AoE2: DE Campaigns | El Cid | 5. King of Valencia

- From heart attacks to Villager rushes!
In this scenario, El Cid carves out a kingdom of his own in Valencia. But to do so, he must defend the city against Count Berenguer's siege while the local villagers construct a wonder. Just spam defenses and hold on as best you can!

LOL, it seems there's something about AoE AI that'll never change.
😂😂😂
bro, those villagers were just a chill community of lumberjacks XD
After 4 easy El Cid missions this is scary one... too unbalanced tbh.
Yeah, this campaign is not very balanced
I'd say the trick is to not fall into the trap of using static defense.
I had a not too difficult time on hard.
You just need to nonstop pump fishing boats. There are so many fish available.
For military, I went knights with a few conquistadors, plus one monk to top off my knights between fights + to steal away enemy knights as they rode past my walls.
The first couple waves you want to let them break in so that their cavalry fights within castle range.
Definitely the hardest mission in the El Cid campaign though, much trickier than the last one.
How are you supposed to pump fishing boats when your wood income gets shut down so quickly?
@@TheAbyssofFire I found deleting the sea wall to chop down the reeds growing along the shore gave enough safe wood to get fishing ships out, then used a food/gold eco for everything. That was at the moderate difficulty though, not hard, so idk if that’s still a possibility
As someone living in Valencia I like how is depicted. (and yes, there are still lots and lots of oranges now)
Hardest El Cid mission, by far, though Reconquista is solid and my personal favorite from El Cid. The first 20 minutes of this mission are insane. I've been pushed to the point on more than a few occasions where I have had to run El Cid around to lure the enemy fire while the wonder slowly goes up.
I was able to defend Denia, train a few missionaries, plus the two free ones and grab the camels. Use El CID to snipe the seige and have the cav chase him. Convert and pick off the cav👍
Exactly, mass missionaries with techs and try to get to Imp to get the even juicier Imp upgrades. After that just convert the paladins and wipe the floor with the Franks as you'll be using Frank Paladins vs Champions and Archers. I made about 5 missionaries and just sat behind wall and converted their knights, the AI won't attack the wonder if it can attack you and the game gets extremely easy. I didn't bother with fishing as this map already requires quite a bit of macro with El Cid and managing the missionaries.
Before reaching Dania, You can use your hero to lure and take out the northern forces unit by unit. Takes quite a while but it worked. The Wonder event will not be triggered. Then the whole Purple force will stop booming. The rest under your mercy.
Or you can wall their gate with the farming vils at Denia, then they stuck and the rest is what you wrote
*Hot tip:* As soon as El Cid enters his village, send your four villagers to block up Berenguer's gate. Two wall blocks are all you need, but you need to act fast. When you've done this, Berenguer's troops will stay put. Yes, this will mean that Denia's gate remains locked, apparently trapping you in for good. But hey, no problem! Just temporarily change Denia from Ally to Neutral or Enemy, and you can then destroy its gate (or even more easily its wall). After that, you're at leisure to build up your forces and destroy Berenguer without any opposition. Obviously, this is not how the gameplay was envisaged by its creators!
i did it and it works!!!
If you wall off the initial army before crossing the bridge it makes the campaigns significantly easier
Most of us players just trying to survive the level, and this guy goes on the attack against purple.
In this mission, offensive is the best defense. Especially against the Purple (Count Berenguer)
Even after 4 years its still an awesome scenario and cid was given the power of people's love.
I have no idea how you withstood that! That kind of pressure would have been a bit much for me 😅
This ! But towers are the answer... and sick microing and macroing...
Thank you for the playthrough!
Poor Cid keeps getting exiled like a boy who gets friendzoned
Well, there is a dirty trick you can use. First, send three of the four villagers to the left corner where the Cid appears and you'll have a good amount of wood, but you need to wait until you get to the city to build the woodcamp.
Then, you can block the gate by destroying it and then building walls, you can do that if you change Dania to enemy or neutral. Doing that, enemies won't attack you.
33:12 I think they meant the baleares not africa.
