The soul from mole hills would have been great for your planters or saved as compost, alternative use just rake it into the grass.

Also great for adding to soil for cordon tomatoes which you can easily grow in your greenhouse.

That wee tree next to the leylandi is a very old Kilmarnock Willow. A dwarf form of willow tree. In the spring it will be covered in pussy willow and new leaves. It is a weeping willow. They are lovely 😊

I’ve just discovered a New Life in the Highlands. I had an Old Life in the Highlands where I was born and brought up. I am now happily retired and live in the glorious sunshine of the Algarve. Your vlogs though - talk about nostalgia. I love it. The feeling of being so cold I thought my fingers had dropped off and the race to sit nearest the radiator in the classroom which was a complete waste of time as it never gave out enough heat to thaw a thumb never mind a whole hand. However the cold withstanding, my heart is definitely still in the Highlands so thank you very much for bringing me home xxxx

The low clipped tree could be a wisteria tree? What a great property. The herb garden is actually a cold frame and you can grow fresh lettuces in that. Greenhouse would be perfect for tomatoes and certainly in the springtime for seedlings. The big bird house is for Martins, who like to nest together a la condominiums!

    • @MotorhomeMums

Hi Kath & Sue lovely tour of your ranch 😁
You can start your seedlings off in the greenhouse and then transfer them to the cold frame (herb garden) before planting out
Start with something small in the spring / summer like tomatoes you don’t need to buy seeds just use the shop bought tomatoes scrape out some seeds and dry them ready for planting 😁
You work great together as a team more Sue air time & Fudge🐾😁
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Good morning! We are new subscribers after seeing you on Escape to the Country.
We have now watched 2 episodes and are really enjoying the content.
As we live in South Africa we cannot advise on planting as our climate is very different but I have some advice for you …. use the soil from the molehills in your garden beds , pots and even lawn dressing where you may have bad patches on the lawnIt is usually very good topsoil.
    Your new home is gorgeous!.

Really enjoying your videos. Found them after watching your episode of ETTC and youtube suggested one of your videos. I love the workspace you have. Maybe the previous owner would be interested in teaching you some carpentry skills in exchange for use of the work space - he may be wishing he had more room for projects.
As for what to do with the greenhouse - search youtube for Charles Dowding. He's in Somerset and has an excellent gardening channel on youtube. You could use the greenhouse initially just for a small container garden inside, but you may get the bug and find yourself doing more! He can teach you everything you need to know about making compost - you can compost all your food waste (minus meat scraps and dairy) and use it to enrich your soil. He has been perfecting a no-dig approach since the 1980s which works exceptionally well and saves a lot of the backbreaking work.

    • @MotorhomeMums
      @MotorhomeMums  Місяць тому

Thank you so much. I’ll look him up as that sounds like the perfect starting point for us novice gardeners. As for the workspace, the previous owner has popped back a few times he is a lovely man and has given me tips already. Sue dreads it as he suggests new tools I ‘need’. 😂 we are in league together to kit out the workshop. He is very well known around this area and respected for his skillls, although now retired, so I’m hoping some of that rubs off. 🙏🤗❤️

Just a thought - I don’t know much about the Scottish climate as I live in West Wales which has fairly mild but very wet weather! If there’s a local gardening club near you that might be a good place to get to know about what grows best in your area. You’ll often find the members sell their surplus plants too, or swap them!

@MotorhomeMums Your welcome. My husband and I spent many happy days in the Cairngorms, starting with skiing in the 70's with Karl Fuchs who started the whole skiing thing off, then when we got older it was golf (husband) and me fly fishing. Half the world’s population of moles lived in my yard, once upon a time. We tried everything to get rid of them, to no avail. An elderly gentleman told me the method he used was this… Moles eat grubs, kill the grubs and the moles move on. My husband went to the garden store and bought grub killer and spread it around… sure enough, the moles disappeared and never returned. 🕺🏻💃🏻 True story!

