  • Ballet diva Natalia Makarova made her Broadway (and speaking) debut in the wonderful 1983 Broadway revival of "On Your Toes." Although she did not have any singing, she deservedly took the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical. In 1984, she repeated her triumph in London, where this sequence was filmed. Here is Makarova as ballet diva Vera Baranova in "The Seduction." Vera has just met music teacher Junior (Tim Flavin) and wastes no time getting acquainted.

I remember Natalia's full Tony winning speech clearly. It was one of the funniest speeches in Tony history. This show was marvelous-great performances by Natalia, Lara Teeter and especially the very wonderful Christine Andreas. Thanks once again, aurora spiderwoman for another sublime trip through memory lane.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed. I consider the '83 "On Your Toes" to be as good a revival as any Broadway has seen.

Here was another lost opportunity. WNET/13 tried several times to record this show for broadcast, but because of the unrealistic financial expectations on the part of the Kennedy Center, the author's and the theatrical producers, it never happened. No record of terrific performance by Makarov's or George de la Pena's and no good quality record of those great Balanchine choreographed dance numbers exist because of this. Greed gets everyone in the end.

That’s Tim Flavin whom I saw in the show in London.

Was she the first and only winner of best musical lead actress at the Tony without any singing at all?

Back in the '50s, well known actor Thomas Mitchell won a Tony for a non-singing role in Jule Styne's "Hazel Flagg." And it's interesting that 2018 Tony winner Tony Shalhoub only sings one song in "The Band's Visit," and it's in Arabic.

I can think of a few women who won the Tony for lead actress in a musical who didn't do what I would have called "singing." This year was a very close call but thank God that mistake didn't happen.

@@richardmayora6974 Pardon my ignorance, but would I be correct in assuming that Natalia Makarova’s strongest competitor in her category would have been Lonette McKee in “Show Boat”? I adore Natalia Makarova, and am relieved that so many Broadway audience members recognize her wit and intelligence. I do find it regrettable, though, that the timing of this revival of “On Your Toes” coincided with McKee’s first run as Julie. I’ve been awed by the snippets of her performance in the later Hal Prince production, for which she was not religionless for a nomination as a result having performed the role on Broadway already.
Incidentally, there is a small television special uploaded to UA-cam that has her performing with piano only, I think, and she didn’t display the beautiful phrasing and dynamics that I find to be so astonishing in Prince’s production a dozen years later. I wonder if she’d delivered this artistry in her earlier run if she might have beat Makarova.

Is this the 1983 revival? If so, why wasn't Lara Teeter playing Junior?

This is the 1984 London cast of the revival, with Markarova repeating her Broadway role, and Tim Flavin as Junior.

@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Oh, I see! I had no idea there was a London version of the revival.
