Thank you. I just bought the 5 Series Pit Boss. First time ever using a smoker. Your videos are very informative. I followed your tips on my first use and the pork butt turned out fantastic.
Good video. When I started pellet smoking a few years ago, i always used Bbqers Delight pellets. They give a great flavor, but for some reason, render more inconsistent temps. Started using Traeger pellets which were much more consistent as far as temperature, but gave much less smoke flavor. I was pretty hesitant about running Pit Boss Pellet, but I'm glad I did because I get pretty great results. Glad you touched on sifting, because it's very important, especially when you get toward the bottom of the bag.
Mike, a PB Classic at Wally for $397 and a PB series 3, like yours, at Menards for $347 combined comes to $744. The KC and the Lockhart are $797. The two would take up less space on my 8x10 patio. Just thinking. All I know is that series 5/Copperhead takes up a lot of space. Great machine but too big for this old single guy. Supposed to be 40+ tomorrow and Sunday. Thinking about a pot roast in the smoker.
Weekend Warrior BBQ I am seriously considering the 3 for when I want to do some larger cooks or longer ones and the Classic for an everyday cooker. March will be my month unless I jump earlier. I really do want to see the new ones. Be neat if PB put that controller on the 3 and the Classic

Once you get one you'll never go back. My Weber sits neglected and I gave my gasser away. Pellet grills are very versatile and I do it all from bbqing to heating up frozen pizza and baking. Only recommendation I have is if you are interested in baking like doing How to bbq right's white chocolate chip bourbon bread pudding is make sure the pellet grill you get has a PID controller for accurate temp control. Weekend warrior bbq is one of the best channels for this so you found the right one.
No mesquite Buckeye? I’ve used their apple, fruitwood and competition blend. I see Cusinart has rum cherry and bourbon maple. I have yet to get you in my phone so I can get in touch with you just in case I decide to head to see my sis this summer. We deplorables here in flyover country still haven’t got the two new Pit Boss grill/smokers in to take a look at. This was a good instructional video. Particularly about the blending.

Had to put in an order for a couple of bags of the whiskey barrel pellets after watching this, they sound amazing. I'm back and forth on getting the Pitboss KC Combo or waiting until the Weber pellet smoker comes out later this month. Would love to see you test that one.

Another great and informative video Mike. I bought both competition and charcoal with my smoker at Lowe's. Having an Ace Hardware about 3 miles away I use their Traeger pellets as well, about 8 different varieties including pecan and alder.

So my Son and I both shot an Elk here in Colorado this year...I watched this video not knowing Walmart had pellet.... I went and got some flavors that I didn’t have....So after trying them all... I gotta say... you missed the best flavor for wild game...Pecan!!...brother you gotta try pecan cherry and post oak on an elk tenderloin...best ever...thanks again.

That’s not a bad idea. I think in most cases though you would use up the pellets before they absorbed the moisture... assuming you keep a lid on the bucket

Hey! We run the same smoker, and was wondering if you had any suggestions for low smoke output. I keep a clean rig but for some reason only mesquite gets the right amount, and hickory a close second. Any competition or blend I run just burns clean. help would be appreciated! online help with our smoker is weak

Thanks Brent. I bought it on amazon and I love it BUT... the sun glare off of the top is absolutely brutal on the 👀. Sunglasses are a must if you dint have a shaded area to put it in 😎

The Cabelas pellets also has WAY bigger temp swings. No matter what pellets, better than gas. Dump a bag in and get some meat on!
I have smoked on the weber kettle and love the cherry and beef combo... but now with a pellet I'm worried, that combo only worked because of charcoal... does the charcoal blend really give the charcoal flavor? Do you feel like your bbqing with kingsford or royal oak?

Hi, James. I just keep them in the buckets. I go through them pretty quick so if you need to long term store them... I would just take the unopened bag or bucket in the house where it isnt going to go through the temperature fluctuations

Hickory blend from anyone... Weber, Pit Boss, whatever your local store has available. There is no need to mix the pellets for a pizza oven. You will be burning them too hot to tell much of a difference in flavor.
I have a pitboss smoker and use their pellets too but even at 225 they occasionally burst into flames and trigger the temp sensor to shut off due to overheating. Any ideas? maybe some foil in the bottom of the pellet tray?

Hi, Shawn. I like to mix the charcoal with the fruit-wood blend in a 50/50 ratio. The cherry that is in the fruit wood combined with the charcoal gives you an excellent smoke ring and flavor.
i used pitboss Lumberjack and BBQers delight. like them all. PB is cheaper in cost, put out good flavor. IMO i liked lumberjack better. BBQers have more selection. matter of taste of course
I was hoping you were gonna make a video about pellets. Love this kind of stuff! Unfortunately I never get any smoke flavor when using Pit Boss pellets and I've tried most of them (charcoal, hickory, competition, etc) and always get the same results. Almost like an odd ashy flavor. I've heard pit boss pellets are made with different ratios of oak to flavor wood depending on your location so maybe that has something to do with it?

