~~~ Lyrics ~~~
Eg var meg så ven og fager ei møy
Med stimoder vond, mi moder ho døy
Ho skapte meg om til eit svær og ei nål
Og sende meg av ti kongens gård
Og vreida mi stimoder kjende mest
Når alle dei gillaste lika meg best
Ho gav meg ein ham som ulve grå
Ho svor meg til einsam i skogjen gå
Og aldri blir eg heil og god
Før eg fær drukkje min broders blod
~~~ Lyrics in English ~~~
I was a very fine and beautiful maiden
With an evil stepmother. My mother had died.
She transformed me into a sword and a needle
And sent me off to the King’s estate.
The wrath of my stepmother grew
When all the fine people loved me most.
She gave me the hide of a grey wolf
And forced me to go into the woods alone.
And I would never be whole and good
Before I had drunk of my brother’s blood.

Thank you si nice ! Norway Gåte Ulveham ,Many people are not aware of what she actually sings, which in my opinion is a cruel text from the old days. And i am from Norway ! The text copied from newspaper today:
She summarizes "Ulveham", based on an old medieval ballad, as the story of an evil stepmother who casts a curse on her stepdaughter - who turns into a wolf running in the forest forever. She only loses her wolf's hide if she drinks her own brother's blood.
"There will be a kind of happy - but cruel - ending when she meets the stepmother on horseback in the forest, throws herself at her, rips out her heart and drinks the blood. Because the stepmother is pregnant with her brother - thereby the curse is lifted.
This is so underrated...

@@hlorii6598only 2-3 of her words are archaic (1800’s) the rest is straight up dialectal nynorsk
For those who doesnt understand what the song is about:
Gåte bases their music on traditional music, vocal folk music with texts from very old times. "Ulveham" is based on a text from the Middle Ages. The song is a story of a young maiden that undergoes a series of injustices, but by upholding justice and goodness, even in the toughest trials, she triumphs over evil forces and breaks the curse placed upon her.
A stepmother is very jealous of her stepdaughter who everyone loves and thinks is very beautiful, so the stepmother tries to turn her into different things by casting a spell on her….a needle, a knife, a sword. Whatever she turns her stepdaughter into, people still like it, so in the end she casts a wolf spell on her and banishes her into the forest, and the only way she can get out of the bewitchment is to drink her brother's blood. Thats how the stories were from that time. Later, the evil stepmother goes into the forests and meets the wolf (stepdaughter) and the wolf rips out the heart of the stepmother and eats it, and then it turns out that the stepmother was pregnant with her half-brother, so she drinks her brother's blood and becomes free from the spell.
It is simply about free yourself from someone who has power over you, and you do it on your own terms.
The way she sings her "shouting notes" is from traditional Norwegian folk music and can be described as some kind of calling sound «lokking», a sound which is supposed to reach far in nature (forest or mountain) so it needs to be loud. Its kind of a Scandinavian yodling-sound used also to call for a herd (sheep, cows etc) but also a calling sound used in folk tradition or by super natural beings like the «Huldra» to «trick» humans and animals to appear in the forest/mountains.
Wow, ancient tales are so brutal and sophisticated in their brutality. But it was super interesting to know. Thank you for the explanation. The song sounds different to me after knowing this.
Thanks for that context! I think I love this song even more now
probably the most detailed, sensible and interesting Eurovision Song Contest-related comment I've read anywhere (and believe you me I've read a few)
I recognized the story from the Swedish band "Garmarna" and their song "Vedergällningen" from the 1990s. Only in that story it is a young man, rather than a maiden who is put under the spell by the evil stepmother. After drinking his brother's blood he turns into a "Knight, bold and good."
As an American, it hurts that I can't vote for this.. it goes so hard and is so beautiful. The fact that they use old Norwegian poems and fables as the basis for their songs is just chef's kiss. Norway should be proud of their contribution this year for sure. I hope they win.
You actually can! We were able to vote last year because of the “the rest of world” voting, so I’m pretty sure we’ll be able to this year!

I still pinch my arm from time to time to confirm I'm not dreaming, having Gåte represent Norway is like having Muse represent UK.
Just imagine... 🖤🤘🤘
Or BMTH…… (which would be a dream ngl 🖤)
Muse doesn't represent the UK! We have 7+ languages and only one 1 is ever represented: English.
Which btw is the invader language. Welsh, Irish, Scottish, Manx, Cornish and Irish are the original languages.
So, being represented by Muse is once again England representing the nations 🫣😓😤 utter bullshit
@@LumiSisuSusi I think what Vinterloft is meaning is that this year we are sending an established and experienced music group. Often we in Norway send artists who are young and have not given out many albums before. I was at Gåte concert when I was in my teens, now I am in my 30s. When it comes to language and history of suppression, we have some languages that are not Norwegian too. Multiple Sami languages, Kvensk and I think the Norwegian rom have a language too. Historically for a long time in example the Sami people were suppressed and mistreated by the government. Their kids were forced to boarding schools where they were not allowed to talk their mother tongue Sami language. So today many Sami families can not speak Sami language. Luckily we have got some Sami language and traditional music Joik in Eurovision. In example in a part of the 2019 song Spirit in the sky by Keiino. Have the UK some time sent artists singing in other languages than standard English or some musical traditions not from England?
@@HappyFennec from what I'm aware the UK has always participated via the medium of English. In 1969 they sent Lulu a Scottish singer who won in a 4 way tie. But asside from Lulu it appears that mostly the UK nationsnare always represented by English people. It's a shame as the counties which make up the UK we have such rich cultures and beautiful ancient languages. I live in Finland now and I'm learning Finnish, I'm really interested in the Sámi way of life and culture.

