This one was a fun medical/mystery/mad scientist film, themed around blood transfusions, and I have to admit, this was one of the most interesting roles I've ever seen Humphrey Bogart in. I get to that, but basically here's the film summary.
Reporter Walter Garrett [Wayne Morris] goes to meet with the famous Angela Merrova (Lya Lys) who is just chilling out with her pet monkey, you know, Michael Jackson style I guess. A mysterious hand grabs her from behind. Walter arrives and finds her dead, and he calls back to the editor to tell him. Detectives show up but discover that the body is now missing.
what happened to it? Back at the office, Walter is let go by his boss because, lo and behold, Merrova is alive and sitting there! And is suing the paper, and so in the hotel. So poor Walter gets the boot.
He meets up with a doctor friend and tells his story. Doctor Mike Rhodes is played by Dennis Morgan, who I recently watched in Christmas in Connecticut with Barbara Stanwyck. A great movie by the way.
When Walt explains to him that found Merrova stabbed, with a wound near the heart, Mike says that she should have died of blood loss. The body had been all white, but where was the blood? Hmmm.
Mike says he will speak to Doctor Flegg [John Litel], who is more of an expert of blood. But meanwhile, Mike has other issues: ironically, there's supposed to be a blood transplant for the surgery that morning, but the donor hasn't shown up. However, Nurse Joan Vance [Rosemary Lane] is the right type and offersto help. The procedure is a success, and after, Mark talks to Dr. Flegg about if it's possible to survive being stabbed near the heart. Such foolishness! "Tell him to change his brand of liquor!" har har. But when Mark walks out, Dr. Flegg gives a suspicious look. Hmmm... check out the movie to see how things unfold.
Supposedly this movie loosely "follows" the 1932 film "Doctor X", so I need to add that to my list.
But for all the silliness, the production was good, and I liked the direction of Vincent Sherman that did a great job with the mysterious lighting in the labs and so on. This black and white looks great, but, as my few fans probably know, I'm just a big fan of black and white cinema to begin with.

I really like this, both for seeing Bogie in a different type of role and just because I love horror and mystery movies from this period.

Yeah, this was definitely a Bogart role in which he's completely different than I've ever seen him before.

Granted this wasn't the sort of role Bogart was known for but I have a saying, if you want to see how good an actor is don't just watch their best films, watch their worst. And in this movie Bogart steals the show playing a character he never plays.

😂 The actor who played the undertaker also played the crazy drunk in “Them”, the giant ant sci-fi of 1953, also from Warner Brothers

The back story on this is very interesting. For such a seemingly B movie the DVD commentary track has Vincent Sherman. To really appreciate all the Dr. X iterations you have watch the two strip technicolor original from 1932 in all the glorious greens and oranges.

I just found a copy of Doctor X and hope to watch and review it soon. From what I've heard it's a real trippy film.

@@OldMovieRob Trippy? Perhaps on a first time atavistic visceral level. Once you know the backstory, recognize the actors and see that M. Curtiz Directed, the trip becomes cerebral. I've watched this movie numberless times(at least 300 viewings). The DVD commentary track is very good, very informative until you realize MacQueen is reading from a script.

@@jackasswhiskyandpintobeans9344 I think the biggest challenge for me here was seeing Bogart in what felt like a very non-Bogart role, and as much as I enjoyed the narrative that was something I could never fully get around. But I might give this a re-watch down the road, once I get caught up with the other hundred or so films on my list to watch.

Do you ever get copyright strikes on your vids. The only reason why I ask is because I've been telling people to review classic movies.

    • @OldMovieRob
      @OldMovieRob  3 роки тому +3

CONSTANTLY! Actually, l get "copyright claim" warnings for using too long of a segment and I have to go back to the drawing board and trim segments out. Reviews I do with stills, and no video footage, never get claims though

“Doctor X” (1932) is worthwhile, but avoid the colorized version, it’s a mess. The two films are totally unrelated despite the title of the Bogart outing. The first Doctor X is Dr. Jerry Xavier (Lionel Atwill playing a character named Jerry is funny in itself.) who is a heroic medical detective, while Humphrey Bogart’s vampire is Dr. Maurice Xavier, alias Marshall Quesne. I think the notion of the 1939 movie being a sequel to “Doctor X” was created by the Warner Bros. promotion department and then fed to the press. There’s another oddity about this movie that strongly hints of promo department sensationalism, the normal legal boilerplate about the film being a work of fiction and any resemblance to any person yadda yadda yadda… is put right up front before the WB studio badge or the title card in letters as tall as the frame allows. Very bizarre.
