Same
I like pc
PS1 PC Sega Saturn
Wow, never seen or heard of the PC version before. Gorgeous. Definitely the winner here.
I’m told that the 3DO version used 16-bit color assets that had to be converted to 256 colors for PC. But it’s hard to tell and the resolution and frame rate advantage of the PC puts it head and shoulders above the rest.
3DO assets where cool in that the color palette could be different for each asset. So you could have 16, 64, 256, 4096 etc color assets all intermingled to make the most of the available memory. This was a problem when it came to porting to other platforms as they couldn't do this. Thus some assets had to be made larger or reduced down to all fit into a 256/512 color space.
Another complication was that many 3DO titles streamed in assets on the fly thanks to its multitasking OS, this had to be rebuilt on the Ps1/Saturn versions.
Was playing this on the 3DO last night! 😎
You can overclock with the 4DO emulator and it's smooth. I used to prefer the PC version until I discovered that. I like the 3DO ingame music a little better than the PC because it has the proper soundfont!
@@PlasticCogLiquid I didn't know about the overclocking. That's worth a try!
1. PC by a mile
2. Sega Saturn. This type of 3D game with a mostly flat surface was perfect for the Saturn
3. PS1 but barely
4. 3DO
@@gundstaff PC can have multiplayer lan and virtual lan. Big win and also all the music.
The difference is subtle but side by side you can see it! PC doesn't have transparent shadows or the animated 3D clouds. Also I think the 3DO original had a horizon-fading effect
Among the console versions:
1) Saturn
2) PS1
3) 3DO
PC is better than all 3.
@@pizzaparkerhotdogmaguire3225 yes, but the PC is not a console, which is what james is comparing there.
A curiosity: the Playstation 1 Road Rash contains only one video clip and the American version has only the "Duel" clip and the European version contains only the Jessie clip.
Uma curiosidade: o Road Rash de Playstation 1 contém apenas um video clip sendo que a versão americana tem o apenas o clip "Duel" e a versão Europa contém apenas o clip Jessie.
Fondly remember the PC version. I recently set up RetroArch, and it looks like the Saturn version is the way to go for that.
thanks for this comment, i just got a steam deck and i was specifically looking here to figure this out since I don't want to deal with installing a PC version. lol
It's not Panasonic 3DO... It's only 3DO
set up the PS1 version on my R35S and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. PC version is crisp but you can make out the difference between the environment and the static background. In the PS version the shadows are more subtle and the 3d passing environment blends well with background image which has moving clouds. I don't feel nostalgic. I never stopped playing 'old titles' so this so this is something I enjoy till date seamlessly 🤓
Is possible to play it in Enhanced resolution on R35S?
@@freezersk not possible. The hardware isn't a lot to take home about, and the display isn't that great, but that's like the very resolution retro games work on. So it works pretty fine for me with whatever resolution it works in.
Is it just me or does the saturn version have a smoother frame rate?
I like the PC version.
The pc version wins for overall best experience. However, the PC port has some limitations that were done better on ps1 and 3DO:
1. The sky clouds are not in 3D space and are completely static textures.
2. No fog at distant.
3. No environmental lighting, including tunnel shadows.
4. Bike shadows are not transparent.
- In race soundtracks are shuffled compared to console versions.
- Rat bikes and super bikes are shuffled compared to console versions. Depending on what colors of bikes you prefer, you will either like it or hate it.
The framerate on 3DO is abysmal and isn't really enjoyable. Especially in later level where faster bikes and aggressive AI needs smooth and faster input response. The framerate on ps1 and saturn are not that great either but are serviceable. However, using overclock on emulators, you can achieve pc port equivalent performance. That's a viable option if you want play the console versions.
Audio sounds so rough and distorted on consoles. However, the npc voices are more clear on consoles. However, the low npc voice seems to be an issue on pc port while playing on modern hardware. The npc sounds were clearly audible back when I was playing it on my old pc from 1999. I have no idea how to fix the audio.
Now, as for why you might want to play the pc version:
1. The bike sprites are noticeably higher resolution compared to all other console versions. This is too noticeable and unless you are sitting far away from a screen, the bikes look blurry and significantly worse compared to pc. Yes, even when hooked up on a CRT tv compared to the pc version hooked up on a CRT tv as well.
