers had to learn their trade somewhere other than where they could be thrown back into the sea.
I suppose the point of my huge ramble is the fact that Britain could not have won the war in Europe without the Americans, Canadians, French and the huge number of people from occupied countries who escaped to fight on. Britain could probably have won without American soldiers in North Africa but not without Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans and a dozen other nationalities. America could not have won in the Pacific if Britain had been occupied in 1940 because they might have been facing a massive European army and, more importantly, Navy made up of Germans, British and everybody else that the Nazis had steamrollered.
Britain would have had much more of a struggle in Burma without the Indian Army, West African troops and many other Commonwealth soldiers.
What it came down to was nations standing together in the face of evil. And I am so grateful to every soldier of every nationality that fought beside my relatives in Europe, North Africa and Burma, on the Atlantic convoy routes, the Russian convoy routes, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. My relatives served, and some died, in the Indian Army, the British Army, the RAF and the Royal Navy. My Uncle was rescued from a sunken destroyer by the USN. My mother-in-law was rescued from a bomb damaged bus by USAAF personnel. My Grandad died fighting beside Ghurkas in Burma having fought in France, North Africa and Crete. So take your petty squabbles over who won what with whom when, stick it up your arse and keep your ignorant gobs shut until you learn enough to make an intelligent comment.

Trenches were full of rats and dead bodies. They usually had mud floors and bodies would usually be put on top as an couple extra inches of cover.

Dimitri Wolfs man.. I really love hearing about that kind of stuff. Ww1 is a really interesting war, battlefield 1 got me interested. It's too bad that ww1 is kinda skipped over in school. I never learned a ton about it, only ww2.
