'Don't Lecture Me About Jim Crow": Booker Slams Voter Suppression Targeting Minority Voters

- Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) delivered an impassioned speech on the Senate floor Wednesday amid a debate in the upper chambers on two voting rights bills, as GOP Senators claim voter suppression concerns are fabricated.
Cory record numbers of people voted in 2020 and your party won all the federal levels of power. So the suppressed people are who????
Your wisdom I wish were contagious. Great mind you obviously have. Kudos.
The people who’s access to vote is being restricted by RepubliQAn voting laws.

Why not open more spots to spread the voters out. Instead of 2 school gymnasiums make it 4? I'm black and the reason it's so hard to in hood is because there one place in the hood to vote at. Make more locations. A law isn't going to help.
Was thinking it was a lack of polling places. Simple fix really. Every voting districts population versus how many people it can process on voting day per polling station. Err on the side of having one more than needed problem solved. Make voting day a national holiday and we would have 95% of voters covered.
That is handled at the local level.
@@WarNoob755 then states need to get to work. Not the federal government. Am I wrong?

I live in Texas, and he's not lying one bit about the lines. The crazy thing is, I've asked friends all days (includes a couple that work for R-legislators at in the state leg, and they can't even explain the long lines. When I ask what their representatives responser would be, know one can answer. Hmmmm....???? Why is Booker's question about long lines so hard to answer?
It has to do with the concentration of populations. Cities generally have more concentrations of minorities. Yet, a higher percentage of minority voters vs white voters came out in the last election. Don't want to stand in line? Early vote ... oh, wait ... what?
@@_Mr.UA-cam Did you see only black people in the line you were in? Why a law that equally impact all races is racist? Texas has early voting, why didn’t you exercise that option? What’s the problem with waiting on line to vote? Does it justify a federal takeover of our elections?
Last question: I am a black man, with the same cognitive ability as a white man. So accepting this nonsense that voting laws are racists, aren’t we accepting the (subtle) notion that blacks are cognitively impaired or inferior to white people, therefore the electoral laws have to be so dumbed down for black people to find their way to the voting booths?

News flash Cory if you are in a predominantly black neighborhood the polling place is usually run by the same kind of people. I never walked into a Asian neighborhood and excepted to see Native Americans running the stores.
Minorities in Texas live in the most populated counties, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, etc. where you have millions of residents. That's where the long lines are. Why are republicans in Texas opposed to more polling places in more populated areas?
It's not the electoral workers who are responsible for how many polling places are open per capital per county. The state's secretary of state and corresponding county officials are. It's like you didn't here ONE WORD of the Senator's speech - or actually have any knowledge of the electoral reality of this nation.

Many towns and counties are segregated or mostly segregated. I grew up in a town and was 16 before I saw a black person in a home with a lawn to mow. All of the black people in my town/ county lived in the small “city”, not in the rural neighborhoods. Over the last 40 years the county has made a 20% change, but not much. I stood in line for 30 minutes to vote and not one black/ brown person working the polls or voting.
Not the whole country but several areas are segregated.
Another Spartacus moment
Booker? Anyways you're pretty funny, SNL should use that line, they need help these days!
He destroyed them. Exposed voter suppression too.
If lines are too long how about a bill to address that? It can be accomplished with or without voter ID and does not require the obvious insecurities of voting by mail and ballot harvesting.
This bill was never intended to address the issue of long lines.
Obvious insecurities of voting by mail? Please do explain what those are. Voting by mail is literally one of the safest ways to vote. The president does it, the military does it, and so do Americans living overseas. They could put forth a bill to address the long lines, but Republicans would just remove polling places again.

@@HazeOfWhearyWater “Universal” mail in voting has existed SUCCESSFULLY in several U.S. states for some time. 'Successfully' is a debatable characterization.
If individual states want to institute this then that is their constitutional prerogative. Not the Federal Government's. Some effectively single-party blue states (like Oregon and Washington) have adopted this, but most have only adopted it in the last year or so.
Merely having an example of something having been adopted somewhere geographically is not evidence that it is a good idea.
@@HazeOfWhearyWater Exactly why these new regressive voting restrictions in States based on falsehoods are bad in general. As for targeting so-called blue or red states, that is both an absurdity and counterproductive towards America’s interest as a country and I won’t engage in it. Since we do exist in a republic of “united” States, the Federal government does indeed own the right to exercise control of how federal elections for federal congressional seats and the Presidency are conducted. The States own how elections for state seats and governorships are conducted.
This is what it is Discrimination. These people are not being fair in the UNITED states

Tbh, I hear him on the wait lines and lack of polling locations. I am white so naturally I view this as discrimination on the poor[like myself] rather than about race. Ive looked through a bit on this voting rights bill and most of the things in it aren't about that. Voter id laws are divisive, the executive branch having control is divisive. Put the individual things up for a vote. Let's see if a congress person will put their name on the line saying they dont support shorter wait times.