Good one. I don't think I've ever finished this one. I tend to play for relaxation.
play them on events with cheats enabled :D relaxation becomes enjoyable
I cheesed the beggining by turning my initial units to passive and block the gate at the north of the new city. It was so dope I couldn't believe how much time I saved plus all the food!
I take out the treb, rams and knights straight away at the start. He doesn't attack for a while after that. He knows better than Fuck with El Cid!
OH.MY.GAWD! I've only been playing this game for less than a week and this is what they throw at us!?!??! You were jumping around the map and most of the time I couldn't even see what you were doing. I guess I'll have to watch again in slo-mo! LOL
Dude, I can see that I need to learn my hotkeys! But you also didn't help us out by telling us things like: How many villagers are you creating each time & where you are sending them, likewise for your combat units (I can now see that you never bothered with infantry and stayed with horseback).
And was this on standard or difficult?
Anyway, thanks for the video! Cheers
1. You can see at the start when he selects it, its on hard.
2. His mechanical skill is very low, poor micro and doesnt do things very quickly at all.
3. You should go to the options and map your hotkeys. Select all town centers and each military building is pretty important, and select idle villagers/all idle vills, all Idle military are also big. As far as the hotkeys you can visually pick them up because its a grid from left to right its qwert, asdf, zxcv so like a monastery would be q d while an archery range would be w w. It does take time though, just work on it.
4. Always, always, always keep pumping villagers at all times, all scenarios until you're at about 60% of your population cap. You can "muscle" through most scenarios with good eco.
5. You can see who goes where at the top, there's a number below each resource counter. That's the amount of villagers. Generally they go where the TC that spawned them was.
6. Check out Hera Age of Empires on youtube or twitch. He's got the videos to give you the skills.
7. If you have an ally or available market dont be dumb like this guy. Make trade carts. Move your market as far away as is safe to increase their efficiency.
8. Check out Spirit of the Law for AOE2 math. Very popular.
@@jonathanbrowning4 thank you for the reply, it was very informative. I’ve been watching Hera on Twitch often but I didn’t know about his UA-cam channel so, again, thanks.
You're certainly welcome im glad to help anyone new to the game. And spirit of the law is on youtube too, him and Hera are friends so he's trustworthy too.
Oh the "go to last alarm" hotkey is also part of the way to move so fast. That and setting groups using ctrl+1-9
In the first town research Pikeman upgrade and train 2 missionaries. Then once the vills talk about retreating, go and fetch the other 2 missionaries. The 4 missionaries, if micro'd correctly and with luck, converts 4 of the initial knights, plus the knights and camels you picked up can easily overwhelm them. This will eliminate the first army. (It will show up later at a worst timing if we don't finish them off first).
At Valencia drop 2 more TCs as soon as you can and train vills round the clock, don't let the loose enemy units distract you, and just focus on booming, blocking off the bridge to Denia will ensure the south is safe. Build trade carts with allies. Get to Imp and do all the upgrades before the Wonder is close to finish and cap out population. This works at least for Moderate. Not gonna try Hard. ;)
Got my cheeks served to me on a silver plate. Left El Cid five seconds unnatended to deal with the northern invasion. When i notice, his corpse is right on the side of a bombard tower
I needed this
In the end I let everything be destroyed with El Cid in a transport ship so he was safe, they just ignored the wonder and it finished and I won! I let it continue out of curiosity as they weren't going for wonder when I was being slammed and I was too frustrated to keep restarting! I might revisit it and try to win by not just laying down and being steamrolled.
DOES NOT WORK
@@allentoyokawa9068 must've been a bug that worked just for me
Just played it the other day. Ran in with some cav to kill their siege when they were busy in Denia and the scenario became quit easy after massing some conquistadores and camping on a hill :D
“it’s a lumberjacking community” lmaoooo
the villager building the wonder stopped constructing the wonder how do i get them to continue building?
My go to Spanish army comp. Halbs, conqs, and bbc. Then in this mission I convert enemy troops to round out my forces since they love just running right next to the walls. Works everytime
33:50 Player 6 might be the troop that attacked Denia.
