    I recycle my Walmart marinara sauce jars for pantry storage. They are free after you use the sauce. The label and sticky comes off with goo be gone. The lids don’t hold a smell and have a rubber seal. I use them to store rice, beans, lentils, bulk oats, sugar, dehydrated powders and fruit. If you add an oxygen absorber the bubble will pop down and seal. I like to use them to store this things for my rotational pantry to keep from getting into the buckets. Also with the jar shortage it’s more economical. I also save them to make gifts of meals in a jar or to preassemble my own brownie mix. Love them. They are uniform and look totally awesome in the pantry.
    I also use for my dry soup mixes. I recently found an instapot pumpkin pie spice oatmeal you assemble in a jar and then just dump with water into instapot for three minutes. It uses dehydrated pumpkin powder which I learned how to make this week. Great way to preserve pumpkins on the homestead. You can use in baking, smoothies, etc.

    It's always interesting to see how other people do their pantries, and what they have in it. You've got some surprises in there, like the Coconut Milk, but as you say, you use two cans at a time. If your family won't eat it, don't store it.
    It is strange to see things like Apple Sauce, Grits and Iced Tea, as we don't have them in the UK, but ideas like your Minestrone Mix jars are genius. Going to find the video showing how you make it. Thanks again for sharing 👍

    Homemade salsa: chili de arbol chilis (about 7-8 dried); 4 sweet chilis (corno di toro or banana type, or even roasted poblano/dried anchos are good); garlic cloves; red onion; 1 cup diced tomatoes (San Marzano or Roma); 1 tsp. each of salt, pepper and brown sugar; 1 tblsp. cumin; cilantro (a rough handful of leaves); 1-2 limes, squeezed for juice.
    In blender, combine sweet chilis, garlic and onion. Don't blend yet!
    Simmer chili de arbols in water until soft. In separate pan, heat tomatoes gently. Drain arbols and stir into tomatoes. Add seasonings and simmer gently. When soft, add to stuff in blender, and mix on high until smooth. Add chopped cilantro and lime juice, and blend until smooth.
    If you prefer the salsa more chunky, simply don't blend as long.

    Heads up from someone who works in the distribution side of a large supermarket chain (me) What we experienced in 2020 was only the dress rehearsal. Last year the manufacturers couldn't make couldn't make their products is their products fast enough and couldn't truck them out fast enough 2 to meet demand but now there aren'there are no supplies so the manufacturers can't make the products the products and there are no truckers To Transport to the distribution centers Where there is is not enough staff To process And send things out to the stores. If last year's shortages were temporary But what we are starting to See now is is going it's going to last for God only knows how long. Everyone needs to prioritize, Make lists, And if you see it then grab it. The major retailers are already already behind the scenes now now Quietly planning landing for the worst. They are terrified of Another panic buying situation situation which is expected in another week maybe 2 at the latest.

    • @Pursuit.of.Simplicity
      @Pursuit.of.Simplicity  2 роки тому

      I’ve heard those same things from friends and family in many different industries, not just food. I feel like it’s just a matter of time before the ball drops. I’m surprised retailers haven’t already re-instated limits; especially places like Sam’s and Costco.

    Please don’t stack your home canned items on top of each other. It can create a false seal so you might not know if a jar goes bad. I used to stack mine too but then I had the top flat of one pop the lids. As soon as that box was off the top the bottom jar popped their lids. It only happened once but I shudder thinking if we had eaten those

    • @Pursuit.of.Simplicity
      @Pursuit.of.Simplicity  3 роки тому +3

      Thank you for sharing that. There are differing opinions on this. I have always read that it’s safe to stack them as long as there’s cardboard in between. I also wait 48 hours after canning to double check the seal and then store them without the rings.

    I doctor up Ramen for many soups, and a favorite Ramen salad. Also my favorite way to change a store bought salsa is to add fresh pico de gallo to it. I only buy mild since I can season it to my family’s taste. Are you able to link the soup mix recipe or that You tuber since my daughter is a vegetarian and a very busy young adult who enjoys cooking a lot and is very frugal so if I make these up for her she could make a quick veggie soup/stew in her small Instapot when she has exams in the cooler months. Thanks in advance. Also if you have not tried it try making your own almond and oat milk. Also Im from India I prefer coconut cream to make my family’s curry recipes. Curry is a sauce not a mix of “curry” powder and coconut milk. I keep all my nuts and flours in a separate small freezer. I was able to gift several people flour last year with homemade naan, no knead bread and quiche shells and pizza crust because my own family is very small. I was glad I always keep a supply in my small chest freezer. I work a lot of hours outside the home so my pantry and freezer is absolutely necessary since I shop only 4-5 times a year for non perishables, meat and frozen veggies. I shop every 2 weeks for fresh fruits fresh veggies eggs and a creamer I enjoy. TFS your pantry. I have a very small home so I have used armoires as my pantry storage. They are very handy and if you search well you can find nice ones for not much money that can be in any room storing your extra food and or cleaning supplies.

      It was pretty crazy! I didn’t see toilet paper in a store from March until the end of May. There were plenty of places getting small shipments, but by the time I’d hear about it and make it to the store, they’d be sold out again. I’ll never forget that feeling when I waited in line outside of Sam’s Club for an hour before they opened and their entire toilet paper aisle was fully stocked when they opened. I may have had tears in my eyes.😆