@@valo2872 The text material they based the lyrics of this song on is a centuries old medieval ballad that was written down in many different versions across Telemark in the mid 1800s. It's written in a mixture of early landsmål (nynorsk) and the dialect of the (source) singers. Since Gåte had to rewrite the story in their own words for Eurovision, the language is a bit more modern, and reads like a type of nynorsk. A lot of the words are more archaic ones that are not in use anymore outside of old fairytales, folklore and traditional music, and they've probably also let some influence in from their Trønder dialect, although that's not really noticible. These new lyrics I can understand completely fine, and they feel really close/natural to my dialect, even though I'm from a lot longer north than Telemark.
I don't know if this answered your question, but I don't know if I have a more succinct answer to give you 😅
@@sugarinmywounds Tusen takk for det svaret!
Yes, it gave me a better understanding of the language. So nice that they've woven in the old with the more modern - and that they use Nynorsk. I asked because there are so many small dialects in Sweden and Norway that have a lot in common and that use old grammar and words. Beautiful dialects that you hear spoken less and less..
And I like that you can hear the "Kulning"s special expression in her singing.
With each new listen to this song, Ulveham is getting closer to being my favorite Eurovision song of all time, and I'm incredibly happy about it. 12 points from Ukraine 🇺🇦❤🇧🇻
I also had the same experience, I had to listen to it a few times before I heard how beautiful it was. So it kinda sucks that it's one of the last ones to performe in Eurovision. (Last part of the second semi final)
Love from Norway to Ukraine🇳🇴❤🇺🇦
After like 5 listens, I'm sure that for me this is the best song I have ever heard that has been sent to Eurovision. I can't explain it, this is authentic, primal even, this is a definition of music.
@@MrCamilla 2nd part of of 2nd semi final is usually the best place to be in. But don't worry this will qualify 100% !
@@ThaGamingMisfit Awesome! I just assumed the earlier the better so that's great!
Im so sorry but Norway must win this year. Her voice like an angel, folk with rock, sadness and joy, esthetic, visuals, norwegian language... yes Norway, you did a winner song ❤❤❤️
Norway! Thank you so much for this masterpiece! Listening for 3 days straight and still I cant get enough. This is real ART. Both the song and the perfomance. I have sent it to my friends and will google how to vote on eurovision to vote for you. Sending lots of love!
Thanks a lot❤
Thanks from Norway❤
@@erithionthis is sung in dialectal nynorsk, not old Norse. Old Norse is almost identical to Icelandic, which isn’t intelligible to modern day Norwegians. This is dialectal Nynorsk and should be understandable to Norwegian when they see the lyrics written down.

I can't recall where I drew this from. It was years ago. Indeed, having checked 'kara tu omna', for example, I see people mention Nordmøre and Trøndersk. While in case of Ulveham even my B1 level in Bokmål is sufficient for some basic comprehension. On the other hand, the difference in pronunciation with Icelandic is apparent even to my Ukrainian ear, never mind the written text. Checked out the lyrics of an Icelandic band Rökkurró that I like. In their Flugdrekar and Sólin Mun Skína I barely understood a couple of words, except pronouns/particles. So yep, du har rett!
Thanks for clarification. You are Norwegian, I presume. Let me say that your language is beautiful! A big fan of Norwegian and glad that Eurovision will hear it. I'll be rooting for Gaate. Especially since I don't like our entry this year.
Thank you Norway for choosing GÅTE with Ulveham ❤ I was rooting for them a lot❤❤🎉
12 points from Poland 💞
I love this song and I don't understand the language, I don't even need to, it's telling me a story and a feeling, I think that's incredible, Norway is being underestimated, for me everything is here for a Eurovision winner.
The best song from Norway in recent years, shivers all over my body. Come thru Norway!! 🏆🇳🇴
There’s something so hauntingly ancient and violently ethereal in the song! Like it’s a piece of some bigger soundscape from the mysterious woods🌲✨ Heja norge! 12p fra Finland🇫🇮🇳🇴🤘
Kiitos Suomi Norjasta 😎
I needed to see which song defeated KEiiNO, and... totally speechless! I think we already have the winner of ESC 2024 🤩.

Norway is giving us a total-immersion experience! Ethnicity, culture, marvelous lyrics, a meaningful back-story, and a deep control in the stage. Listening to this makes you feel relieved and free. It's like if you're taking advantage over your shadows. It's like overcoming all those moments of darkness to become a powerful master!
I see you in the top 3, Gåte, at least! 12 points to Norway!

At first i was not sure about this, but her voice is so mesmerizing. Since then it is one of my top favourites. Hope it gets points on mass! Good Job, Norway!
I'm so f*ckin obsessed with this one!
Me too! I just can’t get enough of this song ❤❤❤
At every Eurovision, I have only one certainty: that I will find myself rooting for a Scandinavian song 🥹🫂 I love how this group manages to blend typically Nordic sounds and atmospheres with powerful metal sounds. When I listen to this song, I perceive the majesty of the nature that is an integral part of Norway, and I imagine the Norse gods that are deeply connected with it... 12 points from Italy! 🎉
Stunning. It's already a full package ready for Eurovision, where I think it's gonna do big things. Thank you Norway!
Her voice is incredible! Good luck from Finland 🇫🇮❤
Ohh, deliciously beautiful Finland!
What a masterpiece, this is what Europe should really appreciate and take to number 1, greetings and good luck from Spain 🇪🇦❤🇧🇻