"They got rid of Africa" - Ornlu, 2020
old voiceline so much better smh
based Ornlu
So.....i actually DEFEATED the invader army and the gate in the bottom right wont unlock
For anyone who has this problem in the future: (make sure you move your army far away from green) or change (attack) "stance" to "no attack" change diplomacy with green to neutral and destroy this gate only. If you cant change diplomacy, then use mangonels/onagers and attack ground at the portcullis section of the gate. Same solution if you blocked off purple's gate, converted his whole army or wiped them out.
This mission is super easy. After they open that gate for you to flee, run out and but wall up the bridge before you go to the new town. Stops the entire army and makes it incredibly easy.
you can defend Denia and defeat Berenguer's attacking forces, but there's no real point
With good managing of troops and resources, it is possible to destroy berenguer base.
At my peak AOE2 time, I managed to do it
I wastch these videos and find that the've become a bit harder in the current version. Like for this scenario, Berenger has an endless supply of Trebuchets constantly with knights, archers, Swordsmen, cannoneers, etc
This mission is so impossible. You start out with a useless army with no upgrades and a shitty town and within 2 minutes hordes of paladins, champions, rams, onagers and trebs are on your ass. This is the only mission I could not win.
once you understand what the enemy do its not bad really. they have one wave that is hard rest is fine. u can basicly solo with el cid after that bombard wave.
@@Anttown123 but but but the bombard wave.... it is too scary. It is not only bombard, it is mix of paladin, champion, some archer( still annoy), priest, ram. And we have lack of everything..
@@nguyenhuyduc9151 ye i had to replay it one or two times. Before complete. Have u tried mimic his video? If you cant figure out your own gameplan,
@@Anttown123 yeah. My bad. I play as fast speed+ low finger so i cant convert enough knight. Just use 1 or 2 knight to lure the siege and the first horde of purple( 10 knights+ sieges) can kill without any loss! Maybe the hard AI was confused about it and rarely atk me till the wonder complete. THe bombard wave is not strong as the first time i play. They focus to atk my first castle, but that castle was aster an other castle, free hit..
@@nguyenhuyduc9151 nice man 👍
I am kind of new is the game, I played few games many years ago but never got into it much. Now I am trying to play in hard and it is almost impossible, I have done two missions in one week! However, after seeing you playing, it looks so easy and boring that actually I don't think I would bother anymore haha. I actually was enjoyed trying to built my own castle and a huge army... but it seems the game is just about attacking fast and making repetitive mechanic decisions …. thank you :(
There should be an Achievement to save Denia because it’s actually super easy. and if you do save Denia you get 5/10 minutes of free boom
Edit: to be more accurate you dodge the first major attack and you get the whole east side of the map to freely boom in.
How do you save Denia?
you make 4 monks and stone wall the gaps in the city. Convert the knights to attack the trebs. Then with your next wave of converted knights use them to snipe the onagers and rams. Convert any left over knights and you saved Denia
Don't think you can boom without wood before getting to Valencia, but at least you get to remove the frustrating wave of knights and siege assaulting you from the back.
There's an even easier way. Have el cid attack berenguers walls. The onagers will start attacking and the knights will charge you. Just make a big loop until the onagers kill all the knights. Then run to the city and have your swordsman attack the onagers while you attack with el cid
@@kingsarues1586 Smart !
Only 2 enemy factions with 1 that has a score of a one man army, how bad can it be...
And that's how wrong I am...
It's not just siege weapons, they're backed against bombard tower that will one shot almost everything that goes in for melee, and you're not given the time to get alternative counter up.
if you wish to know which is player 6, change to neutral and toggle friends/foes color
Maybe there were two Berenguers, so that the one on the north would get more pop space to harass you at the beginning.
I hate how El CId is 1 sword in the DE, yet this mission ALONE is harder than ANY Le Loi campaign (or quite a few other campaigns) that have 3 swords difficulty.
i played this in hard mode and dang they have a lot of trebuchet T_T
how do you jump between TCs?
By pressing 'H'.
mapping "select all TC's" in the options is an even better idea.