Why do the cities with long voting lines not provide more polling locations? Those cities have Democrat mayors, but these senators blame it on systemic racism, when the obvious issue is horrible local leadership. Be mad at your mayor that is failing to provide resources to your people.
Perhaps the resource are being blocked by the governor. Aka the boss.
@@bsing2u perhaps, but all the voting ballots are issued out to the polling sites, that's how people vote. So that means the only reason there are long lines is because there are so many people assigned to go to one polling site. So the mayor has the ballots. The only other resources needed are volunteers and tents/public spaces to be set up. My grandma and a few neighbors would get to gether every voting cycle and set up a polling site for their neighborhood in East Los Angeles. They used a driveway, some folding tables and chairs. They were all volunteers and were trained by the city, just like all other polling sites. So if a mayor can't find volunteers, folding tables and chairs, then that's a truly horrible mayor. @@LasVegasCollectibles you are correct, especially your last line.
No issue with volunteers

However, the governor and Mayors of some states are removing locations and drop boxes and reducing voting hours. With that structure it creates limited places and long lines.
The reason that the 2020 election had a huge turnout of voters than any other election is because states made voting more accessible to vote by allowing more places, longer open hours, early voting and some states voting by mail due to the pandemic.
The fact that soooo many people voted during this election proved that if accessible people will actually vote vs procrastinsting.

