Great video, Will! Maybe also take a deeper dive into note lengths (like triplets), but also using velocity, anacrusis, swing (e.g. on hi hats), etc. Just like the chords, it brings tension and life to the music 🎼🎶
Thanks Will, I was reviewing a bunch of abandoned projects that were just 'OK' but boring. Stumbled across your vid and Bingo! I have new stuff to try that may make some of them more interesting.
Hey there! I'm so stoked I finally found what I've been looking for! This music theory video was super helpful in filling in the gaps in my knowledge. A huge shoutout to you for the Chord Bible and the fact that you teach in Ableton. You rock! Keep up the awesome work!
i've been watching a lot of music theory videos without understanding some basic concepts and this one finally explained that so easily, i would have improved so much quicker if i had watched it earlier im mad at myself. thank you for being really clear and thorough. im rather slow and not that music inclined but i want to make songs anyway, your videos are really helpful!
@@EDMTips anything about rhythm! mostly drums, as I find it really hard to make drum parts for my tracks, i'd appreciate more focused videos on that topic
This is a great explanation and visualization - it's gonna help me out for sure. Thanks for these vids! I just discovered your channel and dug a couple others today
Great vid as usual! HELL YEAH! - Had an idea for one that always gives me trouble, how to make an effective breakdown. They're either too empty, too clutter, or don't create enough tension to set up the drop properly. Love to see your take on it.
Hi Will, thanks for another great lesson in Music Theory. Just shared it with a Ukulele Group I play with. A basic knowledge on chord construction is a "must have" skill for any instrument, and this concise overview will be very useful 👍
Mario pui the vision uses the borrowed chords from parralle technique for the main melody and chords. The first chord and part of the melody borrows the F sharp which is what gives the tune its vibe (Track is A minor) Just thought it worth a mention as some of these tips work wonders in classic trance.
There are in fact three different minor scales. The minor scale in the video is natural minor. By sharpening the 6th it becomes harmonic minor, and by sharpening both the 6th and the 7th it becomes melodic minor. It seems that these alternative minor scales are in play from 13:55 onwards.
You're welcome, Jo, thanks for watching and supporting the channel! Anything else in particular you’re struggling with and would like me to cover on the channel?
Excuse me sir, if you are in A minor, 12:20 the notes F B C is a Fsus#4 (Fsus+) chord. 12:40 notes F G C is Fsus2 (or an inverted Csus4) Asus4 chord doesn’t have the note C. There are no major or minor suspended chords since they are lacking the third, that’s why are called suspended 4 or 2.
That's correct, but I didn't say the chord at 12:20 was Asus4 - just that I was changing that chord (which is F Major - F A C) to a Sus4 chord. Having just listen back though at 12:47, I understand the confusion: I said "Change it back to a Sus 4 chord (as in, from a non-sus chord to a sus chord), which sounds like I'm saying "ASus4"! My apologies for the lack of clarity
Great ! Very usefull. Additional tricks regarding how to compose a relevant bassline that doesn't follow the root notes of the chords, would be appreciate
Can someone explain the sharpened 7th? What will was playing was perhaps an octave too low to reflect what was happening on the piano roll. Great video btw
I still cannot begin how to understand Ableton (pesky Logic user right here), but your videos are really helpful for learning how to be better with my keyboard so thank you. You have such a sunny disposition and I am always cheered up by your videos as well as learning new things. Thank you!

Great video! Great ideas! I sometimes play around with 'borrowed' chords (inspiration from Billy Joel!) in my mixes. I thought that the Fsus4 chord was F, Bflat, C (12min44).
Hi Will your video's are great I love the practical approach to music theory. The scale function in Ableton makes it more playful and discoverable way to play with chords. Although the parallel key of A minor is C major like in the circle of 5ths. But thats a small detail because the borrowing from the a major scale works! :) Thanks for all the tips and tricks!

Wonder why it's less then 1000 👍 under this video? I understand it is general music basis rather then IDM though it's helpfull in the beginning of music creation journey.
The terminology is confusing for native English speakers too! If you're in A minor, then the *parallel* major key is A major (some different notes) but the *relative* major is C (same notes as A minor).

True, but technically the harmonic minor scale only sharpens the 6th on the way up, not on the way down.
