My grandmother raised her kids with the same mentally. "Just because we are poor doesn't mean we have to look sloppy" and my mother passed this down to her kids as well. I think, especially as latinos being raised in low-income communities, our appearance is important to lower the already preconceived notions people will have about us. It is an important lesson I still carry on till this day.

I think alot Puerto Rican parents just have a hard time breaking the cycle depending what was the struggle in the family, now that I'm older with kids I understand my parents more and I'm trying my hardest with my daughters to do everything I wish my parents did because I see now why they didn't always understand me and I didn't understand them, my siblings and I were always told to not run around making babies and if we like nice things to work hard we had lots of conversation but you really don't understand until you go through some things.
I love your mom I wish I had one like that!! There’s nothing like respect between a mother and daughter and that’s something you must earn mutually but starts with moms.
Please let your mother talk more w/out interruption. Let her tell her stories. We want to hear her wisdom.

Your grandma and mom remind me so much of my ma . She will figure things out no matter what the budget is . Since we were very young she always made sure all of us were bathed , well dressed and had everything we needed no matter our economic troubles . Hi A. This episode moved me deeply. My mom came from PR in the early 50’s. She also was a single parent with 4 children. We lived en el Barrio (Spanish Harlem). She didn’t get much schooling and she had to lean on public assistance as well. I grew up with the same values. We never went to bed hungry, are lights and electricity were never shut off. She was my role model and it’s what I taught my daughters.

Love this so much. I grew up with a single mom and she could stretch a dollar. Learned so much from her and she saved me from making financial mistakes as I went to college.
My mom was diagnosed with dementia and I wishhhh I wishhhhh I can have a conversation with her and go out with her and cook with her....love your mothers and talk to them on the daily. It’s a blessing! Gd bless all the mothers and grandmothers

In respond to the importance of appearance is a true fact. My husband recently commented that he admires how I make it a point to always look nice when leaving the home. His belief is that people will treat you based on how you look. If you look sloppy than people will interpret that you don't care attitude. Hardship makes you strong and focus your attention on God.

Love this video ❤❤ Being a parent is hard. I take the best things I got from mine, and I'm trying to teach those to my kids, along with some others that maybe my parents didn't teach me, but I've learned along the way.
I've seen some people compare their parents to others and then blame their parents for whatever they didn't teach them or what not. And then use it as an excuse to not do better. I rather focus on what I can improve, than dwell in the past and stay there.

My Puerto Rican mother was the most influential person in my life! Mom was Honest she was a saver, responsible . She was a hard worker. She supported our family. She was my best friend. My greatest loss is when my mother passed a few years ago.

I’m the same age as A and unfortunately I wasn’t taught to be financially independent as a woman. My mom was a hard worker for sure though. The best thing I ever did for myself was start a business. It’s a crazy feeling to not live paycheck to paycheck anymore and actually seeing my savings and investments grow. Great episode! 👏

My dad was the same.. We always went on vacation once a year and we always had what we needed and he was second generation American citizen so I see so many similarities between her & my dad. His legacy came from Barbados. My dad went to school to be a painter and then when was born he had 3 jobs but the main one I knew was he did janitor service while we were young overnight and then be able to support us going to school and then work while supporting my mom while she was in school.