Yes everyone who commented about the “mole hill soil” is correct, lovely stuff to put back in your borders and/or your planters. Tomatoes would be great for your greenhouse, a few plants 🌱 bought or grown by you from seed, maybe Gardeners Delight, cherry sized tomatoes 🍅 if you don’t like tomatoes many young and delicate plants benefit from the protection of a greenhouse. ❤

Maybe you and Sue could join a gardening club Kath..your green house..keep the door shut to keep the heat in. You could easily grow lettuce, silverbeet, tomatoes, capsicums, peas, beans depending on the season..just follow the instructions on the packets. That herb garden looks a bit like a worm farm to me, especially with the bits of poly pipes..might be wrong there too as I live in Western Australia..do you know definately that its a herb garden ? Live and learn ladies..as you know you're never too old to learn something new 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🙂minus 8°C..lovely..I used to garden in Tasmania at that temp...enjoyed it more than the 40°C these days in Western Australia..take care on those frozen tracks Kath have you a hiking pole?

Get some spring bulbs and put into the planters now for some colour in the spring, then take it slowly with spring summer planting bedding flowers, if you want to try some veg in the green house wait till June and plant some easy veg , use this first year to watch the garden and see what comes up etc and give your time to plan for the year after.

Your hedges look like conifers, you need to ensure when you trim them don’t cut into the brown they won’t re green, but you do need to keep them in check during the growing season they can get to large if left

Beautiful garden. I wonder if that is a dead weeping willow, I'm not too sure sorry. We have a greenhouse but we just grow tomatoes and cucumbers in it once a year , we don't use it to it's full potential. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you both ❤❤ xx

Kath what are you doing? Thats fantastic soil it came out from under your lawn, maybe one day when your lawn collapses you might need it to refill or top dress it or toss it under your trees. Make a vege patch out back, top up your planters, fill your pots in your greenhouse ready for seeds..real waste just tossing over the fence, soon it will bank up and the moles or rabbits/hares can jump the fence🤭🤭🤭🐇 or the cows will be able to step up and over🐂🐂🐄🤭🤭😊..I was reading up on moles as we dont have them here, they can dig 100 feet a day and you might only have 1 mole not lots but I also read that people poison them, how horrid but beware when you have dogs as the baits are very toxic..Im wondering if the previous owners might have left any around..might pay to check in your sheds etc..good luck..apparently you can trap and relocate them too, but Im sure you have read up onall of this too😊 happy new year...ah the joys of country living🤭🤗 thanks for a great video..loved it🙏

Thank you for the tip. I’ve had lots of people saying soil is good so I’m now saving it as top soil. The sonic things didn’t work. The moles just doing the highland fling all around them. 😂 I’m not into killing them so am resigned to just removing the hills until they naturally move on the better places. 🙏🤗❤️

@@MotorhomeMums ahhh it did say on Google that they didnt really work.. the trapping/relocating seemed to be the most logical...

Brilliant loved your video and I love the area so much and Motorhome life - I have an Autotrail Apache. There is a lovely walk from Boat of Garten over to Aviemore incase you don’t know it yet. Head along Kinchurdy Road and follow the signs.

Hi, lovely video I bet your garden will look great come summer. Interested to know how long your beautiful walk was? I meant to say on last video, I watched the BBC programme and had to laugh as I’ve never heard Sue speak so much, it was lovely to hear her. It would be great if you could entice her to do more talking when you’re together 🤞. Hopefully the moles will stay away ❤❤❤

😂😂😂I’m doing my best. Lovely comments like these help. The walk was 8.5 miles. Lovely walk and mostly fairly easy walking. Update on the moles… as soon as I turn my back the pop up again. I think they are having a little party. 🎉 🙏🤗❤️

Since i do not have a garden i cannot advice you, but if i were in your place with all the new things to discover i would look for tutorials on youtube. And there must be books on how to start gardening.
It was so nice to accompany you on your walk, i love the scenery. I'll be back for more!

@@MotorhomeMums Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and garden also taking us along on your hikes. There’s so many beautiful hardy perennial plants that you would only have to plant once and they would last for years, but I’d advise waiting until the spring that way you’ll see what has been planted by the previous owner and go from there, whatever you decide I’m sure your garden will be beautiful. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2025 ❤