2. The audio sounds less ear rapey. There is less distortion but the in race soundtracks sound a bit more bassy and different as a result. Which one you prefer will depend on your tastes.
3. Smooth 60 FPS by default and controls feel very responsive.
4. Better control schemes and you can remap your controls. This is very crucial and is one of the reasons why I keep playing the pc port. Playing the ps1 port felt like a pain in the ass because of how the backhand attack is tied to Circle+dpad up button. The acceleration button is tied to Cross button. Meaning, if you hold your gamepad in a normal way, you can't do backhand attacks without letting go of the acceleration button. You will slow down as a result unless you hold your gamepad in an uncomfortable way to have both thumb and index fingers on face buttons.
Backhand and kick attacks increases your bike speed and it becomes very crucial on later levels and if you want to keep up with slower bikes. The kicks will slightly increase speed, and backhand attacks will significantly raise speed to a point where if you keep playing aggressively, you can actually win race with bikes that are too slow for that level otherwise. Regular swing attacks dont increase speed which is tied to l2 and is reachable without letting go of acceleration button.
-Also not that important, but I couldn't get analog steering on ps1 port. Using analog sticks would just behave as digital input instead. On the pc port, you can do analog steering, however, it is not that important since tapping the dpad or arrow keys can provide fine movements.
5. Letting you keep multiple saves. You can have all big game players with all bikes as separate saves. Really saves time makes the experience more pleasant.
If you're playing on modern larger screens or are playing on a monitor, you will like the pc port anyway just for the significantly higher res bike sprites. Looks so clear. If you are playing on a retro setup and sitting very far from a TV, or if you are playing on a phone with small screen, you wont be bothered by the low res bike sprites and can play the ps1/3do ports.

Eu tive a do Saturn, PC e hoje jogo a versão Playstation no meu PSP
Interesting that the PC version has the worst backgrounds. Just a static image compared to every other version that has moving clouds.
1st PC
2nd Saturn
3rd Playstation
Saturn always better than ps1.
only when it comes to 2D. PS1 was far more capable with complex 3D games
On the thumbnail the PS1- and Saturnversions are swapped.
For consoles, ps1 version for me, clearly, even if it runs a bit worse than the saturn version, it has better contrast, better shadows (player, NPCs, alleys...), the background draws properly (saturn looks disconnected, like other games using VDP2 for backgrounds), the FMVs are higher quality, the road looks less detailed, more plain...
FEW people know but Saturn Doesnt have a 3D GPU! It has 2 2D GPU! The graphics is not made by polygons, but the old 'tyles' 2D architeture. This is why Saturn 3D is strange and unrealistic.
What? Saturn clearly uses polygon
all old game pc winner
Holy Shit! I thought 3DO was cutting edge and Road Rash was some Kind of an Killer App. But that Framerate is AWEFUL! Especially if you play an very fast Game like this
These versions didn't compete with each other, 3DO Road Rash came out a year or two before the others, it competed with Mega Drive Road Rash (basically it was released between Road Rash 2 and Road Rash 3, then the PS1 version came out a year later, then 6 months after the PS1 version the PC and Saturn versions arrive IIRC).
The frame rate is the same for the Saturn and PlayStation. What are you talking about? The 3DO version looks better than the PlayStation. So does the Saturn.
@@chelious1973 3do version is great but in terms of framerate, it's not that good so yeah ps1 is better than 3do version
@@sridrawings4510. Did you play both? How do you know exactly?
@@chelious1973 cuz by playing it : )
Now compare all the cut scenes ;)
3do é o 3do ❤❤❤❤❤❤
3do concerteza. o primeiro e o melhor pra mim.
Agreed
pc and ps1
Sega Saturn perfect fremerat
Playstation because dark in race soundtrack
Windows > Saturn > PlayStation > 3DO
3DO has the best sky and moving cloud effects. PC's sky doesn't even move and looks particularly ugly textured.
Es muy buen juego

Lmao even 3DO us better than Saturn! What a piece of sheet Saturn was XD
Look better mate the Saturn version is superior from every console.
Saturn is the worst version
3DO is the worst. People say it's the best because of nostalgia or trying to look cool by knowing about the less popular system.
3DO's lower (way lower) frame rate already puts it dead last even if it was the first one released.