Interestingly, the people that want you to only see the world through race themsleves care very little about race...how many "black" anchors that go on about race have "white" partners and live in predominately "white" neighborhoods? Mental gymnastics. I agree that Communists convincing people to only see this country through race and not Nation or Tribe is very destructive to the fiber of this Nation...it's their goal, and Communists like Booker should be shunned and booted out any political office.
Get some good candidates and I will care about voter suppression. Tom Cotton in 2024 and every year after that. PS cory booker is a four eyes
Since the facts are long voting lines are a problem, the new Georgia election law should be a good thing because it requires precincts with more than 2000 voters and which had wait times longer than an hour must either open another voting station, or add more staff, equipment or both to the existing station.
You obviously didn’t read all the provisions of the bill in Georgia.
@@vaughntrader2812 Actually, I did, that's why I know the provision to address long lines was in it. Did you not listen to Senator Booker's speech where he spent most of his time talking about the "facts" of long lines even singling out Georgia for those long lines?
No ID no voting. Period.
Maybe the lines are long and the times are long because either the polling locations were too small or a large number of voters are showing up. Nothing he said is valid and is misleading.
Why not, Spartacus? Maybe we should get Jussie's opinion on that.
LOOK AT HOW MUCH OF SOMEBODY ELSES TIME HE TOOK....
Booker doesn't know Jim Crow from Jim Beam.
I have to show my ID to buy certain cold meds but not to vote!
I always have to show my ID and I live in a predominately Black area. If it’s that easy where you live areas like that is the problem.
Assertions accompanied by numbers are not facts.
'They're removing polling places...' Yes, and they're being replaced by early voting in central locations and voters are permitted to vote in other precincts, and that caused a lot of problems because people showed up to vote wherever it was convenient. This was addressed during the Democratic Party primary in Texas.
Lastly, elections are administered by municipalities and counties. The efficiency of such operations are the responsibility of the government employees in those places. In nearly all cases where the predominant demographic is Black, these functions are managed by Democrats, and in 'blue states', it's Democrats all the way down.
Except they are backed the numbers and facts. Your “facts” are rejected by the very political party you’re defending.
It’s illegal to vote in others precincts and your votes will be ignored if you do so. The DNC specifically sued that law and the GOP and there conservative justice friends upheld it.
Your final point is also erroneous and the GOP itself rejects it. The GOP, especially the State Of Texas sued municipalities and frequently won. The GOP has deprived blue cities of election powers and given them to conservative state boards and the few powers the blue cities do have are heavily regulated.
He would like very much for you to fall for this propaganda
Seems like a lotta facts to me quite naturally it's propaganda to u who pushes it better than repukes
Booker give one bit of evidence to support your opinions
I live in a 70+% minority little city just south of Atlanta, GA., been voting at the same church since 1988. most years there are almost no voters there. We had a big line for 2008 when it took me about 45 minutes to vote, much smaller one in 2012, probably took me 20 min to vote that year. Lack of voter participation is our most serious problem. I live about three blocks from my polling place and often drive by....there are usually only a few cars in the lot. I've never seen anyone handing out water or seen water anywhere in the vicinity. Neither side in this debate reflects our reality.
speak for yourself only...not the entire experience
The little cities aren't the problems. It is the larger cities with the most voters. If the population is small you won't have the longer lines. The reality is people did stand in line for up to 10 hours. That should not be happening. Their solution is less drop boxes, less mail in and less polling places. How is that helping. Who has time to cheat? Some can barely get in one vote. They are working hard to solve a problem that doesn't exist.
@@dianabaskin1944 "less drop boxes, less mail in and less polling places"
Are there "only whites" drop boxes that black ppl. are not allowed to use? Is mail in option reserved for white ppl. only? Surely that would be illegal. Are numbers of polling places limited in certain areas? Based on population structure?
I understand that one option can have different outcome /attendence but disparity is not =discrimination. As long as rules ARE the same for everybody you should expand -improve in other areas.
@@dianabaskin1944 Maybe. But my city is just down the road from the Atlanta border, so basically it's south Atlanta. North Atlanta did have lines. It's much whiter up there.
Have family down near Atlanta in Fulton Cty. They said it took hours for them to vote.
This is somewhat true , but not limited to blacks and hispanic. Depending on when you get there. I have seen it in Oklahoma with my own eyes. I went to vote two years in a row and there were at least 75 blacks and 30 Hispanics ahead of me and i am white. I figured they had been there for at least a couple of hours and i couldn't stand in one place for that long so i just left. It's not like white people rush up and push the blacks and hispanics out of the way and take their place. And they absolutely do not form lines of different races. Whoever put these truths out were not in Oklahoma , i can tell you that much because niether race would allow that , besides why would one person think they shouldn't have to go to the back of the line. You always do whether it be at the store , the doctor or any other facility. Disabled , i agree , should have a better way of voting and of course the elderly regardless of their race. Don't think for one second that if a elderly person came up and i could secure them quickly getting in line ahead , i would.
He wouldn’t compare economics to 1950’s cause blacks had more economic power before the democrats subverted the focus to government welfare
Who could be against what Booker said here? Why?
those who stand for Voter Suppression and seem to have comments that are reflective of this in this comment section
Easier to vote? How about instead we require voters to choose the platform bullets vs. choosing a candidate at all? Too many people vote D or R and never bother to even learn the names of candidates much less learn what they are voting for. Case in point DA in NYC RAN on being soft on crime and then the people that voted for him were shocked when he got in office and said he'd be soft on crime.
Assuming it's true that there is a 10 hr. wait to vote as was stated, can anyone tell me WHY? Is it a not enough polling stations/ too many voters in that district issue? A wait time between goin into voter booth issue? It just dosent make sense to me. I've voted every election since I was 18 and in some heavily populated areas. Never come close to 10 hrs. So WHY? WHAT needs fixing? Ya can't just say "racism"...
America needs better than appeals to emotion.
booker the guy who couldn’t manage to hit 1% in his presidency bid
Jersey deserves better than this joker
So, its only 19 states that have this issue? I wonder how big those poling places are that people had to wait for 6hrs. Dont those polling places employ workers from the surrounding community? maybe they don't have enough people to watch? as far as Voter ID, what state was it that will only take a 2yr ID and what type of ID was it?
I saw on twitter that he did an excellent job pointing things out, I will have to find that person, their standard is pretty low.
You don't listen. You clearly don't read well either. 19 GOP-led states AT THIS TIME have passed stricter voting bills since the 2020 election, after Trump pushed the Big Lie and let those states claim "election security." They are 100s of proposed GOP-led ones, that still look to suppress votes, that are battling 100s of Dem laws that propose to keep or open up access following 2020.
He's lying 🤥 🤧 🙄
Got a deal for ya...let's make sure we provide voting locations per capita, and require an ID. Everyone gets a w.
The senate dark money bought.
I didn't know Obama's anger management spokesperson was a senator.
Bs.
In 2022 these comments are sad, but not surprising.
The opposition to student voting is reasonable. Students come into college towns for 8 months of the year and 4 years of their lives and are voting in local elections for an area they haven't lived, an area they won't stay, can't name two long term residents, does that make sense?
If this is true, you would have a very strong legal case.
Shelby v holder gutted the voter rights act. Immediately after that decision polling stations in minority communities got reduced by 30-40% just facts. Long lines = Less participation
@The Most Awesomest Chris just like California allows for widespread ballot harvesting and non-citizens to vote in municipal elections Alabama (and other states) can set the parameters so far as it doesn't violate the law.
