We love Math Mammoth! Truly a game changer in our homeschool. My child's confidence has grown so much. She did not do well with the spiral style math curriculum. We're were able to go slow to ensure mastery in some areas and fly through other chapters if she took to the concepts easily. We have used the program for 3 years. We used Maria's short free UA-cam videos for almost all the lessons. We watched them for 4a/4b and it really set the stage for my kid to do the worktext alone. I check work daily too. I want to make sure she doesn't move on until she has achieved mastery. One thing I always point out to people planning to use the curriculum... read ALL the notes like Niki said. Some people think there are too many questions. Maria says only do about half of the questions and you can go back for students that need more practice or review. I missed this our first year in the program and pushed for my daughter to do every question because I didn't read all the notes.

Thank you for this Review Nikki!
Your are one of my favorite homeschool moms on UA-cam. I appreciate your honesty in every review!
I use Math Mammoth and LOVE IT! It is certainly not perfect and I quit twice but came right back and it feels so wonderful to realize that you are AT HOME with your Math Curriculum, LOL! This is MM for us :)
As far as Drawbacks in our humble opinion:
I would say that the Times New Roman size 10 (or what it feels like it is size 10) for First to Third Graders especially, is a terrible choice. A lot of us complain bitterly about how visually overwhelming it is. This year I had a good idea and I printed it one sided so I could have room on the other page for problems. I didn't want to carry an extra notebook around the whole house for Math. So it has been wonderful to have all that space for problems because the curriculum does not make enough room for that, especially with Word Problems. So it is really overwhelming for us Visual learners and people with Dislexia. I think my 10 year old son and I have some Dislexia so I still have to read most things to him because of how crowded the pages are and the size of the font. He gets too overwhelmed.
When it comes to Teacher Involvement:
I know Cathy Duffy says the Parent Involvement is "Moderate" and I would say that is very true because you do not have to have manipulates with every lesson. They are helpful and I use them sometimes... since we come from Montessori and Singapore, but they are not strictly needed. This curriculum is super friendly for a chronically ill mom! I can't tell you how grateful I am for not having to bring a lot of manipulatives with every lesson! I have chronic pain and I just could not do that but MM still delivers an amazing lesson!
My involvement is Moderate because, my student is certainly not very Mathy. And Math Mammoth loves to tangle and retangle your child's brain when it presents any word problem. However, that is just how every Singapore Math curriculum is! And Math Mammoth is very similar to SM. My son cannot solve a lot of the word problems on his own. I have to help him figure it out. So... For us it is absolutely not independent. It might be for some bright kids who are pretty good readers but not kids with Dislexia. I have to be by my child almost every step of the way because of the tiny font and because of how challenging it is. I have to highlight key words a lot.
That said. We both still really, really love it! It isn't easy for a non mathy kid, but my son says he adores how it breaks down every concept to teach you all kinds of tricks to come to the same result and it lets you pick your favorite method.

@@jop4112 I am so glad for you and your homeschool!!! It is so good to see how, in the middle of our physical pain, we can still present such a great lesson! Thank God for Maria Miller and MM! 😊🙏🏼

This is the second video of yours that I've watched. I watch a lot of homeschool review videos. I find myself wondering why I didn't discover your channel before today. You are thorough, funny, and you give great tips. Thank you for this video. Can't wait to watch more.

You made me smile - Thumbs up for you! :D. After trying SOOO hard to like Math with Confidence, I'm switching to this for my behind 3rd grader, and to Masterbooks for a little while with my girl going into first. Math with Confidence was great in so many ways, but found myself so annoyed with all the physical stuff you have to deal with (index cards, pulling out random cards in the deck, etc) - It was just so much work, when I really just need to get to the point and get it over with, with our larger family.

Great review. Bith of my kids thrive with Math Mammoth. Weve used it for 3 years. The lessons build up nicely to buikd understanding and see relationships. My only drawback is every once in a while even I need a little more explanation for a word problem in order to help my children,BUT, the author has always answered any question i may have

We love Math Mammoth! It's so straight-forward and thorough. My son does really well with this approach, but I doubt my bright-colored-loving daughter will do as well with this. I just wish there was a more beautiful version of this type of curriculum. I think beauty really matters!
