In the introduction to the documentary 'Philip: A Life in 12 Parts', Glass says of his music that you don't have to listen to it; there's lots of great music in the world, you don't have to listen to his, and I have always found that quote weirdly appropriate, in that his music works best when being heard but not listened to. I mean that in only the most complementary way (I am a fan, myself!) but when you first encounter his early, most "minimalist" works, if you try to listen to them, they quickly become frustratingly repetitive but once you switch off, and simply let your attention drift, you begin to actually hear the music; it's larger forms stretch and contract, the pulse shifts and breathes, creating an almost imperceptible tension and release which affects you more on a visceral level rather than a conscious one. His later works, which you can listen to in the conventional sense, still retain that deeper level of rhythmic structure that works on an unconscious level and makes them perfect for accompanying other forms of stimulus (which is perhaps why most of his work has been involved in collaboration with other arts, like dance, film and theatre, and of course opera; where the music can exist and operate semi-subconsciously, while the conscious mind is attending to whatever it is accompanying).

I only truly discovered Philip Glass’ music a few months ago, and it was just what I needed. Perfect for concentration, but also captivating.

Philip Glass really straddles both pop and classical genres like no one else that I can think of.
I can't use his music for anything else than listening to it. For any kind of other work (like paying bills), I need something I won't pay attention to, like ambient nature sounds, or FSTV in the background (no offense meant, guys).