Only without the sometimes harsh taste of charcoal. I've got a Rural King about two hours away that sells 20lb bags of Lumberjack pellets for less than $9.00. Can't wait to head back and stock up. Keep doing what you're doing brother. Always appreciate it!
If you have academy sports in your area see if they have the Jack Daniels pellets. They are made with Jack Daniels barrel charcoal and oak. They are my favorite pellet of all. Great charcoal flavor. $14.99 for 20lb bag.
Watched a blind taste test of pit boss vs traeger vs kingsford vs weber vs bear mountain vs green mountain and they rated pit boss and traeger the lowest for smoky flavor and 4 back to back tests with 2 people and commented that pit boss and traeger have a “chemically” smell before even lighting the grill up. Please do a blind taste test pitting different brands against each other!
The main difference between pellets are the brand you use more than the flavor you use. Just saying from someone that has used a pellet grill for a few years.
I have owned a Traeger Timberline for 2 years. The smoker works great re temp control, etc BUT I find the flavor it imparts on the meat to be pretty vile. It tastes NOTHING like real good bbq. I seem to be the only person on the internet who feels this way. The only pellets I have tried are the Traeger brand. Before giving up entirely and selling the grill, I am wondering if different brands of pellets would really make much of a difference at all. Thoughts??
If I want to do a blend I just make up my own blend and with a little experimentation you can get super results ! Just remember to write down your formula ratio on your container .😃
Weekend Warrior BBQ It’s all in the correctness of the sentence... “100% pure wood” which is true, but they don’t say what the blend or mix is. Sad to say you just DON’T really know what you’re getting.
Pit boss pellets are disappointing at best..lots of ash, not much smoke flavor in the meat..I think they are like 70% filler and 30% flavor woods..in other words they kinda suck

I just used the fruit blend on my ribs on last weekend and turned out awesome

I've eaten smoked meats from a vertical charcoal water smoker and pellet smoker. The charcoal wins every single time. The flavor is much better.

Jay Steel try a 50-50 mix of pecan and hickory for pork. It’s the perfect blend for ribs and butt IMHO.

Would it help to put a desiccate into a bucket to keep the pellets dry? Those little white things that soak up moisture.

so when the bag says "real wood flavor" Dose that mean its not 100% real wood? Are there additives that go in to give the pellets the flavor?
I don’t know the answer to that question but I do know that at least one of the pellet manufacturers is in the process of being sued over this.

No it’s not the same as Weber charcoal but it’s enough of a charcoal flavor that I can taste and smell it. It’s really a good compromise in my opinion

I have a pellet pizza oven as well and I like the hickory blend. It burns hotter than the fruit wood blends.

I mixed 50% Competition, 25% Fruit, and 25% Charcoal. Pork and chicken have all tasted soooo good! Can’t wait to try those Whiskey Barrel ones

Yes you can. I have used multiple different brands without any issues

I have owned a Traeger Timberline for 2 years. The smoker works great re temp control, etc BUT I find the flavor it imparts on the meat to be pretty vile. It tastes NOTHING like real good bbq. I seem to be the only person on the internet who feels this way. The only pellets I have tried are the Traeger brand. Before giving up entirely and selling the grill, I am wondering if different brands of pellets would really make much of a difference at all. Thoughts??
I think Lumberjack brand pellets are the best. It does make a difference but it’s still not going to come close to an offset stick burner.

What happens if you eat a pellet?
I prefer 100% species wood pellets. It gives the best flavor for your wood
What’s the downside of leaving the little pieces in?
The little pieces tend to be the ones that collect moisture and get stuck at the bottom of the auger tube. Over time they may jamb the auger.
Why do you sift it?
Mix equal parts of all pellets togrether and see what happens.

I think Blend is a word they can use and dont really know for sure what the percentage is!!!! They sure don't put it on their bags!!!
If I want to do a blend I just make up my own blend and with a little experimentation you can get super results ! Just remember to write down your formula ratio on your container .😃

Problem with pellets is that you can’t simply get 100% pure hickory, or apple, or cherry, or Mesquite, or oak, or peach, or lychee wood.
I think Lumberjack has a pure hickory but you are right... it’s hard to find a pure wood type pellet
Weekend Warrior BBQ It’s all in the correctness of the sentence... “100% pure wood” which is true, but they don’t say what the blend or mix is. Sad to say you just DON’T really know what you’re getting.

Unfortunately, charcoal blend is a Wal-mart exclusive.
You can check out Jack Daniels, CampChef, or Lumberjack. They all have a charcoal mix

These pellets are all expensive. You have to really like smoked meat to continue in this hobby
If you think your food will have the charcoal flavor that traditionally comes with lump coal your wrong . Not much flavor
Pit boss pellets are disappointing at best..lots of ash, not much smoke flavor in the meat..I think they are like 70% filler and 30% flavor woods..in other words they kinda suck
pitt boss pellets are the worst, buy some quality pellets.
